Has anyone experienced negative effects yet using the "empty AssetRegistry.bin workaround" to force-enable DLC based mods loading on TSW4?

Depending on how long it will take till TSW4 has full mod support, I'm thinking of releasing my mods using that method as a temporary solution for TSW4.

I'm just testing my LFR mod using that trick, seems to work in TSW4.

I haven’t bothered trying it, mainly because Matt has suggested not to. It isn’t consistent and doesn’t work all the time, I do know that.

All of it suggests that whatever it is that is stopping mods working is more complex than is ideal.

Yes. The most annoying thing is aside from the mod issue, that the loading times have noticeably increased. Booting up takes ages, and when I exit a service and go to Main Menu, it takes around ten seconds - on TSW3 that happens instantly. (Especially annoying when testing mods and having to restart often.)

I'm currently testing that method and it seems to work for the modded RVVs, better than nothing. Haven't noticed anything unusual and uploaded AVL Rotem fix with a disclaimer.

I wish they'd remove that addon manager code or whatever it is. Really a step back at the moment. And will keep people using mods from buying TSW4...

    agree loading time are annoying
they just need to improve those loading times
i am already using a few updated/new mods that work fine with it
such as godmode and Improved signal visuals

These do work as they are not DLC specific mods (like rolling stock enhancements) which conflict with the AddonManager (do we need this on PC?) - those are not supported atm.

I was surprised by the title "Modding Question - Tsw4 Hack?", I thought it was some hack, but it's just about modifying the *.pak, which is very easy to do and eliminating AssetRegistry.bin causes the cache to be lost at startup, even causing bugs, If it wasn't something important it wouldn't be present in all the DLC's.

"Hack" because it's the only way to currently use DLC based mods in TSW4 and it's not recommended by DTG, though I haven't run into issues so far and as long as it works I'm ok with it, if not I'll just remove the pak. The Rotem cab mod works fine (and is essential for enjoying driving that thing for me).

I don't intend to upload more TSW4 stuff atm, DTG are the ones to act. Community is waiting ;)

Might cause issues elsewhere but I've not come across issues with RVV files yet, adding a zerobyte AssetRegistry.bin to the mod files.

The day DTG wants to kill all Mods definitively they will do so, as a first protection they can add the encryption key to the *.pak, even then it is weak; as a second protection they can add a table of all DLC's with the hash's of each one and only these *.pak will be read by the game's executable, all other *.pak will be aborted when reading.

Therefore, the term “hacking” will be considered, as we will then need to break these protections.

Removing AssetRegistry.bin or modifying it incorrectly can cause several bugs, especially in a locomotive DLC, as sometimes it can no longer be modified in the Livery Designer because it ends up disappearing, it can also disappear in the choice menu, like other things that don't I remember more, I've been through it myself.

As there's no alternative, you have to prioritize: Is the simulation experience important to me and I need modifications to achieve that because the game behaves in a way I do not like, or do I need all functions the game offers? For me it's clear - Livery Designer is not interesting to me, and I've never used it. Licensing issues, stuff withdrawn, clunky way of actually creating a texture, but for consoles it's the only way.

I actually found missing services when NOT clearing the DLC's AssetRegistry.bin - using it actually restores them, so for my own private use, I'm fine using it and will apply it to other's TSW3 mods if I want them to work on TSW4 as long as the issue stands.

What DTG decide to do is not in my hands (I can only buy or not buy, binary choice here) and I am only ever working with what I've got. I know encryption can be surpassed (I've coded my own tools on the Amiga for ripping game content either from memory or from disk 30+ years ago), and imho it has to be cracked if a company sells products that do not work - not talking about glitches, every game has them more or less, but game breaking bugs that are not being addressed quickly. There's good examples in the industry and there's bad.

My decision making is : Buy if you can mod it OR if the developer's reputation is such I can be sure he delivers quality - or leave it.

I wouldn't have 7000 hours on TSC if it was not moddable. Latest release, Zenghxi highspeed: cabview so low you don't see anything ahead :). Fixed in a minute, no worries for me. I know what to expect.

wellington I agree the term "hack" doesn't really apply. Consider that having been "clickbait" :D.

Threads climb down the ladder in here pretty quick (I preferred the old forum structure where consoles had their own subforums) because of the flood of posts in here. The forums are an absolute mess, for users and devs. People now need to make decisions where to exactly post their issue in the mass of subforums, in the end it all goes into the main forum. Rants, technical discussions, gameplay discussion, simple yes/no questions, no proper tagging if issues have been solved - does anybody have an oversight what bugs have been already reported? No.

Thanks for input. Still new to UE and eager to explore.

Mod active. Check: Rotem timetables OK, Livery Designer: OK
