Well scaling mode is auto and scaling type is off, this is before I use LS, it just defaults to the higher resolution then is set in the the actual default tv resolution. The recommended resolution for my tv is 3840 but TSW is defaulting to a higher resolution of 4160 and im not sure why.

    L
What is that referring to then if it’s not scaling?

Well im not too clued up on names or what the difference is, but either way 2.3 runs a lot slower for me then 1.1.
I think the issue is that at that resolution my game is struggling to get over 40fps without LS so even if I limit it to 30 fps, half the refresh rate im still getting microstutters because its trying to push the system hard. If I lower the screen percentage to 90 it runs better but its still struggling to maintain the constant fps. That might just be a tsw5 thing though.
I hate the microstutters especially when it affects the audio so much.
Il try some lower settings and see if I can live with the lower resolution for now lol.
Still don't know why TSW is defaulting to a higher resolution then is set in the default screen resolution.
    Bit odd really

Just a guess. No idea if it’s still a thing with modern TVs, but my old TV had an overscan mode on one of the hdmi channels. If it was on it reported an incorrect resolution larger than the actual screen size. It was really annoying as it cut off the top and bottom of the picture. My PC had to be plugged into that specific channel with overscan off to get the correct resolution in games that used windowed mode.

Never really saw the point of it, so made sure to always turn it off.

So a bit of an update.
I swapped over my 43inch 4k tv to an old 21 inch 1080p monitor, ran tsw and it was still upscaling to 3160, then I realised that DSR factors in nvidia was still in use, even though the options weren't ticked it was still upscaling to the highest available, so I unticked them and sure enough it defaulted back to to 1080p in the old monitor.
Now enjoying a run up the ECML at 60fps and 200% screen percentage all while on the ultra preset in game.
Now I just need to figure out whats causing the microstutters lol.

well i'm proud to say i just ran the LA Union to CMF (Non-revenue) on the San Bernadino Line, with lossless scaling, and using the High version of this graphics and lighting mod. Started out smooth, then got a little wacky in spots but towards the end, even with two trains passing, it smoothed out for the most part. The best I've seen. Didn;t get the freezes I used to get prior. But that was only one route on that map, so I'm being a little catious. I turned HAGS off and made some adjustments in the registry. And I may look into increassing the pagefile. Haven;t done that since I upgraded the memory to 32gb earlier this year.
just gonna see what happens after

So here’s something going on that I just don’t understand. I recently upgraded my GPU from a 2080 Super to a 3050 v2 OC Edition, which is quite an upgrade (see full PC specs below) and performance in TSW5 using the same presets I had before as far as the mod and all other graphics settings and for some reason, performance is actually worse in some areas. I go through periods where FPS will be great, 50+, and then have these moments for a few seconds where it drops to like, 10 fps as if its loading something, then shoot right back up to 50 again. LAUPT for example on either AVL or SBD is quite abysmal. Barely 17fps if you’re standing on the end of the platforms looking straight ahead. My lower quality graphics card ran this better. What is going on here? I’ve tried adjusting many values in the .ini and none of them have made any difference.

To be honest the 3050 is a "worst" card than your 2080... Capture d’écran 2024-11-03 175648.png

both have 8gb vram so no improvement on that the 3050 is faster though
did you uninstall the nvidia driver completely?

    use DDU
Display Driver Uninstaller Thread | guru3D Forums

also make sure the ncvidia cache directory is emptied

he has an overclock edition so somewhat faster i guess
or it is almost the same

i would never buy a nvidia card that ends at 50 or lower those are more for laptops

Wow, this is interesting. I did lots of research before getting this card and figured it was an improvement but it’s not. It’s significantly worse than my 2080. So I’ve basically made the decision to revert back to my 2080 Super and return the 3050. There was nothing wrong with my 2080 at all. It still runs great. I just had the opportunity for an upgrade. But really, I’m looking for something like a 4060 or greater if I want a true 1:1 replacement. This was helpful.

Yes - the last two digits are important, which tells you how they perform. The first two 10/20/30/40... is the chip generation, not its power.

    So naturally a 3050 is weaker than a 2080, but a 3050 is a bit better than a 2050. 50 is low, 60/70 mid (HD) and 80/90 high perf (4K).

