One thing that would be cool is if the controls of the engineer moved when ai is controlling. Then could see a bit more of where to brake and how much. Also I have to go over and turn on the gauge lights for the ai lol.

  2. Yeah that would be awesome. Tbh Ive never looked at the controls while the ai has it. Next time Im in I'll have a look.

If you have TrackIR, you can sit in the Brake van and get an accurate Guard's eye view of the journey and even apply the hand brake on downhill gradients to help with braking. (not sure how effectvie this is though!)

  4. Does trackir work in TSW3?? I've never tried it!

I do it from time to time especially when I want to check out a route without thinking too much. It’s actually pretty great how right they got the “feel” of being a passenger. I’ve never driven a train but I’ve been a passenger plenty of times and other than maybe stop announcements the TSW experience is pretty convincing. The passenger cars right down to the little labels are detailed.

Riding the caboose in Clinchfield is neat too.

Actually one time I decided to ride from Providence to Boston on an Amtrak. About half way through I was a bit bored and grabbed my Nintendo Switch and started playing a game. Then I realized how ridiculous it was that I was sitting in front of my PS5 playing a game where I’m sitting on a train while at the same time having playing another game on a handheld.

Yep works a treat and when sitting in the guard's seat in the brake van you can get a great view out of the little Ducket window along the length of the train. Reminded me of actually being in the seat back in the day.

I must admit riding in the brake van (well, using the camera there anyway) along the old Bath route a few times in Railworks, and I dimly recall sitting in a carriage in a scenario for the German route in TSW1, but otherwise I've not done the passenger thing. I'm going to give it a go now on a few different routes. Thanks for the push ^.^

    Kind regards,
    Dave

I don't find that ridiculous. I have played on my Nintendo DS many a train ride. Had to get those street passes as I commuted. And I do same thing sometimes playing passenger. I sit back occasionally look out at scenery but mostly just vibe to the train sounds and play something low focus required like Animal Crossing. But yeah you aren't alone.

Rarely. When I have a lot of time I use the timetable and try to design a virtual "shift" where I spawn on foot and take over various services, sometimes having to travel between parts of the route as a passenger in between. :)

Not sure what you mean by "complete timetables". You can spawn into a route on foot in timetable mode and ride any train as a passenger but you are not going to be scored as having completed any scenarios etc if that's what you mean.

I usually do it to visit stations after route introduction and training. I ride on an AI train like between every other station, and run between others, at least if services on the route allow it without waiting for a long time (otherwise I just run on foot through all of the route with ts2.dbg.MaxRunSpeed increased).

I also ride on AI trains when testing scenario planner custom scenarios to write down their stopping times and the time of my intended service when it's done by AI (my initial service for testing AI times starts earlier than the intended scenario start, clears the path for all the AI, but stops short of the finish line).

Sometimes I also take a ride on a random AI service that is stopped on a station after spawning on foot, too. Sometimes it happens to go out of the map shortly after departing.

Whilst I like driving trains, sometimes it is just nice to put yourself on a train and ride as a passenger.

Gives me an excuse to continue playing the game while doing housework :D

I ride now and then. When I occasionally go collectables hunting and a train pulls in going my way, it’s nice to hop on for a “free” ride to the next stop. It’s one of those things I don’t use that often but would really miss it if it was taken away. I think a guard mode for services is the next logical step, where we can ride along but also check tickets and operate the doors, which is pretty cool. DTG whetted our appetites with that Glossop scenario, now it’s time to take it to the next level.

Almost never. It's cool that it's there and I can sort of understand the appeal for some people but it has never interested me in the slightest. The reason I play TSW is so I can drive the trains, if I wanted to be a passenger I will go buy a train ticket and be one in real life.

Not on a route that no longer exists or in a period that that was donkey years ago or on traction that no longer runs on such route you can't, or a country you can't currently get to because it's thousands of miles away

Like I said....I kind of understand the appeal of being a passenger and it's cool the feature is there for people who like it; but all the points you make are more relevant to me as a driver rather than sitting on a seat doing nothing other than looking out of a window.

I tried it last night, I enjoyed it, I was looking how to do it this morning but forgot the combinations to get it to work.
I did try it last night on one train, sat for ages nothing happened but the train next to me started to move off, I was gutted I picked the wrong one, I got one in the end.

wow so many cool immersion ideas... what I tend to do lately is do back to back services, like loco first, then wait, and go back as dostos... sometimes I would finish a service, continue in free roam and "hijack" a train :D

yesterday I finished a passenger run and took over a freight train :)

sometimes I do a bit of trolling, like uncoupling some carriages, a loco or so from AI train lmao :D I know, evil :D

I quite like doing this on ECML as you can hear the traction motors better from the passenger area.

I'll often ride as a passenger on WSR, it's great to hear the Diesel engines at work on the inclines, I'll often do what I do in reality, sit on the first table immediately behind the locomotive and look out the window.

Yea don't go around doing that in real life. That's not okay. And as a rail enthusiast you should know better.

I was joking of course but it reminded me of a real life situation years ago when I was a hippie. I had a first class ticket and was going to London from Manchester, the guard came along and without asking said, "Right come on, out!, This is is first class you should be down the other end." I replied in a polite voice asking why he was so aggressive, he said, "You are down there in second class, this is for first class passengers," I said, "I am first class," then showed him my ticket, his expression was priceless, he suddenly changed to calling me sir and he did say he was sorry. I told him he should know by now not to judge a book by it's cover.

I went to drive an engine I had not been on and set everything up to go but I missed something and I got a popup asking I needed to set the such and such to 'ON' but where was it? I was looking all over clicking the mouse but no joy after a while another popup asking if I wanted to hand over the controls, so I said 'Yes.'
I was then free to sit next to the driver, so I was sat there enjoying the ride, I went to the end of the line, then caught a train back.

Just to put in my 2 cents worth, if there's anything I would find less interesting than driving passenger trains, it's riding them in a simulation. That said, I do frequently ride passenger trains when I'm in Europe, especially Italy.

I got bored last night, and couldn't be bothered to drive the train, so rode as a passenger from Bremen to Oldenburg...

Think that's the 3rd time in 6 years that I've rode as a passenger. So yep, very rare thing here. :D

I have a flight sim that lets you sit in the cockpit and the AI is flying the plane, you can go to external view anytime then back in the cockpit, its good sometimes on landing.
So when I saw you can ride as a passenger in this sim I had to try it, I got on one not long ago and a passenger sat in the seat I was sat on, it was weird, if I moved I could see his legs and arms. I went to a different seat quick, before I became him and he became me.

With every single dlc less and less. I hate having blacked windows while a passenger. I can't see the scenary well enough. Some trains like the ICE are unusable. Tgv is meh and like that most train coaches are not really well thought.

Stuck on my VR headset and sat in the MK1 compartment and took a journey from Blackpool to Preston, amazing! My childhood days came flooding back, sticking my head out of the windows. Felt like I was there back in the day

I have rode as a passenger in TSW now and again. It’s handy for travelling between stations on busy routes. It’s a nice thing to do when having a break from driving trains.
