Yeah this was a pleasant surprise, in between mostly modern routes. Looking forward to this one :)

isn't that the "loco" that's an EMU, or did I miss an actual electric loco?

I’m more excited about this than anything else launched today. Fantastic route and an excellent loco choice, that will be a bit more of a challenge to drive than the usual EMUs.

BPO were a very special release, but this will be a totally different level. The highlight with no competition in sight.

Finally, yes! With the new route hopping i wish JT update the blackpool branches timetable with the cl.87, so the player is able to switch between the routes.

With the loco-hauled MK3s as well, as they should be, I stopped paying attention after they mentioned this and the GWE remaster.

oh yea will their be DVTs with this one? or will there wont? As in the MK3 DVTs? I guess there wont be considering the time that the route takes place and mk3 DVTs aren't built yet.

The 90s were going to be called 87/2s at one stage. The 87s are basically the forerunners of the 90s.

    Like what a German 111 is to a 110.

The 87 would run around the train I think, it’s 87s running both ways

I think it depends on the period, the DVTs came in with the InterCity Swallow livery, so this route may predate them.
I’m fairly sure 87s have tap changers like 86s do, so they’re slightly different to 90s which I’m sure just have a power handle. I guess it adds to the challenge of taking them over Shap Summit!

All 87s except 87101 were tap changers yeah, and I don't imagine we will get 87101 with this (would be cool tho ;))

Totally agree, I’m dying for a route set early in privatisation, but the chances of the Virgin branding getting approved is negative zero.

Normally don’t plonk anachronistic trains into a route on Free Roam but don’t think Preston to Carlisle has changed a great deal since the 80s, so looking forward to giving the Pendo a bash on this one.

Different driving experience though - the 87/0s had tap changers, while the 90s and 87101 had a Thyristor control, so a more straightforward accelerator.

Interested to see if JT manage to implement neutral sections with working APC magnets on this route with the 87 reacting to them accordingly. East Coast and Cross City don't have them, or at least the traction doesn't respond to them.

I know I could wait a few hours, but I'm excited. My expectation is that like Blackpool branches it will be set in the early sectorisation era, so hopefully we'll see the loco and coaches in IC executive as well as BR blue.

I'm expecting similar layering to Blackpool, with the Pacer as well (possibly included), and hopefully the 87 will layer back into that route, making Preston more realistic.

Other possibilities are the technically different 87101, and the experimental livery for 87006.

    upload_2024-8-21_9-57-54.jpeg

I doubt we'll get a second piece of new rolling stock in that case - and with good layering it wouldn't need it - but as we got some 47 repaints with Blackpool, maybe some repainted older stock here. A 20, 31, or 37 would be the obvious choices.

Will it be Era based, like 1980s or modern?

To be fair, Frankfurt - Fulda and Mannheim - Kaiserslautern caught most of my attention since both are close to me, but besides that, this is easily what I was most excited to finally have confirmed. To me, there's nothing better than old-school electric locos. Really looking forward to this!

Actually will be interesting to see what they put on the branches, namely Windermere and Morecambe. Probably the 142 as the Met Cams were fairly rare in the area, saw one on the Windermere branch in Easter 1977 which was a 3 car set in West Yorkshire livery presumably borrowed to cover Bank Holiday loadings. Otherwise generally a 2 car Class 108 or Class 105 Cravens unit, though if as late as 1989 the latter probably gone by then.

A 101 would be my guess. Maybe in that reversed livery they wore for a while.

Even though we are basically getting the same amount of stations as ECML, i can’t wait to attempt to climb to Shap Summit in a Jubilee (using free roam, i think)

Totally psyched for this one. Blackpool is one of my favorite routes and objectively the best-made one I've played. And I usually want more American routes.

So this is the first ever UK electric locomotive which is an old and noisy box ! How excited I am, I always preferred the good old DC sound from the motors and the complex driving. I’m really excited about it and I’m sure JT will amaze use !

Judging by the picture, it’ll have the Brecknell-Willis pantograph, we won’t have the ones with the cross arm pantographs I guess but, were all 87s delivered with two types of pantograph, or one and later retrofitted with a different one ?

    It was a Class 86 I think. The 87s have 2 windows whilst the 86s have 3

Why though? Loco dlc comes around like a once a year Christmas present, u wanna waste that with a train with limited use, barely any service possibilities and no good way to even source sounds? Especially when this route could easily take an 86 or any other period electric, or many other things that offer way more variety and would be less of a pain to make. What’s the point? Besides it’s a terrible unit, there’s a reason the project was called a failure

This is awesome and the layering will help "complete" Blackpool.

So... a tea from the Traveller's Fare in a Maxpax cup with some egg mayonnaise sandwiches + tomato sauce flavour Tudor crisps + Club biscuits in a lunchbox, and ready for bit of spotting at Preston!

APT gets my vote. There’s tons of loco DLC you could easily categorise the same way you have. Lately they’ve been reskins more than anything.

It was never the most widely used rolling stock no, but even today it’s a headturner & something quite special.

Its quality in the real world has no bearing on what it would be virtually recreated, look at the Pacer, literally one of Britains most hated trains, yet it’s a star in TSW.

Preston to Carlisle in the 80’s is literally the perfect backdrop for an APT.

That is where my mind went. :) No promises since we'll have to research what can be done first, but I'd certainly love that.
