It’s time to hit the main line with the thundering diesel power! The DB BR 218, developed by TSG, is coming June 25th!

Read our DB DR 218 article here!

The current German rail network is defined largely by long, high-speed electrified lines, hosting a range of powerful electric locomotives. But that wasn’t always the case! A fleet of powerful, noisy diesel-hydraulic locomotives once roamed the tracks, with the DB BR 218 taking up both passenger and freight duties on both main and branch lines.

    The Locomotive

    upload_2024-6-18_13-52-15.jpeg

Prototypes of the 218 were first built in the late 1960s, before the main run of locos entered service between 1971 and 1979. They became staple locomotives running across West Germany due to their impressive power output of up to 2800hp and a top speed on 140 km/h.

Like many German locomotives, their use was extended over many decades through until the early 2000s, with many examples still being active today. As time progressed, they slowly began to be replaced by more efficient DMUs and electric traction as more parts of the network switched to electrified lines.

    upload_2024-6-18_13-52-24.jpeg

Many remain in use for a variety of services and in recent decades have been allocated to push-pull operations on certain lines, long distance main line passenger trains and hauling out of service ICE units, as well as occasional heritage rail tours.

    upload_2024-6-18_13-52-28.jpeg

In-game, the DB BR 218 is recreated with a detailed cab and exterior, allowing players to experience the thrill of main line diesel traction for the first time in Train Sim World. The audio has been sourced from a real-world driver of this type of locomotive, with the exterior also being modelled based on detailed imagery from the real thing.

As far as operating the locomotive is concerned, developer Maik from TSG explains:

This loco, like most other older German classes, needs some patience and foresight when driving it. Its usage is similar to the tap changer locos (such as the BR 110), where you need to throttle down before you can start braking. The time needed for going from notch 15 to 2 and then 0 is about 25 seconds.

It's also important to use the correct transmission gear for the type of train you run.
    • Gear 2 (Fast Gear) gives you about 160 kN max force at slow speeds, ramping down quickly when getting up to speed. So this is only meant for light trains running with up to 140 kph max speed.
    • Gear 1 (Slow Gear) gains up to 220 kN of force and is best used with heavy freight trains with a max speed of 100 kph.
    • The hydrodynamic brake is not that powerful, with only 90 kN max braking force, but can be quite useful for maintaining speed down gradients. It's coupled to the train brake as usual and uses brake blending with the pneumatic brake.
Cold-starting the locomotive also requires patience and can take some time. Otherwise it's a fun and easy-to-drive locomotive.

    The Routes, Services and Gameplay

    Hauptstrecke Hamburg - Lübeck

The primary route for the DB BR 218 loco Add-on is the Train Sim World Compatible Hauptstrecke Hamburg – Lübeck route Add-on. Here players can operate the 218 in timetable mode across 29 services:
    • 15x RE83 services that run from Hamburg to Lübeck (Kiel) hauling n-Wagens
    • 1x RE83 service (11446) from Hamburg to Lübeck hauling a BR 112 and Dostos
    • 2x RE85 services that run from Hamburg to Lübeck (Puttgarden) hauling Dostos
    • 11x freight services that run between Rothenburgsort and Lübeck using included freight
The 218 leads on northbound services. In addition, further services include:
    • 16x RE83 services that run from Lübeck to Hamburg using the n-Wagen cab car
    • 1x RE83 service (11447) that runs from Lübeck to Hamburg using the Dosto Cab Car, with a 112 in the formation
    • 1x RE83 Depot service
    • 2x RE85 services that run from Lübeck to Hamburg using the Dosto cab car
With the DB BR 218 and all other layers, Hamburg - Lübeck now has 271 playable services.

In addition to the BR 218 layer, with this timetable update; owners of Niddertalbahn will find that the DB BR 628 in its modern red livery also now appears as AI at Lübeck Hbf – the 218 is not required for this additional layer.

4x Scenarios are also included for this route covering both passenger and freight operations.

    Maintalbahn

Players with both Hamburg - Lübeck and Maintalbahn will be able to operate additional services on the more recent Maintalbahn route Add-on. This is to represent a period between December 2017 and 2018 where Westfrankenbahn required additional traction to replace a DB BR 642 that had been allocated elsewhere. A DB BR 218 was provided.

There are a total of 19x RB88 and a handful of shunting depot services. The 218 operated RB services instead of RE, as in reality, RE services on the Maintalbahn operate on a request-stop basis, but the Dostos have no ability to request a stop and the 218 driver wouldn’t be able to see it, whereas the RB services are all stoppers anyway.

