I really like Dynamic weather on TSW! But I have noticed, it changes to almost all stages on just one trip! You goes from sunny, cloudy, rain, and storms, including lighting ones. I believe this is not "real" for a regular drive you do on the sim, of around 30 - 60 minutes. The weather might change just one or two times. What do you think?
Dynamic Weather needs some work doing to improve it, I’m glad we get to have changes but some of it is quite bizarre/out of reality. I also don’t think Rain is programmed for Summer Months in TSW, which isn’t very England so to say edit: changes are quite realistic when on the move, often times I’ve heard that a town/village about 10mins drive has had bad rain but where I am is dry.
The one thing about dynamic weather that annoys me is snow. In the winter months, it bizarrely never rains. That's unrealistic; it doesn't always snow in winter.
In Tramsim, players can set how quickly the weather changes and what they want the weather to be later on. So you can set the current weather to sunny but have it rain later at a fast, normal, or slow rate. Other games have this feature so I see no reason why TSW can't. That would be one way of solving this problem
Sometimes I switch between dynamic and static, mostly because I feel whenever it starts heavy raining it feels like it doesn't stop and I find this annoying especially when it happens right at the beginning of the service. Other than that, I also feel the whether changes too quickly. The clouds roll in over a matter of seconds when it should be multiple minutes.
Dynamic weather is a feature I should like, but I hardly use it anymore due to the same reasons echoed in this thread. Plus, probably the most frustrating issue is when it always starts raining while there's no clouds and blue skies.
More like a feature that should've been in the game from the get go. Many other games have it that use UE4 and it just goes to show how flawed the implementation of dynamic weather is.
It should've been, but then again it probably would have got worse than what it is now. At the moment, I find myself using custom weather more, no more rain without clouds then.
fog could use some at start of service roll dice of yes or no fog my experience here in the Netherlands that fog usually only occurs in the morning hours at least then the change is the highest i guess it also depends on in what country you live and what kind of scenery good thing there is a godmode tool
Perhaps. But in games like tramsim for instance, the weather transitions are just fine. If you set it to rain at a slow pace when it is currently sunny, it takes a while for the rain to come. I've had experiences where it hasn't rained after 5 hours of play so if implemented correctly, it wouldn't be an issue
Funny you should say that, I did a journey run on the Harlem Line a couple of hours ago, it was in Winter with snow on the ground, started with light snow, but then towards the end of the run it rained. Not heavily but it was definitely raining.
I don’t use dynamic weather at all. I just find it completely unrealistic. It’s a nice feature in theory but it just has too many flaws. My method is to just use the weather app on my iPhone to find out the current weather for where I’m running the train at, which is almost always just Metrolink so 80% of the time it’s just sunny. But occasionally there are cloudy, overcast days. And it can be quite foggy in the early mornings in the Antelope Valley. You get the rainy days here and there as well.
I never use dynamic weather - too many unrealistic changes within a few miles, better to use GodMode if you're on PC. ETS2 has a simple and perfectly working solution, there's a "rain probability" slider in the Options menu.
Another extreme form of this "weather switch within seconds" issue stated before is if you are in one of the big train stations and weather is set to rain outside, from the inside it looks like it's clear and sunny weather outside. Even if you go along the platform towards outside there is no change until suddenly you reached an invisible border to the outside scenery, finding yourself in pouring rain. I can understand to actually build the station scenery for big stations as a kind of separate module to not sacrifice performance for unnecessary elements, however it feels so unrealistic when you see clear weather from the inside and then when you come outside, there maybe is a thunderstorm happening around you.
And like other TSW features. There really is lack of continuous improvements. They just release the MVP, and then it takes months, or years for any incremental updates to the feature. It is based on temperature, if outside temperature is sub zero, then it is snowing. When it is above zero, then it is rain. Each route has a temperature curve based on the average temperature for individual days. The temperature also changes based on time and elevation. So you can have transitions from snow to rain and rain to snow. The issue is that rain obliterates all snow cover within a minute, so that really breaks the immersion.
I find dynamic weather bizarre and very inconsistent. For example last night I did a run in a Peak on NTP starting in a clear day without a cloud in sight but by Huddersfield it had resorted to a lightening storm with heavy rain. I know weather here is inconsistent but going from without a cloud in sight to thunder, rain and lightening over about 20 miles and 30 minutes just doesn't seem particularly likely and not something I've experienced in my many years. In contrast to this I did a run on the ECML from Donny to Peterborough, where I started with light clouds, and by Retford they had built up to a light shower, at Newark the rain laid off and then increased to light rain again on the way to Grantham, then stopped again at Stoke Junction and then raining again at Tallington until I arrived at Posh. This pattern were very good, incredibly likely and a pattern I can recall experiencing various times. This last run is what I expect from dynamic weather. MML is another that does dynamic weather well too, thinking about it.
