PC Class 142 Gear Hold Function

So after the latest update, the gear hold function has now been implemented on the 142, except the switch isn't clickable & there doesn't seem to be any key commands for it.

 

It’s interactive for me on PlayStation… no idea how you’re supposed to use it though

 

It's purpose is to hold a gear longer for hill climbing, just like a bus automatic gearbox.

 

Well it only works with OG Leyland engines only as it’s for hills to avoid losing power

 

If you are going up a hill and the train is just going fast enough, it will switch to a higher gear. If the hill is too steep in this gear then it will slow and obviously drop back to the lower gear.
Once in the lower gear it will speed up again and the cycle continues.

This creates a very rough ride for your passengers as it constantly switches between gears and isn't great for the engine.

If you experience this then switch the 'hold gear' switch when in the lower gear and it will stay there, giving a smoother ride. Once the gradient levels out you can flick it off and the train will move up to higher gears again.

 

Yes I know it's only for the 4 speed SCG gearbox, the switch isn't clickable & there isn't any key commands to use it.

 

As a bus driver, I'm well aware of how a automatic gearbox works, I was simply stating the switch seems to be just static & has no function in game.

It holds the gear on series x, I chose a service out of journey mode, put it to hold gear and into notch 7 it didn’t leave gear 1 until I turned of the hold.

 

It's not clickable? But how do console users select it?

 

Hover over it with cursor and turn it right to “on” holding “A” (XSX)

 

Looks like this on XSX, then it’s just a matter of turning it right.

Works fine on series S and does exactly as intended. You stay in that gear, it's pretty cool and accurate..

 

I can confirm that the hold gear function works fine on the 1985-1991 Class 142 Pacer with the self changing gearbox. Later models with the Voith transmission might not. I'm not sure if it is supposed to work on those variants.
The switch itself is not a clickable switch but one you have to hold and move from off to on.

 

By the sounds of it a couple of mods cause this not to work on PC for boring reasons. My passenger LOD mod is one of them and I’ll update it as soon as I get chance. I need to apply the same mod to the updated file(s) but it’s Friday evening and life etc. As it stands the mod is usurping the updated version hence you won’t see any of the updates working. In other words the mod works, it’s just nerfing the update.

In the meantime please just remove the mod. I’ll post here when it’s updated.

 

That makes sense as I've not had chance yet to re-enable mods yet since the update. Does god mode and your updated ini files affect the hold gear function?

I don't have the passenger LOD mod & the gear hold switch isn't working.

Don’t know, one I don’t use. It was mentioned on Discord but I don’t remember which it was. It modded a number of things at once though. There aren’t many BPO mods so will only take people a second to find it.

It's one of ROB S's mods I think the file name is something like BR RVV.pak? It's similar to what Spike has been doing with his cabview mod. You'll need to remove that as well for the gear hold to work.

Removed the suspect mods & now it works as intended.