Players can also enjoy an ‘express’ style service in Free Roam to recreate the occasion of a 218 rail tour which arrived on the line in 2019. These locomotives (albeit in liveries not represented in-game) also ran along lines in Linke Rheinstrecke and Niddertalbahn which players can choose to represent in Free Roam.

Train Sim World 4: DB BR 218 loco Add-on will be available from 25th June for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £14.99/€17.99/$17.99

You can join the Railfan TV team on Twitch and YouTube for a launch day stream of the loco Add-on in action at 18:00 UTC / 19:00 BST on Tuesday 25th June.

No tod4 for HBL? Not a lot of layers for this one either…

I hope DTG don’t assume we don’t like loco DLC’s when stuff like this doesn’t sell, there’s just not a lot going on here

I'm more interested in trains than routes.
I don't have the Maintalbahn (and will never buy one, because it's awful) and I don't use the ToD3 routes anymore.
    Perfect for Free Roam.

Sooooooooooooo looking forward for the loco and a release of TSG (which implies: hitting F5 until it's available to buy - instantly buy it)

sounds awesome, but how do you set up stuff when in formation with 112? neither has MU switch

Looking forward to getting it, but I have 2 questions about the price

Is there a reason it is £14.99 rather than £11.99 - will this be the standard price of loco DLC's from now on?

Also, is there no preorder discount?

No TOD4 for Hamburg is a real bummer- if it didn't come with this DLC, it probably never will. I have no interest in going back to the awful old lighting at this point. When you look at the improvements coming to Cathcart with the 380 DLC, it doesn't seem like comparable value.

I was very excited about this initially, but, honestly, a handful of services on Maintalbahn isn't much to write home about. I wonder if there was supposed to be a route out by now that would have been a better fit and something happened that messed up the scheduling?

And, including "free roam ideas" as part of the marketing pitch is a bit rich, isn't it? Like, you couldn't have just included that railtour service?

Definitely waiting until this is out in the wild for a bit before deciding- TSG's work has all been excellent, but just too many odd choices on this one for an immediate purchase.

Really looking forward to the 218, but I must admit I am a little dissapointed that Hamburg-Lübeck isn’t getting TOD4.

Im buying it day 1 full price to support TSG and maik golz, instead ill give the 380 a skip until sale because DTG didnt bother to implement the new lighting here with hamburg lübeck.

I would even buy the 420 with no layers at all to support tsg, this project is stuck because DTG doesnt care about münchen - augsburg.

I really don't understand this DLC. Why would I want to drive Hauptstrecke Hamburg again? There is no incentive to with this DLC. It's not the best of German routes and it's not updated.

I hope you don't need TSW4 to buy this download as this could be interesting for those on older versions of TSW.

And unfortunately the (important for me) sound - once again - only sounds mediocre and poorly mixed, even if it comes from real recordings. It's a shame, they could have delivered a "cool thing" with the 218 in particular.

I would have preferred not to have anything to complain about, but there is always something at TSW that catches the eye or ear.

Very excited for the 218 and the fact that Hamburg-Lubeck - one of my favourite routes - gets more services and variety is even better; I hope many more older routes get DLC like this whether from DTG or third-party as it brings so much needed freshness and vital new long-term gameplay.

However, I do agree with others that it seems a hugely wasted opportunity for the route to not get a TOD 4 overhaul, especially when Cathcart and its new loco DLC will have it (where's the consistency?). Fortunately, I still play older non-TOD 4 routes as much as the newer ones, so I'm not majorly bothered overall although I still would like to see all older routes become TOD 4 obviously though.

Now this is great news. Lubeck always felt like it was emptier than it should be, so I'm happy to see this. Again, this is what should be done more for TSW overall - add more newer DLC to older routes to make them busier etc.

I will definitely buy it for Xbox one but wait for a reasonable discount for adding it to my steam collection.

The 112 (which would normally haul the train itself on its own) is just dead weight in that formation. If I remember correctly, this was done like that to get the 218s to and from the workshop in Lübeck without needing an extra path for a light loco move.

TSG made many very good german Tsw dlcs possible with their 2nd party content for DTG. (Ice1, br101, br111, br110, br103..).

To me it looks like they leave maik golz entirely in the rain with no lighting upgrade for hamburg. Same goes for münchen.

This clearly would be an advertisement booster...but no. My answer will arrive with skipping even more dovetail content.

