This might be a bit of a hard feature to implement, but it would be cool to have some basic locomotive customization, such as changing the ditch light arrangement, coupling system, safety systems, engine type, etc.

But.. why? And how would you even do that?
A train isn't really like a car.. you can't just swap parts for others. The safety system aspect, well I wouldn't expect to put AWS on a BR 185 or KVB on an ACS-64. Engine type, maybe? I mean how many engines and generators exist for one modern train?

That's one reason why I love X-Plane and the freeware Zibo 737 mod - all you can dream of.

You can reconfigure and customize your plane on the fly, choose between different MCP panels, add Winglets, change certain displays between digital and their analogue predecessors, exchange LED for Halogen landing lights, all at runtime without needing to exit to a menu... it's complete madness what they were able to do here. Instead of bugs, I still discover features I wasn't aware of...

Changing the Master Control Panel via Captain's tablet - the game engine can swap the models on the fly.

The amount of customization this sim offers is incredible.

The AP Class 37 for TSC offers customisation to a great extent also to represent the many changes this loco went through. Even stuff like the window frames....

    Good suggestion.

dunno why, but I imagined some utter madness, like Taurus suddenly being an 8axle behemoth or 10axle Vectron XDDD

Baldwin Centipede built in 1945 had a total of 12 axels an only produced 3,000Hp could pull 107 cars in theory but only ever pulled a total of 80 cars. 1960 all units were scrapped.
