As title says, one section here dedicated to limitation for gen8 consoles for existing dlcs or upcoming contents will help to better understanding what limitations for gen8 players will placed, until gen8 will dropped, hope this will help a lot all players still on gen8.

    Gen8 is coming-up to 12 years-old.

The same age as an AMD Athlon II X2

How well does one of those run TSW5?

Probably better than it would run Crysis

Won’t limiting already existing timetables cause more disruption on gen 8?

This site is very good for listing the services you get in timetable mode for different platforms: https://tswtracker.com/stats.php?do=dlc

Hopefully it keeps getting updated as MBTA Commuter and Preston-Carlisle are not on there yet.

I'm really sorry to be "that guy" but I'm going to say it anyway.

An XBOX Series S is £199 / £209 most places right now.

You don't have to drop £400+ on an XBOX Series X or PlayStation 5 if you want something to tide you over until the next generation arrives.

I know that £199 is still a good amount of money for some, and buying an XBOX is not ideal if you are a PlayStation 4 owner who wants to keep their game library in one place, but it's still less painful that dealiing with Gen8 hardware for another few years.

I quickly looked at some routes and saw that Dresden Riesa PC Version has less services in the base layers and BR 101 that the consoles, why?

I didn't make this and don't have that route so not sure. There is a disclaimer about possible errors with a link to DM on Discord.

I’d say it’s cheaper for people on PS to get a PS5, it’s what £150ish more which seems cheaper than moving from PS to Xbox.

In any case I don’t think it’s fair that in every thread discussing gen8 someone jumps in to tell them they’re wrong for playing on it & they need to make the jump. DTG are selling software for that hardware & whilst there are obviously issues there, those customers have a right to open communication with DTG without getting jumped on.

Personally I think a Gen8 focused discussion area is a good idea, as the realities between those builds & Gen9, then PC are quite far apart now.

Alright, then I have one simple question.

How many more years are you expecting Gen8 to be supported, taking into account that features are already being cut because the machines just can't cope?

I'm honestly not looking for an argument, or to offend anyone. I am genuinely interested in your answer.

At least one more while they are still propped up by Sony/Microsoft. After that, who knows, DTG will still chase the money if they can.

I will take one guess as to why you’re so eager to ditch gen8, but do you honestly think we’ll see any real change afterwards? We’re already at the limits of Gen9 as far as DTGs optimisation goes, so it’s just swapping one issue for another to be honest.

In any case it’s besides the point, the fact is that it exists now & it’ll exist for a while more, and even so after that when it’s dropped. My point was that there’s no need for people to swoop in on every post mentioning gen8 and telling them they should spend a few hundred to play something they’ve already been sold on their current machine.

The bottom line is that in the next couple of years we’ll be having this discussion about how gen9 is a problem, because as outdated as the hardware may be, DTGs optimisation is a massive part of the overall problem.

    Thank you for the reply.

I play TSW5 on an XBOX Series S myself, so can assure you that I am not in a rush for major technical or graphical leaps in performance, otherwise I would own a Playstation 5 or XBOX Series X.

I was honestly curious to know why people are clinging to last generation hardware, as the only other console I've seen supported for more than 15 years is the SNK NeoGeo AES, and I just find it fascinating to watch.

Your " curiosity " sounds more like condescension to me. We have many people on the forum who are quite young and may not have even a couple hundred pounds, euros or dollars to buy even second hand hardware.

They are entitled to " cling " to their old consoles as long as they can and DTG is willing to cater to them.

So, frankly I think you and others should lay off the gen 8 players. It's not your place to " advise " them to pony up and buy new equipment.

I think the mods should be wary of threads like this one and others started by the gen9 nobility, ostensibly to " advise " gen 8 players of their limitations.

We are already more than half way through this Generation. The Old gen has been more than generous with time than any other generation in the past.

It won't be long, TSW6 maybe. Everyone will have to made the jump soon regardless, or stay with old content.

Nobody of dtg will give an answer when gen8 will be dropped, even if they already would have decided it "its in 6 months".

Players will know by an unexpected post in the announcement section.

