can someone explain why the cam goes wild when entering a tunnel? is it a new "protection from colliding stuff" but backfired badly?

(view with 60 fps to see what's actually happening, epilepsy warning! (fast frame changing))

This the NUMBER ONE ISSUE i've had ever since tsw2!!

i drive almost exclusively (99%+ of the time) using the external camera set up at the front of the train to provide a 'front nose' view looking ahead at the track and surrounding scenery from the front of the train.

some routes are worse than others, but a lot of them have tunnels or bridges that once you enter/pass under them, the camera jumps uncontrollably and needs to be reset.

there's at least 3 locations this occurs between London St Pancras and Ashford

there's 2 locations close together south of Hassocks on Brighton Main Line

there's 5 locations on the new ECML (both tunnels north and south of Grantham, one bridge between Grantham and Newark and two bridges near Tuxford (between Newark and Retford)

i find it disproportionately frustrating because of the way i play the game.. i play constantly with a front facing external camera because i like to see the full screen of scenery, and none of the cab, regardless of that train i'm driving.

and before anyone says "it's only a tunnel, why do you want to see inside a tunnel" that's completely missing the point.. i want to have a camera set up in one position from start to finish of an entire run, and not have to manually reset it everytime it fails inside certain tunnels and under certain bridges.

i'd LOVE a fix for this so much. There is a way around this where if you know a route well enough so you know exactly where these specific camera issues occur, you can enter cab view, wait until you pass the faulty area, then re-enter external camera (that way it remembers where you set the camera and goes back to the same position as before) but that's not ideal

what would be ideal is a fix so the external camera stays in position, regardless if it's inside a tunnel or under a bridge

edit: to make my own camera preferences clear.. this is how i set up my camera for every single run on every single route.. forward facing, external, central on the track from the front of the train:

    IMG_5378.jpeg IMG_5379.jpeg

Enter certain tunnels and pass under certain bridges with this camera angle.. and i have the exact same issue of the camera 'bouncing around' uncontrollably

This annoys the snot out of me. I often use the exterior camera at the nose of the loco instead of sitting in the cab. I get to see more of the scenery this way and some trains have very small windows. I'd like to see the external camera get a god mode where it can go through objects freely. I promise not to abuse it by looking in passenger heads too much.

Then you would need to ask F-Block for that feature

Same thing on the new routes tsw4. Disgusting dtg why do you not known about this. Or you do but I doesn't matter. Do you not play this stuff before releasing. Don't get me started on the stuttering.

Yeah nice but in the end that's not the way how the game supposed to be! The game is... You're the train driver.... Not trainsurfer..... There way more things thats need more priority i guess.....

I do not agree. The option to use this camera is available in the game and should function correctly. For me, it is the only way to have fun driving the British EMU. And I use it a lot while driving other locomotives.

It works for normal use.... Not for use like a static camera at the front on the train. Its meaning for some nice views outside the train and that works great! And in tunnels its blocked that is someting that is a minor issue and have no priorty at all to fix soon

Well, for me and apparently other players also, it is not a minor issue.

    Seriously?!

Like others on here I also find it really irritating - I find a nice external camera position early during a run and then I need to do it all over again if I don't switch back in to the cab fast enough when I enter a bridge or a tunnel.

I can only assume that the DTG team don't use the external camera or else they would have fixed this years ago....

Yeah drama all over the place.... 99% of the routes has no more than 3 tunnels so what's your point?! The only route that have this issue is KWG!

99% of routes? How does that work when we don’t even have a hundred routes yet? Plus there are lots of routes that do have more than three tunnels. There is even one route that has as many tunnels as KWG. It isn’t only tunnels that affect the camera either, it is bridges too, and in many cases just a random invisible wall somewhere across the track.