Okay, cool. Luckily I can still return it. And my 2080 is still perfectly fine so I’m just gonna throw it back in. Runs TSW5 amazing on the Ultra preset with the JetWash mod. The 3050 is trash with those settings compared to the 2080.

Of course the specific card's VRAM also plays a role. Don't go below 12 GB nowadays.

This is why when I replaced my broken laptop this week, an RTX 4090 was a must.

I'll get a 4090 as soon as the 5000 series is established. Best value for money then (I never buy the latest, you're paying way too much then - and it will be old anyway after a few years no matter what you buy, so better to always wait a bit until prices have settled.)

My problem is when I upgrade I'll need to replace the MB, RAM, CPU, PSU as well as the GFX card, might as well replace the case too whilst I'm at it, so the only thing I'd be keeping would be my SSD's, that works out expensive.

I needed a new laptop, I needed one that will last me a good few years, and needed it right now, to be able to continue my work on it. The 2023 ranges have all been reduced with a bunch of new laptops announced for this year, so I got an ok price on one. I'm definitely not regretting the choice of a 16GB mobile 4090 over a 12GB mobile 4080, and probably won't a few years down the line when I might have started to.

It was also a nice change not having to shell out extra to install 32GB of memory once a new laptop arrived for once :D

I already replaced all of that on my rig last year in 2023. So I should be all set for a 4090 or something like that.

I will say this, even with my 2080 Super, there are these moments, especially coming into Los Angeles, where the FPS just bog way down like its loading in or rendering something and then they just shoot back up. It never did this before. Certainly not on TSW4 and I don’t even think on a previous update of TSW5. On the original release version.

JetWash, what would be causing TSW to suddenly have these moments where the FPS just absolutely die. They’ll dip down between 10-20 for as short as 10 seconds or as long as a few minutes and then jump back up again. The only difference I’ve made at all since the last time I ran TSW was an update patch was applied to the game. Otherwise, everything is exactly as I had it before and I never had it doing this prior. Used to run very smooth at all times.

Sunrise and sunset are also really rough times with this. But it happens occasionally anywhere at anytime of the day. Where it’s especially bad is if you go to the outside of the train and try to look around. Sometimes it kills your FPS for a few seconds and then they return. Sometimes it doesn’t. I’m very confused.

I grabbed a 4090 a few months back when I spotted one of reputable make (Gigabyte) on Amazon at well under 1900€. I know it's a gamble, but I reckon the 50 series prices will be as inflated by retailers (way above RRP) just as the 40 series was. In my opinion FWIW the 5090 will be heading towards 3000€ or more when it's finally released.

Okay, time to be embarrassed for a moment:

You can completely disregard ALL of my previous posts about these issues I was having. It’s not related to TSW or the mod… I had accidentally plugged my GPU back into the wrong PCI port on my MoBo after doing some basic PC maintenance. That was literally it. Once I realized this and fixed it, TSW5 runs unbelievably amazing now, as it did before. No issues at all.

This is why you don’t do PC work after you’ve been at your job for 12 hours and woke up at 5:00am.

it's just so terrible in some spots, and I always think about this. No GPU no matter its strength will save you from this. 4090 here and coming into Frankfurt I get 23 fps... unacceptable.

@Train Sim Society, it the San Bernardino route that is killing my 4090. Some place it drops into the low 20s.

LOL, your profile pic suggest an old lady collecting tea cozy's for a hobby instead of a hardcore gamer ...

is there a way to show the asset count in a tile, so you kind of know why the GPU is struggling like that? Does fps vary when you look around?
A 4090 is about the best a player can get, and should run any game at max settings (given a reasonable screen resolution and fps limit)

    There is, inside the editor.

I’ve said this a million times before, but I don’t believe this is entirely the game. I think those having issues with 4090’s have something else going on because I don’t have the same issues. It goes without saying that where simulations are concerned it isn’t just ‘throw a high end GPU at it and all will be well’. The CPU needs to be as strong to balance the system, and I would suggest that if you’re seeing fps in the 20’s on these routes with that GPU you need to be turning your attention to your CPU, RAM and motherboard because it’s not the graphics card that’s the problem. To re-iterate, I am not seeing these same problems with a 3090.

