the fact this route is nearly double the size of kassel wurzburg, a route which is roughly 110 miles is astonishing

shows that the amount of assets in it, the stock, and the length, is unlike anything the UK playerbase has seen

it truly is a chonker of a route

Slightly OT, but B99 is so good i'm having trouble playing anything else tbh. I don't follow DR development that closely so i wasn't expecting such a huge update. I know it's apples and oranges, but i'd love to have an in-game economy mode like DR has in TSW someday- really gives context and structure to freight gameplay. I know a lot of people would never touch it, but i probably wouldn't ever stop lol.

I don't think that's what TSW is designed for...just like DV isn't designed to go beyond the Valley. Two entirely different games (which I both enjoy)

Must pencil that in for a revisit once the novelty of WCMLOS wears off. And now 7 minutes to go...

Has any route release been so eagerly awaited?!

One of my likes is that the 87s are named correctly. Will it be Wolf of Badenoch or Knight of the Thistle for my first run....or City of Manchester!!

The one thing I am debating is whether to step over the first Journey leg, which will no doubt be the usual once around the Training Centre. Hopefully that doesn't need to be completed to unlock the first proper trip.

Will do my usual walk about board a train and key 3 for a front window view before I drive on another go. One of TSWs winning features is the ability to ride the trains which is why the steam AI no sounds is such a poor show.

Well looks like Steam is running late. Gone 1800 and no sign of it on Steam. Getting sick of searching for Carlisle and seeing how many different guises N3V are trying to sell the old S&C for Trainz in!

It's there now albeit right at the bottom of the DLC list, unlike MBTA which gets a headline feature.

Downloading now but looking like half hour or so, which means I won't be playing until later on.

DTG - you need to come up with some agreement to get this stuff out earlier than 1800 GMT on Steam.

For those who do the 87 introduction, I'd be interested to know if anyone can get past holding the brake lever in the release/overcharge position. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it will not acknowledge this step.

I just held it down for ages in overcharge and it eventually worked.

The 87 has given me a large appetite for Br electric locomotives, I need that 86!

I've just been playing around in the route a bit and so far it is a blast. The 87 really is the star of the show. A long mainline route has the potential to be very boring, which we've seen in a few other routes. Things like LZB on some of the German routes, or the general simplicity of modern UK locos (very easy safety systems, one handle throttle, forgiving brakes) can make a route get mundane fast.

BUT - the 87 - so far, is a very engaging train to drive. It isn't hard (very similar to the older German electrics we've gotten before like 103/110/111) but it keeps you busy. Because it is not an ultra responsive throttle you have to anticipate when and where to notch down, ahead of time, to keep yourself at optimal speed on up and down grades. And also watching for the neutral zones. I always feel like UK TSW is "easy mode" but the 87 on this route changes things.

Because the route is new, so far I've been staying in cab view, but what I've seen of the scenery is fantastic, very immersive. Every bridge and building feels authentic, not the sterilized look that assets have in a lot of routes. The sway of the cab and suspension also makes this route very immersive.

I am glad to finally have a UK loco-hauled passenger focused route with an electric loco - very cool.

    Home run.

People laughed at me for asking... and it turns out the toilet in the loco is a urinal not a sit down toilet - BUT there are toilets accessible in some of the stations AND you can sit on them  .

Here’s a nice screenshot I took of the route (and definitely perfectly timed too)

Absolutely Fantastic Route so far, and may be my new favourite!

Class 87 vigilance, presumably instates/isolates via an MCB in loco room?

Only had time this evening to do a Preston-Carlisle run (not stopping at Penrith), but thoroughly enjoyed it. Took a little bit of getting used to the train (Lord Nelson in my particular case) but I'll be exploring a lot more over the weekend.

Just a minor quibble- shouldn’t the rear pantograph be raised rather than the first?

The class 87 only has 1 pantograph.

I bought mine from JT directly when I got home at 3PM GMT. Just played the initial training modules and experimented with other stock in free roam. The 87 is arguably the best loco in TSW although I am not a fan of the way they rigged the tap changer. (Manually move back and forward with delay!) vs the way AP did the tap changers on their TSC 87 and 86 EP. (Hold button + press A/D to notch, tap changer automatically returns to hold when keys released)

As for Mk3s though. I do feel they lack a bit in terms of functionality. Sure it is nice we have actual loco hauled Mk3s in-game now but I have some major oversights/issues with them.
    1. The train lights cannot be controlled from the appropriate stations in the vestibules, lights can only be toggled via RCH signals from another coach that has a working light control key station (e.g. Mk1 BG or Mk2a)
    2. The lights are active irrespective of ETH status. In real life Mk3 coaches have their lighting powered by the train supply through a motor alternator (MA) set. In the sim however it seems like they behave as if they were traditional Mk1/Mk2a coaches with the lights powered by batteries charged by axle driven dynamos. Mk3s do have batteries but they only power small equipment iirc and those are not charged by axle generators but are also charged by the ETS fed MA set.
    3. End gangway doors are unable to be manually toggled open/closed by the player. This presents a potential interoperability issue in formation designer/free roam. The unmodified Mk2a coaches share the same problem, they are permanently locked closed unless coupled and the coaches consider the other vehicle a "friend" upon which the doors will open. When seeing them couple you can actually see the gangway doors are animated entirely wrong, in real life they swing inwards and lie flat against the end bulkhead. In-game however the whole gangway door assembly simply just slides sideways into the wall. I also say unmodified for the Mk2s because someone made a mod for Mk2 coaches that unlocks the doors and allows them to be manually openned/closed by the player.

