This is a poll to see what mode people prefer driving in. What do you prefer? Results posted after close of poll. You only have one preferred choice.
I've ticked Career, as it is the only mode that lets you finish scenarios even if being late (Scoring off). Standard scenarios with too tight timetables can't be finished, so Career without Scoring offers the most relaxed gameplay, that lets you decide whether to speed like an idiot or well, being a bit late, which is nothing bad. (In Germany, you're officially late if exceeding 30 minutes. DB changed the rules so their statistics look better.) I'm using Freeroam for US routes mostly or to check new routes. QD also offers a lot of random gameplay, and is the most underrated driving mode. Standard is ok as long as there's no timed arrivals.
All of them? Career & Standard are good to introduce a route, tell some story, while motivating to learn proper driving. Free Roam gives a lot of freedom to play an extended session, experience a whole day. I use QD sometimes but I prefer custom weather / consists, thus not much.
I used to to Quick Drive only but lately love doing scenarios because it gives the whole experience a lot more depth. I did not select anything in the polll though since I have no clue those scenarios are Standard or Career. How can one tell ? . . some time later, turns out I use Career , no idea what the difference with Standard is though, will check the user manual. I do have scoring dwitched off. BTW: Too bad the results are kept secret for non voters, I wonder why that is. Is a good method to get unreliable results ;-)
I play some Standard Scenarios as the makers of those can place interesting AI trains. Sometimes I will change the loco in the default Scenario to one I like to drive. Most times I like Quick Drive or Real Drive scenarios You can decide on the length and finish it where you want. Peter
Spot on. So much can be done with quick drives, that are totally unique to them. Random signalling, random parked stock, random AI trains. Random Time, weather and season.
What would be nice is a Run 8 type of free roam, whereby you can spawn in random AI consists at certain points in a route (with destination) and then just throw in a player train to weave in between the AI (with Run 8 Otto type destination selection for player train). Don't think we can do this with free roam in TSC even if we spawn AI from portals (player train is unable to change switches when AI is running in free roam).
Currently S > C > Q > F, roughly 4:3:2:1. Career uses scoring - you start somewhere, then gain bonuses and suffer penalties. Standard is more binary - if you are late, the scenario fails. However, there are no penalties for losing grip or speeding. (So, in context of a recent NEC QQ, in a standard if you pass a surprise signal, no problem, you are speeding, slow down.) Yes, the best workaround is to assign objectives to the player train. Effectively a timetabled scenario with popups. Simply because a (player) train without objectives is the lowest priority possible. You can change switches once the last AI passed. Timetabled scenarios are pretty fun in this sense, you work once and then you have several options to play.
Quickdrive for me. I build my own so I can have have sessions that are different each time with a wide range of static and AI consists. The only trouble is that I find routing between goods yards much more problematic as quite a few routes keep the number of manual points to a minimum.
I hate anything with a timer. I want to relax and enjoy the route, not be tensed up watching the timer all the time. My preference is mostly Standard scenarios without a timer. I use Quick Drive for my own built 120 mile fictional route
Actually more reliable. I am looking for your decision and not have it influenced by others. I personally use TS_Tools to convert Career scenarios to Standard and turn off scoring. This give me the ability to run a more realistic schedule. Therefore Standard is my preference. Followed by Free Roam. I also will clone a standard and convert to Free Roam this keeps installed rolling stock and assets in place while driving at my pace where ever I wish to go.
Much agreed; I play both Career w/ no scoring and Standard and I like both but prefer Career w/ no scoring as it feels more relaxed and I can drive realistically without having to worry and stress about completely failing even if I am just one minute late which may sometimes simply be caused by quick and stupid mistakes which can cause lots of frustration with Standard scenario playthroughs.
Being new to TS I haven’t used Free Roam, not sure how it works yet but I will look into it. For the poll, mostly Standard I would say for me so far
Many people will just vote to see the results. Even if they have no preference. In your case you probably picked a preference but that is not what you play most or actually prefer at all. Still gives a nice impression though. It also proofs what the whiners were all up in arms about many years ago . . . . Quick Drive is terrible, game killer that no one will like
Thank you for your replies and comments. I personally like Free Roam firstly and Standard secondly. I open editor and put together a consist and drive doing drops and picks along the route. Since I convert all the Career scenarios to Standard I swap out supplied with better rolling stock and add Krellnut's wagons sounds and AP weather to all routes.
Selective quoting When you read the whole paragraph you will know what was meant. That was how the new feature (quick drive) was welcomed by many hard core players. And now so many years later is seems to be one of the most popular ways of enjoying the game I did not critisize any persons way of playing for one second.
Standard. I'm not arguing. It's just the best IMO, and it's my game, on my machine, and I'm the one using it. Standard.
