By default, it'll also be downloading all of your DLC (even though the dlc won't be playable until full release). Not sure what platform you're on, but on steam if you click on the Train Sim World 5 page in your library, on the left there's a "Manage my DLC" button, untick any that you don't want/need right now, and it'll adjust the download size accordingly. Hope this helps
That is really helpful thank you. Whilst i want everything eventually at the minute I just want to play the three new routes so that has really helped! Will DL the rest tomorrow
Yep - on Steam all existing DLC is playable during Early Access. For console players, you need to wait until Sep 17 (this is due to the way the console stores work, not a DTG decision)
Are you all living in the dark ages? How the heck is it taking you all so long to download content? I'm on fibre 80 down / 20 up, and it still isn't taking the insane lengths of time that you guys are all complaining about.
I was hoping to play tonight but it is halfway through five hours of installing! I am on quite a fast broadband speed.
I'm on similar speeds (albeit FTTC) and I'm expecting about 12 hrs to download 275GB - the maths checks out! They've strung fibre on the local telegraph poles, so I'm hoping for a speed bump in the next few months, but whether it comes at a sensible price …
Have you done a speed check on other services? 1Gbps is about the fastest possible on 5G, but depending on how far you are from the local antenna and what's in between, it can be a lot less. Steam seems able to deliver at least high multiples of 100Mbps - can anyone with a gigabit fibre connection verify?
yikes! I'm not looking forward to TSW5 peak hour next Tuesday. I only have half the content of everyone else here, and a snail speed 5-10 Mbps 5G internet service on Steam. TSW4 for me is around 100GB, but it will still take a week to download it all even with 1 route at a time.
I've got 900Mb download into the house (FTTP), and I'm regularly peaking into the 800Mbps on the DLC downloads for TSW5. It seems very "bitty" though, like it's not able to just download everything at full speed first then do all the expansions, it feels like it downloads each DLC then expands. I've got hard wired connection into my PC and writing to an m.2 drive so there should be no bottlenecks.
Well my entire library is only 133gb and still took around 45mins to download on 500mbs full fibre, and had to do it twice as ran out of disc space first time.
Just mentioned in the general feedback thread, for whatever reason my download is topping out at around 8Mb/s so around 2 minutes to grab 1Gb of data. Will be over 4 hours to get all my DLC installed. Not helped by starting the download process locks you out of playing the game, though I’m going to experiment later by seeing what happens if I start TSW5 then go back to Steam and tick a few DLC to download. Between DTG and Steam they absolutely need to sort this out, assuming we end up going through the same process every time TSW gets a “new” version.
Yeah it's 900mbps on speed test. I left it dl over night, it peaked around 300mbps on steam in the early hours, Most of the evening I was getting 8mbps max.
Yeah where I am its 25 download and about 5 Upload so speeds are slow. Downloading the game wasnt an issue for me though as PS5 allows you to pre download everything before release, so I just downloaded everything overnight while the PS5 was in rest mode. I then wake up in the morning of the release and everything is ready for 16:00
Mine was updating last night and had around four hours when I went to bed. I decided to pause it and shut down. This morning I thought I'd do a bit more before work but it started from the beginning again. I've paused it again and will leave it on this evening. I should have just left it on over night. I've never known one take this long.
I have warned of that, which is why it’s best to manage in small chunks. I honestly don’t know why Steam doesn’t support resume in this case.
That’s okay if you don’t have an energy conscious wife who objects to things being switched on unnecessarily! However I intend to try and put the PC on before tea later so I can get at least 30 or 40 minutes worth downloaded before playing the game.
I think you can pause and resume a download as long as the steam client is running pretty sure I've done this in the past.
To true, personally my pc tends to be running 24/7 even when sleeping at least I don't have a wife /partner to worry about
No it doesn’t work for some reason adding DLC, though it does with the core game as I have downloaded large titles in several goes without resetting to the start. Maybe this is a particular oddity with TSW then, sorry for ping but DTG Matt can you possibly shed any light? We certainly need to be talking with Steam to bring in resume for such massive download sizes (and the ability to d/L while running the game, too).
Odd - I have to frequently reinstall the entire game because I switch builds, and I often pause it because I can't have any meetings or be productive while it's downloading, and it resumes perfectly fine. Something strange going on for sure.