I also have a 4090 and I'm around 60fps at Frankfurt. At some spots when walking around the station it drops to 45 - 50ish for moment.

Edit: Don't know what cpu you have but mine is an i9-13900KS with 32gb of ram.

@Train Sim Society, JetWash, let me clarify something, I am not getting these fps in the 20s most of the route, but maybe 5 - 6%, otherwise, it steady upper 50 low 60 (my limit is set at 62). With Frankfort, I am seeing maybe mid 40s around that large freight yard as you leave Frankfort, otherwise upper 50 low 60.
One place in San Bernardino that does this to me is the first 40 mph curve you get to as you head east. There is a lot of industry and clutter around this area.

Your 7950X3D is one of the best / fastest CPU's you can currently have. But even the best and fastest CPU can't do anything about bad optimizations in this case. The rail network at FRA is so big that it gives your CPU a lot to do. Even the fastest ones can not handle it (optimization needed).

So this is a common issue with TSW, where you have lots of tracks (another example is Bremen Hbf where this typically happens) you have FPS drops and the game becomes CPU bound and no longer GPU bound.

That CPU is known to have issues with the way windows uses the 3D cache and unless it’s set up correctly I believe (I don’t know, just what I’ve read) performance isn’t necessarily very good.

    A very quick Google search shows the following;

I can confirm that the ultra preset have something thats extremely demanding if you use the high or medium all this is gone and i get a stable 45/50 fps when reach area FFM or Hanau... there are some small stutter but it works way better than with the ultra with an extreme stutterparty..... I have copied the high one for the kinzigtalbahn and put add it separate to the ultra version.

….except I have made that preset to run flawlessly on my machine which although decent is now a long way from being the latest and greatest. It is a 5800x3D, RTX3090 and 32GB of 3200mhz DDR4 RAM with 2 SSD’s so at least 2 or 3 generations old now. I gently undervolt both my CPU and GPU because it makes sense to. Utilising lossless scaling to double my capped frame rate of 30fps I can maintain 60fps everywhere with the settings as per the manual and the Ultra preset. That’s with the game running in 4K with the screen percentage set to 125%. If people with stronger machines are not getting at least the same results then there are issues with the way those machines are set up. It’s quantifiable so there is no other conclusion to draw here.

You are absolutely right though. Ultra is meant to be demanding, unashamedly so. It is meant to be the best the game can currently look and is only for high end machines. To re-iterate, the lighting is identical between all the presets, the differences come with the graphical fidelity (shadow quality and draw, foliage draw, sky quality etc etc). What you’ve done there though is exactly what I would recommend, that if Ultra is too much for a specific route then copy the high preset for that route and overwrite its Ultra counterpart. You can open the GodMode.sav file with something like NotePad++ and easily copy the presets.

Always remember though that Ultra works on my machine, so if yours is better you should not be seeing these issues. If you are something is wrong.

This issue is already fixed by windows with a special update. And the whole topic that its in the link is nearly a year old.

Let me call all points here.... That losless scaling thing is not a favor for everyone so for people they play without, i should advise use High instead of Ultra its wasting youre fps and if you can't run it on the best PC on the market, see Sharon E her PC.... that its even nothing to use besides losless scaling. Maybe its an option to rename it from Ultra to Losless scaling preset?

We have nearly the same system... Only i have an 4070ti instead of a 3090 so that should not the point. Indeed its an option to change the preset for a more demanding routes and use for the other ones the ultra section! Is there in general a large difference between high or ultra? I have see not so many difference at all.

Sorry my friend, but this is absolutely not true. Nothing is to be configured differently from any other CPU. The thread in Reddit is 10 month old.

That specific CPU has issues with the way the non-3D cache cores work causing performance problems with games, or has that problem been fixed? I don’t own that CPU so don’t know for sure, but it was everywhere when they first released.

The difference is in the points I made previously, mainly draw distances, shadows etc. The lighting is the same.

It’s very possible it’s a resolution difference as I play at 3440x1440 ultra wide. I have a ryzen 9 7950x3d CPU and 64 gb of ram at 6000mhz

Having these enhancements for so long, I forgot how horrible TSW default graphics were. As I was playing I was sitting there wondering why everything looked so horrible, originally thinking my resolution was downscaled for whatever reason.
