Era Correctness: Is It More Important Than Gameplay?

Discussion in 'TSW General Discussion' started by RobertSchulz, Jun 24, 2024.

  1. Yes, era correctness is important to me. Better have less locos or mileage if the era is spot on.

  2. No, I would like to have more gameplay elements, I don't care that much about era correctness.

  3. I prefer era correctness but if it means less gameplay, I'm okay when its not 100% era correct.

  4. Depends on the route and gameplay element. (Please specify in the comments)

The word pretend is doing a lot of heavy lifting! A 1950's ex GWR branch line with no Great Western engines on it is definitely pushing the boundaries of realism.

Still there are a lot of ways in the sim where people can run what they want, I would hope that means that timetable mode can be left to be as realistic as possible.

But that's down to DTG and developers not building any. The game version of WSR was built as though a Diesel Gala was being held, it's undergone several FREE updates since then and now has a FREE Steam Gala using the available assets. I've no doubt if a GWR Steam engine was created it would be layered onto WSR straight away.

I understand that. It was the point being made that you could pretend that the WSR was set in the 1950's, which you could but not with any realism.

It would be a very large stretch of the imagination! Especially with there being no tank engines in game. It often takes a bit of imagination to feel immersed in the period steam routes, though that of course is a separate topic all together!

A compromise yes, but I think not one DTG sees as working, it takes already limited development time for new content away from those looking for realism, a dlc whats too unrealistic is essentially a complete right off to those seeking realism

Diesel legends was exactly that, but i think DTG don’t want to do that again.

I personally bought it for use of the 52 what didn’t involve 25mph speed limits, apart from that I don’t think it should be repeated without a scenery/route look pack sort of thing.

Yes, I specifically said "people can pretend" because they don't have it in game... he "pretended" that he didn't read what I said. Because they aren't getting an old train on a route already made in modern, so it's the only way they'll get any older traction on a new route.

I'm still confused. The West Somerset Railway was an old branchline built in 1870s, closed a hundred years later and reopened as a preserved railway, that's what we've got on TSW.

There shouldn’t be any confusion. Someone said that whilst you are driving old trains on the modern heritage railway you can, if you so wish, pretend you are driving in the olden days when those trains may have been in use. Otherwise you would be driving preserved steam locos and carriages etc on the present day heritage route, which is what is actually depicted. You can choose where your imagination and immersion takes you. If there aren’t the correct trains or the setting is too modern then some people will find it harder to pretend it is in the bygone era.