Besides I'm disappointed for not getting a ToD 4 Update for HBK, I'm really looking forward to this release :) Hope it will be the same quality as the other DLC's from TSG. Very happy to spend money here.

I also expect this loco will have a bright future with some upcoming german routes.

I've been looking forward to this so an instant buy from me. Shame about the layers though, One really poor route that I've barely touched it was so bad and one old route with TOD3. Still I guess the modders will save us with some decent timetables on other routes and maybe there's a decent German route for it in TSW5 ;-)

Impressive and it needs more routes to run on like Vorarlberg EC München Hbf Zürich Hbf by running Lindau-Lustenau section. If 1990s paint Niddertalbahn Bad Vilbel Glauburg-Stockheim.

Like what I have seen, so far. The TOD3 was discussed a long time ago and already confirmed by DTG that this is not planned, hence the feeling of disapointment has already passed quite some time ago:D

I do have a question, though. I have noticed this already in the past: why dont we have moving and animated cables and "hanging stuff" in cabs?! UE clearly can handle this and also TSW shows this in many ways. The cable of the radio is pretty much in your face on the 218 and it is somehow awkward looking at it not moving while the loco is moving...

We absolutely thought about that. But it's not possible. Alembic is not working well in TSW because of the origin shifting. The cable components look bad with such a cable that needs transparency. Cable components only work with a hose type mesh, or would look bad, especially when so close to the player.

Will the services on HBK only be available on timetable mode or will the DLC have it's own "journey" chapter where services and scenarios are mixed up?

I'll say it again, I was looking forward a lot to 218, but mainly to drive freights with it. Offering just a handful of services on a route that is not interesting for freight at all (almost no stations along the way, and the Rothenburgsort branch that was never really finished object- and signalling-wise) move this certainly into "wait for discount", or at least "wait for future routes that can actually offer gameplay for the DLC" category. :/

Too "iconic" not to own it immediately...
Then it seems to me that TSW is equipped with tools to make every wish come true.
As for me, I would pay a lot of money to have one DLC like this per month ( BR 151,140,181.2,294 etc.).

Tbh, I would rather have DTG giving me the opportunity to actually chose the state of freight Waggons on the consist editor (loaded/unloaded), as freight on HBK is very limited anyway, as you can’t manipulate the brake settings. I don’t mind the few services, as I will rather drive this on other routes in free roam.

I think this cannot be missed on day one. Unfortunately I am not home until the 28th late:( (so it will only be a day 4 buy for me…)

    Can we be sure, though?

I know i'll pick this up eventually, and i'm sure it will be modeled well, but the lack of gameplay and layers is a worry for me.

I enjoy a bit of free-roam, but also really enjoy being able to see the locos i buy as AI trafffic, which will be sadly missing for me as i'm not going back to the awful old lighting on Hamburg-Lubeck.

It's really the biggest sticking point for me and i just can't wrap my mind around it.

I just wish we could get some official word or explanation on why TOD4 is so inconsistently applied:

UP Heritage Collection for Sherman Hill- TOD 4 upgrade

NS Heritage Collection for Horseshoe Curve- no upgrade

Class 380 DLC for Cathcart- TOD4 upgrade

BR218 DLC for Hamburg- no upgrade

    Make it make sense DTG

Simple: when DTG release a loco DLC, they give its base route a TOD4 upgrade. When a third party releases a loco DLC, DTG doesn't.

They never ran the service beyond Lindau - that was an SBB Re 4/4 II, which I've been calling for for years, it would make Luzern - Sursee worth playing and could slot into any SBB route.

This looks good, and should add life to a fairly dull route in Hamburg - Lubeck. Needs to appear on more routes though - I presume it'll be a mainstay of future German addons, but back-layering would be good too.

That's a pretty poor show by DTG, then.

From my perspective as a customer, there's no difference between 1st and 3rd party- it's official paid DLC and is all published by the same company. It should all be up to the same quality standard IMO.

Not to mention it does a disservice to the reputations of all involved.

If new-ish player (started with TSW3 or later) buys the 218 and Hamburg to run it on, then leaves a negative review on both because the lighting looks like garbage compared to newer releases, how is that good for anyone?

It's a moot point now anyway, they've made their choices.

DTG’s pricing model is getting silly, there is no consistency whatsoever now! £9.99 is what is should have been! Not a day one purchase for me unfortunately.

There is no Dosto with an specific diesel desk. You can control the 218 from the regular 766/767 cab.
