Hello, Not critical but would be nice to know. Trying to set up a scenario on the ECML. Picture says it... So I start at Peterborough, the steam would be a stopping passenger (in spirit, no stops, but forced on the slow lines by no less than 16 go via instructions required) with the 47 being an express. I'd like to run the 47 behind the steamer for a short while. There is a two track section just south of Pb, and then this one. It appears to me that at the slightest interference of the two trains, the express gets priority. I had to delay its start by no less than 5 minutes, and run it no less than 4 entire signal blocks (seeing two greens ahead) behind, or the steam is just blocked at the station exit right away, just like at this picture location. Noting that a lot pass-by moves of old scenarios are broken, is my only solution to define the steam as express and possibly the 47 as stopping? (The latter could help exactly due to the issue I raised: as long as the steamer isn't much behind, the 47 would be held back, removing the need for a stop or two.) Thanks!
Is this a standard scenario? Is the Class 47 the player loco? If so then I guess the dispatcher is sort-of right in that the express should have priority (unless I have misunderstood). If this is a QD then the player loco gets priority automatically though Kim Olesen has some clever ideas on that (which i still haven't tried out...).
A free roam (I intend to run all four trains), but I assume no significant difference. I did timetable the 47's starting station stop. Yes, you understood well. I suppose the solution is to invert the train priorities then. It has probably no other effect. (I was hoping tracks dedicated to express / stopper, respectively, the stopper automatically picking the slow lines.) For now not an issue as they are both passengers, but it could be a headache to prioritize freight over passenger. Thanks!
Yes - I played with the track types early on in TS and never saw any difference. Probably a bright idea that never got taken forward?
Can always try having them with the same priority, That way once the overtaking lane comes up the train behind should have the higher speed along the fast lines and naturally overtake
Try routing the player train via markers that are on the same paths as the trains you want ahead of it. Put in extra scenario markees if necesary. When doing this in QD (and i suspect FR as well) you must not give the dispatcher any choices on routing of any trains. That entails putting a scenarion marker after each and every switch in the path of the player train. And then ofcourse route the player train through these markers.
You can achieve the effects you want by using timed (clock symbol) stops or go vias. Overtaking will happen when the dispatcher decides it can let a train pass you without breaking your timing, or vice versa. It's not service classes alone. If you're an Express Service and plan a long enough stop, a following Stopper can overtake you. Make changes to the timings and compare the timetables for changes.

Thanks, I just didn't want to keep reviving, but I managed, thanks to the advice! I realize now my last post didn't confirm success, so.. my impolite bad. I flipped the train priorities, with the steam service being an express, it had priority in the section I desired it. (15 miles south of Peterborough) I suppose equal priority works, too, as long as the second train doesn't overtake in the first loop before the merge. I tried timed stops, but it needs lots of intermediate ones, otherwise ... if the dispatcher calculates that the higher priority train is catching up, it simply holds the lower priority from the get go in the loop. So I'd need to hold the second train back (percentage or timing) but only until the quadruple track section. Free Roam timetabling works just as fine as any other scenario type. I tend to use this combination even just to have a train run ahead to set the switches - and possibly some cautions. Even ends if there is a final destination (obviously not portals). ps. Not entirely sure / confirmed but it's kinda funny to watch a steam loco with default everything on the ECML. 93.75 mph with a Black 5, or a Class 08... yay!
