Bit of a curious/little fun train related question i have for people on here.

so the question is if a train turns up and it’s a 156 pulling a 158 which one would you rather sit in ?

I think I would probably go 156, as I like the airflow from the opening windows, and they are the beefiest sounding sprinters from the inside. Though the 158 I had a trip on on the Settle & Carlisle in summer were very pleasant and had the lovely refurbed interior with the relatively lovely new seats.

In all likely hood in the actual situation it would just be the closest door where I could see empty seats though! ;)

I doubt I’d even notice TBH. I usually have headphones on listening to music or an audiobook when I’m travelling so I’m in my own little world. As long as I get a seat, I’ll be happy.

Having never been in a 156, I would choose that.

If I was brave enough, and the train sat in the platform for long enough, I would enter through the 156 doors, walk through the train into the 158, exit from the 158, walk down to the next set of doors on the 158, get back on, and then walk back through the train to the 156.

I want to experience the gangway connection between a 156 and 158 (although now that I think about it, I haven't experienced the gangway connection in a 158 either).

    I’d wait for the next train, hoping it’s a 170! ;)

    I would pick the class 158 as I'm on 156's regularly and haven't been on a 158. :)

    Let's do a Scottish one.

You're going better Edinburgh and Glasgow.
You have a number of options but these two are most convient.

    1) you take a class 380 on the Carstairs line (roughly 50 mins journey) to Edinburgh Waverly.

    2) you take a class 385 on the Falkirk high line to Edinburgh Waverly and is roughly 5 mins faster but you have a 5 minutes walk to queen Street station from central making journey time also 50 mins.

I would prefer a craven 2 car bog-unit, with loads of dead flies on the windows, ripped seats, and suspension which made you think that you were on a rollercoaster, and of course you could look out of the drivers window.....those were the days..

For me it would depend of the unit numbers. I would have the 158 .

Mind you I have had a choice of a 158 or 142 a couple of times. Both times I went onto the 142

I actually have a way of determining how to pick between trains in these situations- if i can, I'll choose the train with the lower top speed.

It's probably just me, but my perception of speed changes from class to class. A 158/156 combo is restricted to 75mph. 75 feels brisk but not especially fast in a 158, but when you're in a 156 at the same speed it feels like you're flying along. Similarly if I was greeted by a 158/170 combo I'd probably pick the 158, even though I think the 170 is an objectively better train. The sensation of speed matters a lot to me.

I'd imagine because you can open the windows on a 156.
