I have a question. Can the game work if all the files are put in HDD (D:) instead of C:? I'm thinking of transfering them over to D: because I am starting to lack storage capacity in C: The game files are in C: by default when you install it.

    Yeah, no problem.
You can either move the whole of Steam over, or leave Steam where it is and have a library on another drive.
Personally I'd move Steam, far better to leave the system drive for the system, and it does reduce the chances of UAC related problems.

And if you choose to reinstall Steam, you can avoid UAC issues by installing it to the root, e.g. C:\Steam or D:\Steam instead of having it in the supervised "Program Files (x86)" folder.

In your case, it seems you'd be best off with just creating a D:\SteamLibrary folder by using Steam's built in storage manager.

I play it on a portable drive D and steam simply transfered all the files across for both TSW and TSD. Both games run well as expected.

You can basically run it from wherever you want. (As long as it's not cloud storage like OneDrive, saw some issue reports for Euro Truck Simulator 2, the logfile revealed the guy had the full game installed to OneDrive :) )

How do you move Steam as a whole to D:?

Not really but they do take up a lot of storage space. I have 4-5 Steam games which I paid for, I have played all of them but only 2 are installed right now precisely due to a lack of storage capacity.

Was it automatic or you had to manually do it? How did you do it?

That can only be done by uninstalling it. But you don't need to, you can move your games to another drive using Steam, leaving only the base Steam installation on your system drive.

Copy Steam.exe to wherever you want Steam to be, double click it and it'll build a new copy of Steam and your games. Makes sense to do this overnight!
Once it's done you can just copy over any reskins etc from your C: installation, and once you're happy that the new install is as it should be just delete the one on C:

Is there a video tutorial showing this? I am more of a visual person and I want to make sure I do this right.

Thank you! I didn't know I have to uninstall the game and then reinstall it again, that's a bit of a letdown.

    NO YOU DONT!!!!!!

Once again, decide where you want Steam to live---D:/Steam, D:/Games/Steam, D:/SomebodySaidItShouldGoHere/Steam are all valid but it needs to be where YOU are happiest. What does the 'P' in PC stand for?

Create whatever folder structure you like, as long as it has a folder called Steam. In that Steam folder you copy the Steam.exe file you have in C:
Double click that file and let Steam rebuild itself and your games.
You do not lose your existing installation until you decide it's no longer needed...back to the 'P' in PC.....

Once you have a new installation you just copy over any customised and 3rd party folders and files.

Before you start Back Up your Railworks Folder to an external drive.
You can later copy the contents to the new location.

No need to backup Peter, the old installation becomes the backup.

Various people, strangely enough, will disagree with you.
I'm not sure if you are disagreeing with me because that is what you like to do or what?

If the OP Does not back up his Railworks folder and an error in the process occurs then he might lose all his third party DLC and mods.
But you will be able to explain how he should recover any lost items

Any error would only affect the new installation, but yes I'll withdraw the "no need to backup" comment and instead state "no need to make a new backup, the existing one you'll have will do"

Yeah see double clicking Steam.exe to let Steam rebuild itself did not work, for some reason. But if anything it's good to know I do not have to uninstall and reinstall the game because with everything that I have that would literally be a 10 hour process.

All you have to do is open steam, right click on the game in the library, I think it's under properties to move the installation to another drive. You may be prompted to created a steam library on the drive you wish to move it to.

That's just creating a new library, not moving the whole of Steam.

Into D: as a whole, not into a specific folder though I guess I could create a folder called Program Files x86 maybe because that's where my Steam folder with Train Simulator files is located in C:

    Gary clearly stated..
It seems you haven't followed Gary's instruction, try it with a folder named "Steam" in your D:\ directory, see if that works.

Ok, I have created a folder and will do the whole transfer overnight (it's around 800 GB).

    Huh?

Create a folder called Steam in your desired location and just copy the Steam.exe to it and then double click it.

That didn't work so I'm copy-pasting all the files from C: to D: overnight instead. Hopefully it will work.

I'll be honest I've never tried the method Gary suggested so couldn't confirm whether it actually works or not, I've always made a direct copy or move just like you're doing, shame cos it would've been good to know if there was a simpler/quicker way, maybe one day I'll try it myself should the need ever arise.

Well I still have to find out if "my method" even works but yeah I got tired of having to delete certain assets or routes because of a lack of storage capacity in C:

It will work copying just the complete Railworks folder over I've done it myself countless times, the only thing you need to do is create a desktop shortcut of the Railworks64.exe to launch TSC from because if you launch TSC from Steam then it will launch the one from the Steam directory.

Wouldn't moving my entire Steam from C: to D: also by default move the Steam directory as well? Because otherwise you're basically saying that if I move Steam from C: to D:, delete it from C: and then do nothing else, I will not be able to launch the game from Steam.

All you need to do is create a new Steam Library and press one button (Manage>Installed Files) to move the game. Then reinstall your mods / 3rd party addons again.

I would rather avoid reinstalling mods and 3rd party addons if I can, it would take too long and would be too complicated. I have over 800 GB of content.

In that case there is a way.

First you have to create a library folder using Steam. Then close Steam and move your installation manually. Finally, edit the Steam .vdf files to point to the new Train Simulator (24010) location and move the appmanifest_24010.acf over to D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps.

This way you can avoid Steam verifying and redownloading files during the transfer. Give me some time to give you details (I've done that years ago).

You can also JUST move the RailWorks folder to D: yourself. The game will still work, make a shortcut to RailWorks64.exe to launch it (Launching it through Steam directly will not work).

Be aware that you have to apply updates manually then, as Steam will still use the C: folder that way. Requires good knowledge of file management and using SteamDB.info.

I'm not taking any responsibility in case anything goes wrong on your end :)

My problem is that it seems I have to uninstall Steam and then somehow reinstall it to D: for that to work, Steam doesn't allow me to bypass C: because I can't delete some of the Steam files manually unless I unistall Steam altogether.

The game has been successfully transfered to D: We can therefore probably close this topic.

Yeah, but that's rather axiomatic...just how did you perform it----a full installation through steam, or by using the steam.exe ploy, or by just creating a new library?

Just by creating a new library, it took a full day but it worked.
