TSW VR did look good actually. It actually looked like a game instead of simulator. A shame it's in VR as I will probably never play it. There is some stuff in there that looks like you can build a nice arcade train game with. Also was looking at how it performs. It looked to run very smooth. How is that possible? Why can't TSW 5 run like that?
TSW VR was built from scratch for the Meta Quest 2 and 3 using Unreal Engine 5. It's a completely different game that was designed to run on hardware not far off your average mobile phone.
Instead of building an entirely new game to run on ‘hardware not far off your average mobile phone’ why not make it a key feature of the main game?
A game built from the ground up to be a VR game will always be a better experience than one with the feature tacked on. Furthermore, this is our first foray into VR games, so one step at a time. The skills and experience gained with this game could benefit future simulation titles.
It's much easier testing new technology on a build done from scratch, as opposed to integrating it into an existing game with 100 DLC prone to get broken. void main() { // TSW VR v0.1a }
Just wish it wasn't a Quest exclusive, would look much better if they did a Steam VR port at some point.
Hi DTG Matt I read your comments in the other VR thread but don't want to hijack that topic with an Apple plug What about Vision Pro? The cheaper version will be coming in 2025/2026. If you could line up a version of TSW VR with that release that would give the TSW franchise huge exposure. Not saying it will be a long lasting hit and huge sales on the Vision pro but I guess the exposure is worthwhile having a look at it. It seems to run on mobile hardware so ..... there is a huge unexplored market for mobile TSW games ....
No plans for AVP at this point, and TSWVR will have proved or disproved the opportunity for VR by then - so if there is a second iteration it can be looked at. Matt.
because the growth is the biggest on Quest. Your need to pick a platform so it makes sense. VR is still not a mature product. Look for example at AI that surpassed VR in user adoption with big margins
Because Quest utterly dominates the market, about 60% of all headsets are quest. PSVR is about 25% The rest is PC VR. Quest is absolutely the right platform to go on, your Index's, Vives and Pico's are a miniscule market share comparatively, even when combined. Matt.
You didn't have to hurt me like that But yeah... as sad as it is (not a Meta fan in general), I guess it makes sense.
I do have a Quest 3. I won’t judge before I’ve seen it, but knowing the Quests capabilities I’m not expecting much. Matt has already pointed out that it’s not using Simugraph and it did look very game like. Much credit DTG for trying something new though. I’m prepared to be pleasantly surprised. It’s one of those Sunday afternoon when it’s raining type of purchases for me, when I’m bored and fancy something new to try. So whether I try it or not depends a lot on price. What I would say though is please pay attention to the cab movement. I’ve tried UEVR on TSW and since suspension was added, it makes me feel quite uncomfortable (Though I’m not a big fan of suspension on a flat screen to be honest).
I’m on the fence with TSWVR. VR Has never really been my thing, nor have I ever been able to afford the hardware or a system which meets the requirements to actually run VR - That being said driving trains in VR has been one of the few things for VR that has intrigued me for a while. It seems that TSWVR has a slightly more of an “Arcade Game” feel to it, with the whole ‘Career’ options and stuff rather than a simulation such as TSW - Not really my thing personally. I know this is perhaps to try and bring a new audience to TSW, and it’s very early days, but I do hope that one day we can get a more simulation focused VR experience. Anyway ramble over, everything I’ve said is probably completely irrelevant haha but I’m undecided as of right now Edit: If TSWVR Proves successful it will be interesting to see how new content will be added, such as routes and stock.
I'll be sticking with the UEVR, although not the finished article it does give me a great experience, especially sticking my head out of the window in the First Class MK1 compartment. Hopefully one day (whilst I'm still alive and kicking) we'll get full proper VR in the full TSW game.
Because your mobile phone would turn into a portable Tsar Bomba if it tried to run Brighton Mainline or DRA.
Right; and nobody is or will. Dumbing the game down to a lower level is stupid. It makes the game worse graphically and ultimately performance-wise, reduces the ability for extensive and complex routes, timetables, trains, etc. and limits the scope quite a bit. TSWVR isn't TSW, it's a brand new game under the same name. Bringing TSW to the low-requirements of VR won't work and is not very sensible at all.
I'm not against a dumb down version of TSW but as a different series. If TSW Tycoon was a stand alone game and not on Roblox I would probably play it. I think you can do a lot more with trains than being just a simulator like TSW. I think it's good DTG is exploring more avenues for their franchise.
