    Hi,
i want to know if it's possible to use geoportail to build routes (it's), instead google maps?
as you know, we have to register our credit card to google to obtain an api key.

    Thanks

But you are unlikely to be charged as the amount of data you get via api is low compared with how much free data you have.

yes, certainly, but the problem is that I don't want to take too many risks.... but the problem is that I really want to use it, but I'll settle for making fictitious lines.

I believe that Matt Peddlesden said even DTG had not been charged for using the Google Maps API.

saikosenseii I assure you that there is no chance of you ever being charged for using the Google Maps API in TS.

Just Trains, ever heard of them? A developer that's made a map or three? One of their lead mappers Thomas Harrison has said on Stream on numerous occasions that they have never been charged because their data usage (even though huge in Train Sim standards) falls way below the applicable charge threshold that Google start charging at.

I do not know of one single individual or dev team that has ever been charged and the reason is very simple.

The usage that Google has in mind is for Web developers, they create a lovely little website saying "come visit us here" and they provide a nice little interactive map for you to zoom in and scroll around and some even let you get directions from where you are to where they are. That website can potentially get 10's of thousands of hits per day, that's a lot of map data usage, THAT'S who Google are aiming their services and charges at, the tiny little insignificant usage that the Train Sim Editor uses is nothing in comparison, it doesn't even register a blip on Googles usage data, therefore unless they change their data usage plan then we will never get charged a single penny (cent/euro/yen) and there's no reason for them to ever do so because they are already catching the big fish they want right now they don't ever need to bother with us insignificant small fry.

To add to this I mean for a long time lots of people were using the API key that i had created (on a work account) - when i looked at it, after many years, nothing had been charged for it, so I think it must take a lot to even get close, so much that any individual using it would most likely never be charged for that.

Likewise I think (but I intentionally left it out of my last post because my memory is hazy on this and I cannot verify) Tom may have said many at JT shared the same key too, but like I say don't quote me on that, I may be confusing it with something someone else said (possibly even you!)

Suffice to say that NO TSC map modder/fiddler/fettler/fixer has EVER been charged for using the google api and in all likelihood never ever will.

    From https://www.promaticsindia.com/blog/google-maps-api-pricing-and-options

    "FAQs :
    1. Are Google Maps free to use on my website?
Yes, and the Cost of Google Maps API depends on the usage. For most people, it is free to use Google maps on their website or apps. Google maps provide a free credit for $200 per month per account which can be used towards any services. The most popular service of the Google Maps API is the static maps API which costs just $2 per 1000 requests. That means you can serve a whopping 1,00,000 free requests for map on your website with free monthly credits."

As a route builder isn't serving up any information to anyone using the route, merely using the service as a guide/template, they aren't going to run up a bill.
If you argue that accessing the service creates a bill, that works out as you'd need to load a map every 2.592 seconds for a 30 day month to hit the $200 threshold
