I'm thinking of buying a gaming laptop, specifically the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 9 Intel (16") with RTX™ 4070. This model is well-regarded for its excellent performance and features: would this be a good choice
Personally I would go for a desktop as you are a bit limited with a laptop as regards future upgrades to the hardware.
I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread @ice#6850 But i am thinking of buying one of these two bundles and would like the opinions of someone more in the know with up to date systems. £830 is my limit so no i9 and i am leaning towards the Intel as i have only ever had one AMD system back in 1995. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/3xs...-b760-a-gaming-wifi-32gb-ddr5-corsair-h100i-r https://www.scan.co.uk/products/3xs...50-a-gaming-wifi-32gb-ddr5-corsair-h100i-elit
The big advantage of a gaming laptop is, of course, that you can tote it around on trains, planes and automobiles, play TSW in a hotel room, on the beach or a campground, anywhere with a charging station nearby. They do tend to be pretty hefty though so you might need shoulder surgery eventually. The disadvantage is that they often cost more than a desktop. And, remember, an RTX 4080 in a laptop is smaller and less powerful than the same GPU in a desktop. And you won't like that burning sensation if you actually use it on your lap.
The laptop specified above will do fine. It’s way above the spec if mine (i5 11th Gen 16gb Ram and a 3060) and mine plays TSW decently when I‘m travelling. A desktop is always going to be better as Vern said, but if you need to be mobile then it looks like a decent option. As said above, they gaming laptops get extremely hot, and are very uncomfortable to actually use on your lap. Also for a good gaming experience you’re going to need to plug it in otherwise the battery is not going to last long at all when gaming.
lol This is why I prefer handheld consoles like the Steam Deck or something like the One X player. One X is very competent and tiny.
Yeah I didn't know that laptop GPUs were less powerful than PC GPUs. Luckily, I needed the portability, and TSW's performance is good (and certainly better than my previous laptop!).
I have a Dell G3(3579) that I use almost exclusively for train simulation. I've been very happy with it for many years. It has no issues running TSC, TSW, PC Unreal Editor and it is quite easy to obtain parts to service or upgrade if you have basic DIY skills. If I had to use a desktop system for train simulation I simply would never play. Everyone has different priorities, but this solution works great for me.
If you want to play TSW seriously, make sure to have enough disk space. For most laptops that's the reason they are not so good for TSW. You probably want at least 2Tb. 4Tb is better.
From someone who is currently running an AMD build (R5 3600 + RX 6700xt), I would go with the Ryzen 7 7700x. However I would make some changes and buy it individually. First thing is that you absolutely shouldn't need a fancy board like this. Just get a cheap B650 motherboard from a reputable manufacturer and save a bit of money. Second is that I would go with an Arctic Liquid Freezer III instead of the Corsair H100i (size based on what your case can fit but 280mm is better than 360mm). Arctic does use thicker radiators than other manufacturers (which gives them better value) so you will likely need to retro-fit it with slim fans if going for a top mount but that's easy to do.
I bought this system two months ago and it is absolutely brilliant as a gaming laptop. Way better than my old Razer Blade... I can only recommend it for TSW
Did you get the Lenovo you originally mentioned? How do you like it? Your experience using it with TSW? Congrats on the new laptop!
No I ended up getting the 4080 version instead tsw now runs 75 fps where on my old pc it ran at 18 fps
I’ve always played TSW and TSC on a gaming laptop without any problems At all, they are the future of gaming. Especially for people that don’t have a spare room to be taken over by all the kit a desktop requires. I also play the latest games and performance is always smooth.
