They mean use the Pause/Break key, depending on your keyboard manufacturer has labelled it--it's two names for the one key.

Without knowing your make and model it's hard to advise you, just Google Pause/Break key followed by your make and model.

Google, create keyboard shortcuts for your model of computer. It varies with the version of Windows and most often used a combination of keys anyhow.

You don't have to pause the game just press the PRT SC key which is on your keyboard or in the game on the HUD press the camera icon at the bottom right-hand corner. On full-size keyboards it is the PRINT SCRN key.

If I press Print Screen it gives me a cropping tool (Win 11) definitely not what you want to pause a game.

Saying "Google it" is the modern way of saying search online via a Web browser, it doesn't even have to be Google it could be Bing or any other search provider but "Google it" is the most commonly used slang.

That is right and in the menu press full screen to take your screenshot. That is how I do it.

Maybe that the OP wants to freeze (pause) the game so the world camera (8) can be positioned to set the scene for the screen shot. Using the 2 key combination will get the game to pause, press 8 then he can set up the camera, use the camera on the HUD and a screen shot is taken without the HUD in the shot.

Yeah, it was me who told the OP the two key combo, what you quoted was me directly replying to Trev not aimed at the OP.

You can also take screenshots with the Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10/11 by pressing the keys Windows Logo Key + ALT + Print SCRN Keys. There is no need to pause the game to take screenshots.

You can press F12 anytime (or reconfigure Steam) and that's it. The game bar can become a way to standardize the screenshot.

I always adjust the view for captures, often stutter with Pause to take multiple similar and also adjust zoom or the angle.
Real life photography is often based on going to a location, setting up the frame, visualizing how the subject will look, waiting for it, try to click at the appropriate moment, and hope the results would be alright (in a few days).
In games I prefer to pause semi-randomly (I prefer stuff in the foreground so I keep projecting how it may look from the front) and then try and make the most of that paused location. Potentially stuttering a bit to position the moving stuff better.

To summarise the previous posts and add my own things:
    • Pause Break - Pauses the simulation. To remap this key you will need to figure it out for your computer's make and model.
    • Ctrl + S - Takes a screenshot using the in-game screenshot utility, which removes the HUD and saves a copy to your Pictures folder marked with the name of the route, as well as a Steam screenshot.
    • F12 - Takes a Steam-level screenshot. This will not remove the HUD.
    • F3/F4 - Toggles between HUD types and hides it.
    • There are other methods of taking screenshots but I do not recommend them for TS.

exactly this- sorry if everything is too confusing-

And i already just tried to find a way to either remap, change the key (no where or such place that allows me to do so). And still no use. The game refuses the pause without the pause menu. I dont know where to turn to anymore.

It's not the game's fault if your laptop misses that key, which is a standard IBM-compatible spec. It is however a desktop PC game, laptops not supported (because they have strange hardware sometimes...).

Some people like to put a bit more effort into the angle and positioning of the camera, Pausing the game to take the shot allows you to position the train where you want then move the camera to best capture that location. Rather than positioning the camera and waiting for the train to fly past and hope you can time it correctly.

In that case wouldn't it be easier to just create that static shot in the game's editor?

I have this issue on my laptop, no num pad & no pause/break key, I don't think its possible for me to remap another key for the pause function on my laptop as I have tried, all my shots are taken on the move or when the train is stationary.

Does your laptop have a line of icons on the number row or function row? If you send in a photo I might be able to see if there's one that's kept as a function on another key.

This has already been solved in post #5? Pause is a function of the Right Shift key on that model, clearly visible on the photo, fn+RShift.

Most important key for me, when facing an interesting situation, I quickly press F3, 8 and Pause. Then I fly around, looking for a good spot, eventually advancing the sim, ShiftCtrl+F4 for needed Depth of Field, until I got what I want, pressing Pause again and taking my shot (using GreenShot).

Only if you know the exact time, location, weather, ai trains to recreate the scene from a scenario. But then again if you have the pause break key why would you recreate something you have in front of you already.

You don't need to know what services not in a shot will be doing---you're posing a train for a photo!

I have recently changed laptops (for the better performance wise) and where my old Dell had Fn+B hard coded as Pause/Break, unfortunately my MSi laptop it is only mapped to Break and not Pause.

I downloaded an app called Power Toys from the Microsoft Store and under the Keyboard Manager is the ability to remap or create new maps for a function. It didn't allow me to remap the Fn+B which is seen as Break, but I was able to remap Alt GR + B to Pause and it works very well and with the app enabled on boot it is a permanent fixture - although I do have the option to make it only function for a specific app as well.

Now my real bug bear comes in that I really would like there to be an ability to Pause for the reasons listed above, to get screenshots in TSW......

Why are you not using Shift + Space, that pauses the game and also gives you the photo mode where you can change ToD, weather, lighting and apply filters.

No, you're misunderstanding. I am using the Photo Mode with Shift+Space - but I'd like to be able to walk around with the game paused before entering Photo Mode is what I'm after.

I have always recommended my friends to get PowerToys but it falls on deaf ears most of the time. It's a great set of tools, my favourite being the always on top function which really should be part of Windows by default. Amusingly it also allows the Windows 11 window presets to be available on Windows 10.
Photo mode does allow you to move the camera around so I really don't see the issue here.

As Doomotron says you have free camera movement in the Photo editor but I do kinda see what you're getting at too.

You can't speed up the movement and it's very slow by default, and you have to faff around with field of view and depth of field to see what you're pointing at.
