I have recently read through a suggestion thread regarding the concept of adding in delays / incidents to service mode to improve the immersion and realism - it’s something I would love to see.

However it got me thinking that given the whole range of possible scenarios, and actually integrating them into the game on a random basis but at a realistic and appropriate rate of occurrence could be quite difficult.

I think a great introduction into adding the dynamic simulation aspect into the game would be permanent way workers (Trackside Workers)

When the game loads up a service, it will randomly (at a realistic rate) add engineers wearing high visibility clothing along the route. Sometimes you may experience none, sometimes you will experience them at one location, or even in some circumstances you may see them at multiple locations, depending on the route. Upon sighting the high visibility clothing, the player will sound their horn as per real life guidelines.

(Bonus points if the engineers could be animated to raise their hand to acknowledge the train when horn is sounded)

I know this is quite a basic and simple suggestion, but I think it would be a great first step into adding dynamic events to improve the immersion.

Good suggestion would bring some much needed extra life to routes.

This is a superb suggestion which adds a whole extra dimension to the immersion. From the outside, it seems a fairly simple thing to include.

only recommended for routes with two tracks I would say... since you dont have rail replacement bus services available in the game

Engineers on the trackside is not a service cancelling situation. It happens quite often where workers carry out inspections of many aspects such as track, joints, cables, boundary fences, almost anything that could potentially affect the railway if not kept in check, while trains are still able to run. This can happen on any route, whether there is a single track or many tracks.

As mentioned in my original post, when a driver sees the high visibility clothing, they will sound their horn to alert the workers of their presence, and the workers will acknowledge by raising their hands and moving to a point of safety. Once the train has passed, they continue with their work until the next train passes, and repeats the process until they are cleared from the line

    Not necessarily.

In the UK trains often remain at line speed, and the workers remain vigilant. Trains would only be stopped if the engineers noticed a problem which is a safety concern.

I recommend watching a video on YouTube called “Your Life on the line”

It’s an old British Rail training video and it gives a few demonstrations and examples