External cameras and how routes affect them need much work in TSW, and that even goes as far as the speed of panning them on console controllers as well, which changes with each new TSW that comes out. There is plenty to talk about. Having a forward facing external fixed camera should be a standard feature in TSW but so far all calls for it are just ignored. It would be no more difficult to add than a head-out camera in the internal camera options and those are on every train, even ones where the windows don’t open.

Don't be so silly you verywell understand what i'm talking about.... And i have search on wikipedia and KGW has more than 35 tunnels so there is no route that have that amount.... And okay maybe there are routes with 5 tunnels but that not in near equal with the problem for the camera.
And its not written in the settings as driverscamera and thats what i mean... Its nice to use as a external look around youre train but you can not ask to DTG to fix this issue to set all the assets so that a very small amount of users that using as a second driversview.... All the objects you see uses the same boundingbox for the player walking around as the camera is blocking so if you come near to OHE equipment or stationsstuff for exemple it will bounce the camera to an other view.... You can say thats not so nice but that is correct manner of the game.
For tunnels thats a bug but its not nice to say but has zero priority i guess... There so many more gamebranking problems that has higher priority to fix at the moment. I do not say it will never happen.

Is that a baseless statement or do you work for DTG and/or can provide some evidence where DTG has said that?

Alright, so It's baseless nonsense you can't back up with anything factual let alone a statement from DTG, gotcha.

It would just need an "External Camera Clipping ON|OFF" setting in the menu.

I tried to enter "IDSPISPOPD" but it didn't work ;)

Wait I just remember, on Vorarlberg when I entered a tunnel, the outside cam just went back to driver's POV and I could not use the outside cams until the train was out of the tunnel again. maybe it really is a tunnel protection mechanism which, as said above, backfired badly, for older routes especially.

Not just tunnels - bridges or any trackside structures also cause the camera to go haywire when they ‘hit’, and it happens on all routes.

We all have our preferences when it comes to the game. I play with the external camera placed continuously at the front of the train because that is best for me. I want to enjoy and appreciate the scenery, instead of a large proportion of the screen taken over by the internal cab.

just because the majority of players don't play this way.. doesn't make the way i play it irrelevant or not worthy.

i don't use free roam, i don't use photo mode, i don't even play the scenarios (i go timetable only) and i will never use livery creator, because i have zero interest in any of those things.. however other people really value those things, and that's great. We all like different things, and just because i don't use those features doesn't mean i believe they don't matter, or that DTG shouldn't bother with those things and focus solely on things i want to see, it doesn't work like that.

all i would like to see, as the number one wish for me in this game, is to have an external camera setting that can be toggled to a front facing external view, essentially exactly what most players see but without the obstruction of the inside of the cab.

if this feature was ever to be made, what is the problem? It doesn't take anything away from any player who wouldn't want to use it, it would just give those like me who would like to use it a more enjoyable experience.

it's like i personally don't want to use livery creator, i have absolutely no interest in it whatsoever, but having it ingame is absolutely no issue at all.. those who like it can use it, and those like me who don't want it don't have to use it, so everybody wins..

Just because some people think 'that's not how it's supposed to be played', the game is set up so it can be played in a variety of ways (there was a thread a while ago where some people don't even drive the trains, they ride as a passenger) that's not for me but it clearly suits a lot of others. If they aren't driving and instead just riding as a passenger are they playing the game wrong? No, because the game is what you want to make it.

all i want is to be able to have a front external camera view, placed at the front of the train, so when i drive (not 'surf' as suggested before), when i DRIVE i can see my whole surroundings. When i drive my car i'm not looking at my steering wheel, or my sun visor, or my radio, i'm looking at my surroundings.. i like the same when i play this game.

ultimately i guess what i'm saying is it would greatly benefit me if the tunnel/bridge issue on external cameras was improved.. if you don't use this feature then a fix has no negative effect on you, in the same way if livery designer or scenario planner was improved, it wouldn't affect me at all but i would never stand in the way of others who use those features getting a fix.. at the end the game is for everyone.