Unfortunately I have to admit I suffer from OCD about leaving things on so I try and avoid doing so, which can be a pain. I will overcome that tonight and leave it on come what may.
If it’s any help,I also had the same thing with TSC after my big spring clean the other month. I had to activate the DLC in small batches otherwise coming off the PC and restarting later it just went back to the beginning. I might check Steam later, see if there’s a buried setting that needs to be ticked but as I said other games with DLC, such as Sniper Elite 4, just picked up where they left off.
I play on Steam, before downloading I disabled all content except Southeastern High Speed Route and DLC from Deluxe, everything came out about ~44 GB. It seems to me it would be wise to download the "core" first, and then everything else as needed.
I’m fortunate to have 5Gb/s fibre, PC has a 2.5Gb/s Ethernet port, but Steam was peaking at 140Mb/s so it still took a while to download the 332 Gb behemoth that is my TSW5 installation (okay fair enough not that long).
I find if I pause the download before closing steam, it will resume when I start my pc. Well I have to hit the resume button. If I shut down my pc whilst it's downloading then it's back to zero.
Okay, just picked this tip up with a bit of deep Googling. Might be a default Windows setting. Go to the Windows Search bar and type Storage. Open the section that is titled "Configure Storage Sense Or Run It Now". Under Temporary Files untick "Delete Temporary Files that my Apps aren't using". It may be that when you exit Steam, Windows is simply deleting the data it has accumulated up to that point, particularly as Steam tends to just get shut down when you switch off the PC rather than closing the app first. Going to try that later, see if it works. Also I would say user beware, leaving temporary files undeleted could rapidly clog up your HD, so probably best to reenable after grabbing your content.
Gotta admit, I have a terrible habit of never shutting my PC down and only rebooting when Windows forces me, I know, i know, i'll go stand in the corner in shame
It depends weather your pc is energy efficient. When mine is idle, its running on the e cores and not using a lot of energy. My uptime is usually months!
My new PC arrived today so unless I can transfer the files and get steam to accept them then I will have to go through it all again.
All the comments including my first on talks about your dl speed. There is another factor in this equation, the hd you are down loading too. Your computer can only receive data from the net as fast as the memory and drive will store it. I can speak from experience on this. My 3.5 year old pc, which had a state of the art sdd for that time would dl off my 100 down fiber line at around 250 Mbps. With my new machine its now around 600 - 700 Mbps. The only change is the drive and memory speed. Yet, even with this new computer the dl took just over 2 hours.
Despite pausing the download and the shutting steam and the computer down this morning, it still has started from zero again. I have unticked all the DLC apart from the core, Goblin and Cathcart and the 380 for now and it has cut it down to just over an hour. I will add the rest incrementally. I will look forward to having a drive after choir practice.
Same here, I managed to persuade the wife to let me put the PC on at 4 PM which has got a bit downloaded. Going to finish that up and start TSW5, see if it will let me carry on downloading while playing. If not I'll finish up the run on WCMLS then go off and play something else while a bit more downloads. Talk about death by 1000 cuts... Edit: No it appears not. The route loaded but keyboard intermittently unresponsive to input and only one note working on the Pendolino horn. So it looks as if all the downloading needs to be done while playing something else.
Update... Slowly plodding away. What I have noticed, is if you start to download a single DLC file then have to interrupt it, that does resume next time. But for some reason, multiple files are a no, no.
Have to say that the whole download and install process on Steam was very smooth and automatic. 295 GB took about 1hr 40 mins on fiber optic connection. Profile import also straightforward, unlike the last couple of times. I understand there are problems with Raildriver, which is a potential game breaker for me. Settings are messed up too. I'll have to check everything out tomorrow but don't anticipate any major problems except the RD issues.
6 hours to dl 302gb file on a 1 gig fibre connection…..I thought it was just me?! Anyway, the usual mods added and the game is actually better than I saw on the preview stream, albeit the timetable needs looking at on the WCMLS!
Still faster than mine at 2 minutes for a Gb. However most routes are no more than 7 or 8Gb so basically 15 minutes or so each which means grab one route a couple of times a day before playtime. Suspect it’s either my Ethernet connection or old mechanical hard drives which are the bottleneck.
