I was making a minor modification to an RSSLO scenario to change the weather to a 3D type. On trying to save I was told the scenario was locked and my change couldn't be saved.

How do I unlock scenarios please?

Little padlock icon at bottom of editor screen on the right hand side.

Yes, I saw that, but it was showing an unlocked graphic. Or is that click to unlock, rather than its status? I'll give it a try now.

Changing the padlock icon in the bottom right makes no difference. 'Save Disabled' comes up in a dialogue box when pressing F2 regardless of whether the icon is locked or unlocked.

Sounds like a career scenario. Copy the scenario then try editing it

Yes, it's a career scenario. I'll try cloning it.

Cloning means the cloned scenario can be modified and saved, but it would be more convenient to be able to unlock the original scenarios.

True, but they're not supposed to be edited.

As a note, it is always a good idea to clone and make changes to that copy of any route or scenario. This way if you make errors or for some reason the route will no longer load you have a untouched copy. This process has saved me hours of work. Also a good idea to have another drive and backup your Railworks folder. If there is no room in your PC to install another drive then a fast USB 3.0 connected drive will work. I, myself have a 2TB drive and backup Railworks and all of my downloaded DLC on that drive and it's time to expand to a 3TB drive. Drive crashes happen.

Not being funny, but Dovetail have a very good reason for not allowing users to edit their career scenarios. It would allow cheating on the points scoring and award winning!

As Dr Trenchcoat said, cloning is the way forward if you need to edit one.

How do you clone and amend a QD scenario please?

One of the quirks of RSSLO's locked scenarios is that it stops you applying 3D weather to a QD. I'd like to be able to do this.

QD will always use 3D weather if "DynamicClouds" are enabled. A QD itself has no weather defined, as the player selects it via QD setup.

Selecting "Clear" will use Kuju\RailSimulatorCore\Weather\SL_Clear.bin (DynClouds) or RW_Clear.bin (DynCl. OFF)

    "Cloudy" will use SL_Cloudy / RW_Cloudy

    etc.

You can change a career scenario to a standard one using TS Tools. Whether that would unlock it, I don't know.

You cannot change a Career Scenario to a Standard one in TS Tools

You can Clone a Career Scenario to a Standard one in TS Tools which give you one that is unlocked.
Then you might have to tweak the timings of the Standard one.

I think Trev means editing the .bin in TSTools, of course you could just do that with serz and NP++ but I believe it can be changed.

Not sure on that - never tried it.
I did not know if you was able to change the Career Scenario to Standard if Steam might overwrite it?

Same as any official/default file that we may edit--Steam can/will revert it back to a new copy of the as supplied file.

Of course you can change them. That's how I did my NSCD and DP Career scenario fix packs. And Steam won't reset them as they're inside their own .ap :)

Shouldn't that be "And Steam won't reset them as they're not distributed via Steam"?

Steam / TS will remove your own mods too, if a duplicate of a file that's inside an .ap is found outside in the same virtual path (for example a cab camera mod). And I am using the original scenario's GUIDs / path, else it'd be just a clone and not give XP/Achievements which my mod does.

So you've gone a lot further than Peter's original query...

as an argument could be made that placing the scenarios in their own .ap is a form of cloning/copying.

Cloning means copying plus assigning a new GUID. I am modifying it, means my files are replacing the original data ingame.

Point is, you can modify Career scenarios. Just not directly via Editor.

    Point is that
is correct in the context of a straight edit of the files in TSTools et al

..and let's not forget that trev took us back to career scenarios when tried to answer

    which had already been answered
