Just received the TSW4 Disk, instslled via Steam on my PC. Got opening screen and got camera which I can move, but after that nothing is happening. I selected 'Route' but again clicking on things there does nothing, what am I missing? Col.
First thing would be to verify your files in Steam, sounds like it may not have downloaded everything. Got to ask though, why buy on disc and not just direct from Steam given it probably needs to download a huge swathe of data and will need Steam running to play the game?
Had I known there was a disk version of TSW2, I would have bought it (Even though I would need to buy a disk reader, I like having physical copies of games on the shelf) However, with the introduction of TSW3 and TSW4, I am happy with the ease of transferring the digital purchase.
That would probably be pointless. You would need an internet connection for the Steam and/or Dovetail Live verification every time you launched the game. So even if you have a physical copy of the game, it will be a drinks coaster if the Steam or DTG servers are ever switched off temporarily for maintenance or permanently.
To be honest I thought it would be just an install from the disk but it said I needed to logon to Steam first then insert the disk to install. It took a while to do, then it also installed updates whatever they were. then after all that it said there was an error with the updates, I clicked on it and it did it again then when I thought that was it, it then did a verify. I'm still learning it all, some things I'm clicking on and they are not working, I'm still in the training learning to drive. I was in one engine and got told to turn on the headlights, I was looking all over but couldn't find the switch. Col.
I played as a passenger last night to try it out, it was good, tried to do it again this morning but could for the life of me find the right combinations. I was looking for the walk mode to go to the platform. Col.
To The Trains --> route selection --> select route --> select timetable (the first of the 4 options) --> select On Foot --> Select time and place
Yes TY, I got it after I posted sorry, I went on a train in Germany, it stopped at a lot of stations but it started to rain and what impressed me was the passengers changed from light clothing to rain gear plus a lot were carrying umberellas. The rain never stopped the whole journey but still it was very real. Col.
I saw a post where someone said it would be good to ride not as a driver but next to him to see how he controlled the train, this would/might be good as a kind of training to see how its done properly. Col.
I just did my first proper route driving. It was in France from Avignon to ??? anyway I didn't need to stop at stations and it was a long journey which gave me chance to practice the speed and braking plus use the other things. I realise at the top right corner was a score thing. I missed a few popup messages but I managed to get from A - B and stop at the station. I think I upset a few passengers though as they arrived a bit late lol.
I just completed my 2nd proper run as driver, I made no mistakes but I think I need to just go a bit faster on some runs between stations. Also when is a good time to apply brakes when approaching the station, I start just before I get on the red section but sometimes I think I stop just that bit too soon? Col.
All down to practice I'm afraid. There's no "one size fits all" approach to braking, it depends on speed limits, braking distance, weight of train etc. Best advice I can give is to make sure you're going no more than 30mph or 15mph for short platforms.
Well, that depends very much on the type of train you're driving and the equipment employed. TSW might have its flaws, but Simugraph - while it ain't perfect - is known for simulating driving and brake dynamics quite reasonably. Confirmed by some real world drivers. And wouldn't it be boring if any possible train consist would have the same behavior, regardless of equipment, time / weather conditions and grades? High Speed is a different story altogether, but for the village hopping passenger services like the german Regional Expresses I have the thumb rule that you should have around 40kph (25 mph) at the beginning of a normal platform length to come to a comfortable stop at the end. Caveat being icy or wet weather conditions. Think about your passengers as well. They're total morons in TSW, but still have their feelings. I guess ........ would say ........ suppose so .....
And with US heavy freight you need to be thinking about slowing down a mile or two ahead. Bear in mind too that dynamic brakes are more effective at lower speeds. Sherman Hill has caught more than one of us out where the line speed is quite high, running down into Cheyenne or Laramie at 45 to 50 MPH and the dynamics do very little. Rule of thumb is no more than 30 MPH if you want to keep control on the grade. Anyhow unlike TSC, TSW doesn’t really penalise you for being late so take your time and it’s better to crawl down the platform at 15MPH and make the stop a minute or two late than overshoot, which IRL would then entail tea and biscuits while having an awkward conversation with your manager!
