So, let´s talk about it, there was a couple of minutes of TSC talk... but it only showcased third party routes coming to Steam in the future. No talk about the core updates or any first party releases. Has Dovetail given up on building content for TSC? What´s going on with the core? I´m disappointed not to get any word on the general future of TSC. Also we have RSSLO, Railtraction and Train Motion all joining the crowd of TSW third party producers. Will they all now drop TSC just like TSG and Rivet did? What´s everyone thoughts?
Depends where the bigger market is I suppose. If TSW is an evolution of TSC then I could see the movement across of the developers and the eventual dropping of TSC. Few years I'd have thought.
It was previously said that development of new TS DLC would not resume until after the core updates, and there is no evidence that the latter has been dropped. Of course, DTG not making any DLC for TS anymore would not be a bad thing, as most of DTG's output it truly terrible and not worth playing. People were saying the same thing three years ago, and it hasn't really happened. The mod support in TSW is abysmal and not many developers see the need to be held back by DTG's systems and processes to create content for a different game, when TSC already has a large playerbase with a very active modding community.
Moving to TSW would mean all your sales would have to be through DTG channels, with DTG taking a cut. I wonder what that would mean for developers like RSSLO who have their own website with some TSC products unique to it.
Not just RSSLO, but a host of other third party developers. Though the RSSLO stuff is slowly making it’s way to steam.
They aren’t to my knowledge. Where did you pick that up? They already have 4 TSC routes announced for 24.
Anybody know what is being developed at the moment? Genuine question not on social media so I miss loads I bet. But seems like ats has been dead for ages. Seen the talk about just trains slowing down releases. Even dovetail stopping, only armstrongpowerhouse seem to still be developing content. I know there are a lot of other developers who offer steam and routes from the past but I look at modern UK
When it comes to the modern era there isn't much stuff that hasn't been done in some form. The trains that don't have any presence yet (this is excluding trains that have been 'bodged' like the Class 376 and 80x) are the Aventras, the Class 357, the Civities, the D-trains, the 810s, the Siemens/CAF 332/3s, a proper Class 373, the Junipers (bar the 460s), and probably a few more I forgot about. As for routes, the ATS WCML project is ongoing, as are some other ATS projects for TS. JT's still going; they have very recently released the Wessex Mainline. TS Rolling Stock has been making exactly what you expect and have released some decent-looking packs in the past few months. Of course, if you only look at modern UK stuff you're going to be limited in what is in production regardless.
If that is the case why is Just Trains selling it's own route on the JT website? https://www.justtrains.net/product/train-sim-world-4-blackpool-branches-preston-blackpool-ormskirk
I don't know, maybe they are selling an activation code? Since they claim a multi-platform download I don't know how else they'd do it.
I always felt for the DTG route builders who produced a lot of excellent and good value content which was inevitably universally panned by the 3rd party acolytes at the top end of the UK community. I'm afraid £15 a pop for third party nine mile route extensions is beyond what I feel comfortable paying so DTG's absence will be a miss for me. I feel slightly stupid now for enjoying so much of their "truly terrible content" albeit using enhanced rolling stock but I will continue to do so regardless until such times as they prise it away from me and put everything behind a subscription wall.
I wish we could have had a bit of an update where Dovetail are up to with the Core, but personally I think Dovetail are doing the right thing stabilizing and updating the core for the future. I Play TSW as well, but keep going back to TSC because of the shear volume of stuff I have already bought but not played. I believe the GUI was to be updated. Please give us an update DTG

I'll get GOBLIN on TSW as I worked at Barking Station. I'm also waiting for ATS to release their updated GEML and the Stadler pack and then I'm calling time on Train Sims. I paid £90 for Flight Simulator in 2020, I can go anywhere in the world in it, I've had 4 years of free updates and additions. I have bought a few planes and a couple of favourite airports but my overall spend is a fraction of what I've forked out on buggy and underwhelming DTG content. When MSFS 2024 releases those products will port over to the new version and for price of 3 TSW routes I can go anywhere in the world again for another 4 years. I know the economies of scale and all that, but when you're looking at cutting back your spending the low-value hobbies go first.
I spent 80 ~ 90 quid on Flight Simulator and played it for less than an hour, certainly wasn't value for money in my case, I've spent a couple of grand on TSC and have over 1700 hours in it and will have countless more, that for me is high value content. Not arguing with you just pointing out perspectives.
Could DTG be charging a license fee to use their software? Is it proprietary or open source? As a side note, it seems that there is something inherent in TSW to keep routes and scenarios less asset dense and a bit shorter than TSC as well as there aren't any American steam engines in TSW yet. Could this be that there is an issue in processing the data necessary to run these in TSW because they are more complicated?
I expect it's more that steam in general is both more complicated to develop and doesn't sell very well, add US content always being low effort (and likely also not selling super well) and you've got a recipe to go nowhere
The only reason content doesn't sell well is because it's low effort. While it applies to both, Victory Works commented on the steam issue in a separate thread and said that they are able to make a living off their (very good) steam DLC, so it's hard to believe that steam trains don't sell well. Spirit of Steam sold very well but was not very good; Peak Forest was no better and sold worse because of the bad impression left by SOS and the lack of improvements over it. The routes alone are alright (third party developers still do it better though), but the trains really are almost universally terrible.
Can't really disagree, the steam simulation for SOS (don't have any of the others) is busted (and I believe remains so) and while the route had potential, it just ends up feeling completely empty with such limited stock layered in.
That is what always put me off the immersion is ruined when you see no traffic and empty yards with virtually nothing in them.
Same for me. No traffic, empty yards, just doesn't gel with me. I remember buying Train Sim World : CSX Heavy Haul, when it came out in 2017, hoping it would be the natural progression of TSC. The same as TSC was to MSTS. I was really disappointed with the lack customisation I could do the route timetable etc, so consequently didn't play it after a few hours. Move on 6 years, I bought TSW4 and Spirit of Steam, at I must add a very discounted price. Still very disappointed, not very immersive, lacking all the things that make TSC such a great game. Had a look at the TSW PC Editor. Looks like you have to jump through multiple hoops just to do anything, certainly not for the casual player. Definitely sticking with TSC.