If these problems could be rectified then I would be grateful.

    Fantastic route so far.
I would have liked to get into the switch room to enable AWS but upon opening the door I couldn’t get through as I seem to be too tall.
There's obviously something I’m missing (apart from a few extra much needed brain cells).

Not surprising as our backs were bent with 14 hour shifts down the pit and poor growth from eating nothing but a lump of coal for breakfast for years.

Really great route, the Journey mode is underwhelming (thanks gen 8) but the route is fantastic with details pouring out of every crevice, stations are the best they've ever been, the 87 is well made, scenery is lush and there's tons of variety.

I think guard mode might be playing up a bit but otherwise i'm feeling a 10 on this route

Just finished my first run and by 'eck is that route bloody excellent. I must admit I would love to comment on the scenery more thoroughly but that 87 does take some concentration. What I saw looked absolutely gorgeous though. I find that the controls on a controller feel right to use, but never had the AP version in TSC so haven't had that experience to compare to. The route did feel alive and the immersion felt incredible.

By the looks of it, this really is splendid!.
Wouldn't it ne nice, however, to have some Mark 2D / E / F coffins in game too, along with the obligatory Mark 1 RU(B)s etc?.

Well done though Just Trains, you've raised the bar no end!

Only had a run from Preston to Lancaster in the 87 so far (Sir Winston Churchill) and then a class 101 from Lancaster to Morecombe. I am very impressed with what I have seen so far. The 87 is lovely to drive and does take some concentration, I love the feeling of speed when you are bowling along at nearly 100mph. The suspension is very effective.

The Morecombe branch is lovely, again the suspension on the class 101 is well done and I loved the track joint sounds. I do think the class 101 could do with a new sound set but that isn't a JT issue.

I did think there might be a tad more passenger services with the class 47 but it would make sense for there not to be.

I can't wait to explore more of the route as the week goes on and do a full run in the 87.

I gasped, as soon as I opened this route... It reminded me when I was a child (late 80s-early 90s), with those big yellow TVs (which were orange in my country!) and many other details of that era  ... Absolute masterpiece from JT!! Just a little disappointment on those bare mountains... But I appreciate and share (having experience in 3d modeling myself) the explanation given by JT guys. Again, EXCELLENT work all!
First shots, obviously 80s style ! - 1A18 Carlisle-London Euston Class 87 006 "City of Glasgow".

The "Scottish" coincidences don't end there... Training center test run with the 033 "Thane of Fife"... Now this 006 "City of Gasgow"... This game seems to know that I love that magnificent UK area!

Pair of 101s and rack of Mk3a in Lancaster.
Having performed 3 services, one for each type, I can confirm my initial impression. 10/10 JT! You deserved it!
PS. Note of merit to the optimization! Stable and fluid gameplay on 90% of the route. Only 3/4 small drops from 60 to 30-35fps. Remarkable!

One minor quibble, apologies if already said, is that I've noted the "next station" announcements you can make on the 142 haven't been updated, so only really works right when you're arriving at Preston.

I'd like to congratulate and thank JT and everyone involved in this route.

Growing up in Kendal in the late 80s and early 90s, it really is a walk down memory lane. Standing on Oxenholme Station in the cold with assorted bored and feezing family members, some still with us and some not, crossing off 87s and other typical traction in my pocket train spotters book - you've took me right back there today and evoked some lovely memories.

Its a magnificent route, well done to everyone involved.

As others have said (and was pretty clear from the advance videos), it's a magnificent route and shows the full potential of TSW5. What most impressed me, though, were the frame rates, which were far better than most of the new routes (Goblin, WCMLS, Frankfurt, …). I was expecting my poor old potato of a PC (6yo with a 2070 midlife kicker) to be brought to its knees, as I experience approaching Frankfurt and Euston in particular; but leaving Carlisle (OK, it's not Euston, but still quite large and very busy) it absolutely sailed along at 30fps.

I think I'm in love! (And with any luck Santa's going to buy me a 4090.)

The route and the 87 look excellent. The only disappointment is that - and I stand to be corrected on this - it’s not possible to drive the 87 using a RailDriver. There seems to be no way to hold the power controller in “Run Up”.

If anyone works out a way please let me know. For me, as for many others, driving with RailDriver is an important part of the TSW experience.

Yeah I was expecting it to be terrible on FPS due to its size and how many different trains are involved but it is surprisingly good on base PS5. I also have a PS5 Pro and will be trying it on that shortly.

You're right this route shows the potential of TSW and is a great example of what can happen when the devs take their time to get things right (I think this one's been in production for like a year).

First look at WCML: Preston to Carlisle...

This is the first route in an area I know very well, so I had to start with my walk to school and the viaduct I had to walk under to get to school every day for c12 years from the late 60s to 1979... and its spookily accurate!

The rest of the village (Galgate) is a bit odd, the cricket ground is missing, as are the pubs, but the mill is there and - wow - the railway assets are just absolutely spot on.

Lancaster is pretty realistic as well. The Priory (NOT the cathedral!!), castle, and even Ashton Memorial poking up in the background

You can almost smell the breweries!

As for the trains... well, i'll play with them tomorrow

Just Trains - having spent the last few hours on this route I have a question. Do you want my wife now, or to wait a few years for my daughter?

This is just everything I wanted.

    Everything.
