What may kill off KGX-PET is the distance. It is 3 times longer than DON-LDS or DON-YRK so the development time won't be as appealing to DTG. Whilst I agree that having York in the game would be a fantastic addition, extending to Leeds will give more traffic variety in a much shorter distance.
Distance is probably not much of a problem for Peterborough to London, the traffic and stations will make it a route what requires more investment than typical (meaning probably it would be left for something like TSW 6/7/8 etc) and not the typical dlc throughout the year, I wouldn’t say 5 though as 4 was ECML aswell and I don’t think they would do it twice in a row. think of it like BML (which is probably more intensive) they done it as a flagship, but not something of the depth you see in the usual dlc As for the York Dilemma, Personally I see 4 possibilities the last being the least desirable 1. the next section upwards (as in further north not ruling out Newcastle to Edinburgh section could still arrive beforehand) will start in Doncaster, problem with this being Newcastle is the logical stop but quite a way. 2. Doncaster to Peterborough is extended to York, the next section up starts at York and ECML could still remain on course to be completed in 4 sections. 3. Doncaster to York is put in via a route like Doncaster to Leeds and the next section north starts at York, meaning the section between York and Doncaster would be on the other route (not the worst idea but without route connectings it’s a bit of nuisance for ECML full runs in future) 4. the section between York and Doncaster is foreseeably missed and the next section up starts at York. (personally I would vote 2,1,3 and not mention 4 )
I've been thinking lately that a new Rockwood to Johnstown route would be really fun to connect Sand Patch Grade with Horseshoe Curve.