I remember their was a similair discussion about the Dynamic Weather feature after TSW3 release where someone from DTG if I remember correctly also posted the possibilities of changes into specific scenarions. However I also still feel that the system is not correctly working. First of all it feels like the changes are always the same, for exampe try Niddertalbahn with "light clouds" after 10-15mins it will always start raining, at least in summer. Second is that the changes are not feeling dynamic. Weather changes just abruptly which is extremely noticeable when you start your service with misty or fog setting. Weather just clears up within a few seconds. Also it is correct that in RL on a longer train ride you could have lots of different weathers to encounter. So in reality when driving from Kassel to Würzburg with the ICE you can see when you approach dark clouds and bad weather or maybe even a thunderstorm, but not in TSW. Problem here is that in TSW you don't drive "into the rain" or "into the storm" like you do fly into some weather fronts in FS for example, the weather on the whole route just changes from one second to the other. For example in newer racing sims you can have parts for the track still dry while others are wet which is realistic too.
it's a game and not a weather simulation. I assume the feature of dynamic weather was introduced to enhance 'game play' on the consoles rather than to deepen the simulation When correctly implemented, do the few passengers waiting on the platform put their umbrella's up and pull their overcoats tight when the rain starts to fall? Or does the braking power decrease when rain falls in autumn season?
The game is named "Train Sim World" I assume? Not "Train Play World"? So I don't get that point, other simulators have proven it is possible to deliver a realistic dynamic weather experience. So why not TSW? It always sounds like an excuse, this feature has been implented with TSW3, so it wouldn't be unnatural to expect this to evolve with TSW4 from "Dynamic Weater 1.0" to "Dynamic Weather 2.0" or something like that. I personally would wish for realistic weather data such we do have it in Flight Simulator for example. Why must we always be happy with something half baked instead of getting better features? Uhm,yes the put up their umbrellas? Uhm, yes as far as implemented rain and snow do have an impact on breaking and also on accerlation.
Actually the weather does have a significant effect on driving styles, especially in autumn and when it's icy. I don't believe there is simulation of leaves on the line, but rain and snow do affect the trains in game. I see where your coming from with the point, but weather certainly has an impact on driving in real life and so should in game too.
Might as well make completely fantasy routes then with no correlation of real world locations... After all it's just a game and not a scenery simulator, right? Personally I have always found dynamic weather pointless. It was not neccessary. I am not against the feature feature though - but now that it exsists, it should be tweaked to work correctly.
The biggest problem is the temperature sets. In winter in the UK it's always below 0c when in reality we rarely dip below 5c during the day. And in summer the temperature doesn't go above 27c from my experience when again it often reaches into the mid 30s. Snow is the worst as you start off sunny and within 10 minutes the entire route is covered with the type of snow that would stop service (over the rail head in places). I have resorted to overriding dynamic weather as it's so unrealistic.
Dynamic weather, eye adaptation, snow blooming and even the upcoming suspension feature are gimmicks that mostly do not work very well. And they are just that - gimmicks. They do not advance the game in any real, substantive way. I could continue to play the game quite happily if they suddenly all disappeared.
I agree. They are nice features but very gimmicky indeed. I just wish DTG would take the feedback and make improvements.
Nothing much to add. Just that those gimmicks make good for a fancy PR smokescreen to justify what actually isn't justifiable: The fanfare about a "new" version every year.
Well you’ve no doubt heard the old saying about 4 seasons in one day in the UK! Same abroad though. It was slightly annoying on my debut run on the beautiful Bernina when sunny skies at the top degenerated into fog and rain on the way down and by the time I got into Italy it was a right old pea souper! I guess the uptake was that I was above the clouds to begin with? I suspect it was just an accident but that’s how I preferred to interpret it.
They are true to reality features and if they worked well they would have more impact and make an even larger difference to the game with them all at once. I think the issues is like passengers for example as one of them, they don’t work as intended and have been left for way too long, people therefore experience a bugged out version and you ain’t going to get much joy from an issue plagued feature never mind several TSW’s core is very empty and with those it improves (provided they work and ain’t bugged to the point of non existent)
For those who complain that the rapid cycling of dynamic weather is unrealistic, I present the next 24 hours in Chicago.
Haha yes we can get all 4 seasons in a day in the UK too. But I do object slightly when I slog all the way to the top of the Bernina only to be met with dense fog once again!
Not talking about a 24 HR time..when you are driving a train for a hr. As it stands now, it's unrealistic and needs fixed.
As an amateur meteorologist I was pleased that Dynamic Weather is a feature but it's still very unrealistic. My biggest gripe is that most periods of rain become thunderstorms. That doesn't even happen in Tornado Alley in the USA, let alone the UK. Thunderstorms build and create severe local conditions like gusty winds and hail, the rain usually starts suddenly rather than slowly building up. I'd love it if the thunderstorms were anchored to one location so you can see distant flashes then drive through it, rather than it be a feature of all showers. Though if after 4 years Microsoft and Asobo still can't create realistic thunderstorms in MSFS, I would think DTG would also have struggles modelling Cumulonimbus clouds so they act in a realistic way.
Dynamic weather is a fine balance in a game like this I think... most days in real life, the weather never changes much all day... and fi it does it's maybe over the course of like 6 hours. Most people don't play the game for hours and hours at a time. Most people play it 45m to maybe 2 hours at a time. So if the weather changes were super realistic you'd rarely see them and the dynamic weather would be kind of pointless. But if they are too prevalent every day seems like a Biblical storm. TSW was a little too frequent when they first added the feature but I don't find it much better now. I still typically turn it off and just set the weather to what I want it as a custom.
