Curious to see what unusual formations there are / were out in the real world that we can now recreate.
I start the thread with this CL31 / CL08 combo seen in this photo.

Friend of mine who was a guard in scotland once said they had a couple of wagons and a brake that needed moving over the forth bridge - and the only thing that had an engine in it in the yard there was a HST power car - so yes, they hooked it up and took the wagons where they needed to go. :)

Some Class 66 locomotives being taken to Port of Halifax for export:

    Based on this:

Not exactly the right location, livery or class, but hopefully close enough

    Definitely "close enough" :)
These examples might also give us an excuse, later on, to recreate the same image but with a community livery or, even, to encourage us to make our own.

    Here's another one.
Probably more a Livery Manager example at the moment but, when the 1938 stock is available, Formation Manager will give me the opportunity to make the correct 5-car set. (Currently it is the 4-car bit of a BKL 7-car set). And I now notice I need to make the doors, on the just coming into shot coach, all red.

Simple, long-distance passenger with a GEVO, an SD40-2, and 5 Amfleet coaches. The Amfleet coaches are stand-ins for the yellow passenger wagons you sometimes see behind UP power. And it gives a good idea of how an Amtrak P42 pack would play.

I think what's good about these formations so far is that they are all really short.
In most cases I think Formation Designer will encourage us to make long formations as they seem more 'worthwhile' as they go past us in-game. However you can get just as much interest, and curiosity, from very short formations. (As is shown by Matt's story of shunting with an HST power-car).
    Keep them coming :)

In my experience I've found that if you can dream up a consist, at one point, somewhere, it did actually happen.

    Particularly in disruption or testing.

Those were the test trains for the power cars. Makes sense that it doesn’t work in TSW out of the box since they had to be modified to couple to ICE power cars.

Might be a while until we can recreate these scenes but definitely unusual.

The time when BR took its latest railway technology to display at a rail show in Germany. The International Transport and Traffic Exhibition (IVA88) in Hamburg.

They ferried over a class 90, class 91, class 89 'badger', a class 150 dmu and I believe two early mk4 coaches.

Yes these pictures are great. Very interesting to see this documented and, certainly the formation of the shunter and CL91 loco will, hopefully, be possible when DTG sort us out a 225 set. (I'm sure that Matt is working on it right now :D )

You see it occasionally these days with single hst power cars moving from depot to depot.
Always makes me wonder what would happen if it needs to reverse to avoid disruption.

A pair of WDM-3D & WDP-4B hauling a Talgo variable gauge set in push-pull configuration.
Couldn't find a better photograph but the formation was totally out of proportions :D

"Camel hump" train - Herbert aka OBB 1144 + Wiesel dosto + 3x CityShuttle carriages + Wiesel dosto control car :)

tried to do sth similar in-game, took BR 182 + dosto + 3x IC coaches + dosto control car, but it didnt work from the control car end :D

I would LOVE to drive this kind of formation in-game... dunno about other routes, but I know this one operates on Wien Westbahnhof - St.Polten route via the old Westbahn corridor, as REX service I believe

I haven't yet done anything with the formation designer yet but there's a few consists I've actually seen that I wanna recreate.

Had to wait for a certain loco to be released before I could do this :) The coaches are only as close as TSW lets me get since the exact ones are not in-game.

This is the shuttle train between Koblenz Hbf and the DB Museum at Koblenz-Lützel used for the museum's summer festival 2022:

Hopefully when AC Electrics are added to TSW, I'll be able to recreate this consist. FB_IMG_1721547498392.jpg

I have actually ridden the Camel Hump train IRL a couple days ago as a passenger... super cool, and even had a bit of scary moment (for me at least) when approaching Neulengbach - train slowed down below 10 kph (as the speed sign showed) and leaned A LOT to the right in the bend... thankfully, that didnt last long... I assume they have the section marked for repairs :)

"Camel Hump" train consists of OBB 1144 Herbert, a Wiesel dosto coach, 3 CityShuttle carriages, and a Wiesel dosto with control cab... sometimes there is 4 CityShuttle carriages and one more dosto, that may vary, I guess depending on service :) as far as I know, only old Westbahn from Wien Westbahnhof to St. Polten via Neulengbach uses this kind of consist, but I may be wrong :) why? no idea... maybe balance into the tight bends at the edges of cliffs that make up a large portion of old Westbahn? lol :D

If we get a Deltic (although we could substitute for a 37 or 40) we could recreate this formation (6Z55 Milford West Sidings - Neville Hill (Leeds)) but instead of HKA’s (because they aren’t spawnable in formation designer) we could use HOA.

    Here’s the picture IMG_5496.jpeg

With WCMLOS, you might be able to do that.
(If you make a 86 livery on a 87 it could work)

We could almost create this formation, although we are missing the barrier wagon and the BR 139

You could recreate it with some liberties by using the Roos-t as a stand-in for the barrier car and the 110 for the 139 though it’s of course not 1:1. Yet another argument for getting a 140 (or 139) in TSW :)

But we don’t have any HST power cars with buffers, right?