Was the ability to use the external camera inside tunnels not a feature released with TSW 3 or am I going crazy? I remember it was showed off in streams too, and I was using it myself with no issues every now and then.

There’s no such thing as “how the game is supposed to be played”. The very fact that DTG offers us a variety of external camera options confirms that.

There seem to be a few self-appointed authorities on here telling everybody else how they should be playing the game and downplaying their concerns. Maybe just stop speaking on behalf of the devs?

Yeah, it worked fine in TSW3, providing there was no conflict between the camera and the tunnel wall.

Clinchfield is the route that has around the same number of tunnels as KWG. Also you are not understanding the issue or how it could easily be solved.

The whole idea of a fixed camera is that it won’t move at all and is not affected by the route building errors that cause the issue. We are asking for one more camera view, not a massive amount of work. The issue now is that it would need to be done on a train by train basis rather than a core camera feature and had DTG listened to the requests and the reasons why using the 3 camera on the nose doesn’t work a lot earlier they could have added that view to all the trains as standard. Now there are so many trains that it would be a lot of work to add a fixed camera to every train. They added a daft camera view to steam locos because it was a camera view in an old game they used to play but not a useful camera that players actually want. They said to report any instances where the camera gets bounced about but that doesn’t work because they don’t fix any of them when you do report them. A fixed camera solves the issue.

The issue isn’t the same as the normal boundary boxes that appear around physical objects that the number 2 boom camera responds to and that players can’t walk across, it is a bug that affects the number 3 camera because a camera placed on the front of a train does not hit any physical objects and should not be affected but it is. A fixed camera solves an issue for many players and is so easy to implement that it beggars belief that it isn’t standard. You might not want it but many people do and many more would use it if it was available.

On a separate note DTG do need to fix this new extreme reaction that the external camera exhibits, the one that is more severe than it has ever been before.

In most cases I think this is the flying camera clipping with the boxes placed for audio interior sound effects. Those volumes need to have collision (so that the game knows if you're in one) but it needs to be the right sort of collision. This is very much fixable and I'll see what we can do. The repro cases in this thread are useful.

Thanks Will. Probably not related, but another tunnel issue that came up only in TSW4 is that it now rains in tunnels. I noticed this on both Bakerloo and NTP.

i've just done a run on London - Brighton, and the camera now has this issue inside every tunnel on this route.. whereas before it was never an issue on London - Brighton, you could drive uninterrupted on that route through all tunnels, so it seems a recent change or update has affected how the external camera behaves when entering and leaving a tunnel.

it also occurs on both tunnels on the new ECML route, as well as three separate bridges (one halfway between Newark and Grantham, the second bridge south of the passing loops) and two between Retford and Newark in the Tuxford area.

Not to be pedantic, but there was a problem on that London-Brighton route previously. I reported it in Aug last year and, to the best of my knowledge, never got fixed:
Would suck to get this new tunnel issue fixed and still be left with the old one, lol.

there has always been a problem from day one on this route (the two bridges close to hassocks) and those are still present today.. my point was that since the new update/new tsw4 release, it now also occurs in addition at all the tunnels on the route too.

so the two hassocks bridges issue still remains, but now with additional issues on entry/exit to every single tunnel, which was never an issue before.. so there are new, extra tunnel/camera issues here too

The new behaviour is much worse and affects tunnels on every route I’ve driven on with an external camera. It seems like it a new addition that is causing this as Will has stated above and I do hope it gets sorted soon. It’s definitely worse than the longstanding issues with occasional invisible walls.

exactly this! There have always been the odd tunnels and bridges it has always occured at (the two bridges near Hassocks on London-Brighton being the obvious ones that come to mind) but it's never been this bad where it is literally EVERY tunnel that is suddenly affected.

Really hope this can be fixed and revert back to how it was, and happy to see others have taken note of this and raised the concern, as sometimes i feel like i'm the only one who notices these problems with the external camera!

There´s absolutely no need to have collisions on camera asset itself. It collides with everything which is next to tracks, from signal poles to trackside buildings and tunnels obviously. And despite it has collisions enabled in many cases you can see through objects, terrain or driver´s body because the collissions place it inside 3D objects themselves, so there´s no added value on that feature. It would be much better to have true free cam movements and that would be less annoying during gameplay too. Please, at least include an option in user interface to disable those collisions as proposed above.

    Cheers

The total elimination of all camera collisions would solve many issues. What’s the worst that could happen, we might see behind some scenery and realise we are not in the real world? I’m sure we could cope. If that is possible to implement then it might be a catch all solution for DTG.

if it's a case of camera collisions being the problem, then hopefully it would be a relatively easy fix, i definitely want this to be looked into and resolved and hope it can be sorted!

I'd love for the camera collisions to be an option to remove. When you pull up at a station and want to watch from the platform it often stops people walking because my camera is there lol

I know what's causing this and I've got a fix lined up (in Core, so applying to all routes). As always, can't promise when it will launch because the release pipeline is not my job. Thanks for the report!

(Rain in Tunnels on legacy routes is fixed in development versions of TSW and will hopefully also come out at some point soon)

    hey up fellow train surfers

as like many of you here, i like to drive the from the outside view, sometimes on the front of the train and have the same issue with the tunnels.

i don't know if it works on all routes, i did this on the london commuter route, if you press the map button before entering a tunnel then press the map button again shortly after entering the tunnel, it seems to allow control of the camera while inside the tunnel, the camera does go back to its usual issue when exiting the tunnel.

    Hey!

so before the latest update, there were 5 separate locations of the front fixed external camera bouncing around under/through certain tunnels and bridges.

3 of those 5 have now been fixed with the latest update. The locations that are fixed are the tunnels to the north and south of Grantham, along with the short tunnel near Tuxford between Retford and Newark.

However there are still 2 locations that remain unfixed. These two locations are under bridges and not tunnels (and i imagine that is why they were missed in the latest fix)

one location is between Grantham and Newark, and is under the second to last bridge before the crossovers as shown below:

    IMG_6294.jpeg

This bridge location is 6 MILES SOUTH OF NEWARK.

the second location is between Newark and Retford in the Tuxford area, and is in a location under two bridges that are immediately close to eachother, as shown below:

    IMG_6300.jpeg IMG_6301.jpeg IMG_6302.jpeg

This location is 22 MILES SOUTH OF DONCASTER, and 1.3 MILES BEFORE THE 115 MPH LIMIT.

these camera bouncing issues are still at these two locations, and in both directions

Also please don't think that in my photos the passing trains cause the issue, it was purely a coincidence they were there at the same time as i passed the two locations. The camera issue occurs also when there are no other trains in the area, and occurs in both directions, on every service at every time of day.

so overall, thank you dtg for fixing the 3 issues of the front facing camera bouncing around uncontrollably in the tunnels.. and if it could be possible to fix the final 2 issues under these two bridge locations this route would (at least from my own perspective) be absolutely perfect.

    thank you!
    Katia

Surely this is a joke? Right? What would happen to your camera tripod, if you set up on top of the train and went into a tight tunnel. Think about it. How can the external camera give you a view from outside, when there is none? Just press the 3 key and set up your external on the nose of the loco, then switch to that when in a tunnel. I use this view to see the gradient of a slope. If you put it low enough, it's ideal. All joking aside, it can hardly render an outside view when the outside is solid concrete. I still think you're pulling my leg (Kidding) with this though. If so, then you got me.

This was a bug that is now fixed. Not a joke. You are far too late to join this party.

Instead of being rude explain why this is a point..... This issue effects players they enjoy the views outside the train and use the external camera.... It sound strange and i never used that but there are players they like it.

If this bug has been fixed at some point, the patch must've missed my PS5. It's a true PITA on Bernina with all those tunnels and bridges. Yes, I'm one of those who like to place the outside camera right in the driver's LOS and enjoy the view.