It's kinda fascinating that the TSW community is one of the few communities that I know of, that have alot of people clinging to older Gen 8 consoles. It's sort of nice to see, but at the same time I feel as if eventually, they just either have to make the jump or be left behind.

That being said, I definitely do see how games like TSW are getting more and more bloated, and less and less optimized... at least to what is possible. Therefore it'll become much harder to play these Sims on old hardware to the point where it becomes a slideshow. So it'll definitely be an issue eventually where the game just becomes unplayable for them.

Ultimately, it'll probably come down to how many people are still on Gen 8 vs Gen 9 that'll determine how long the older consoles will be carried along.

Nothing wrong with clinging to old hardware for affordability reasons but at some point that will also mean clinging to old games. Even a lot of the sports franchises are starting to go Gen 9 only.

I'd expect that with limited layers and timetable action, Gen 8 players will stop paying full price for things = drop in sales, market share and the eventual dropping of support.
TSW6 launch would be my guess.

The X box Series S will be in the Crosshairs next (my machine).
If you can take a positive out of this, at least all the DLC you have is upgradeable at 0 cost.

If that goes the same way as Gen 8 with limited gameplay, then off to CEX for a trade up to the X.

I'm hoping that will be in a year or two and I can wait and just upgrade to Gen a 10 machine.

Off topic but one of the biggest games this year was EA College Football and it was Gen 9 only. Apparently it led to a decent drive in Gen 9 sales. The Gen 8 stuff is a bit of a cycle, as long as there are millions of them in use, publishers want to release games for them, and as long as games are being released for them, a lot of their owners see no reason to upgrade. But when some heavy hitters like sports games become Gen 9 only a chunk of those people finally buy one.

Gen 8 has carried longer than usual I think because of a few reasons: Gen 9 are the most expensive consoles ever, there was a shortage of them for years, and publishers keep supporting them.

With TSW specifically I don’t buy too much into the idea that Gen 8 is holding the overall game back. I don’t think dropping Gen 8 would suddenly mean the Gen 9 users get a better looking game with bigger timetables overnight. Gen 9 is already struggling with this game because (IMO) it is not optimized well to begin with. I’m just surprised it works on Gen 8 at all, although from what I’m reading with each new release it seems like they are only getting a shadow of the content we get on 9/PC.

Wasn’t Gen 7 the most expensive ever? Also including inflation and not buying from scalpers.

Probably the best way I've heard it summarized, and the 'gen 9 nobility vs the gen 8 peasants' is terrifically apposite. Basically saying 'let them eat cake'. Anyone who has this attitude is a deluded out-of-touch snob frankly and basically yes, it's huffing copium that by a wave of the Dovetail magic wand to make the old consoles go away forever, that miraculously all their frustrations & troubles with the game will be lifted, as if they felt it purely on the basis that there are people playing it on older systems and not crunch rushed deadlines, competence levels & poor optimization. Moreover I do the tend to agree that they should stop making games for gen 8 now, at this current state of things because I play on it and know how bad it's getting. I will say, them ruining the Livery Designer UI for me isn't a console issue, it's a dev issue!

It's easy to scapegoat something when you're so wrapped up in the idea of potential prosperity. You'd think with the first sign of crashes, framerate drops & weird passenger behaviour etc. if gen 8 was suddenly gone, that it would surely crack the dtg-tinted glasses finally...

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been out for a while. I appreciate people may genuinely struggle financially, but if they’re able to buy regular DTG content, I’m sure they could have bought a Gen9 console by now. I mean Sony are on Gen9.5 now.

Having to make content for Gen8 consoles must be having an impact on content for everyone. I can’t imagine it can’t be.

Yeah how dare people just not to buy expensive products! Blame on them.

Seriously, the problem isn't players that haven't upgraded yet, the problem is a developer/publisher who is willing to release broken content onto platforms that aren't suitable in the first place. Putting this problem onto the players (who are paying the exact same price as everyone else) doesn't sit well with me at all. Maybe because i know how crappy TSW is on Gen8. It shouldn't be there in the first place. That DTG is just starting to fading out gen8 now is telling me that they were cool with releasing content in those states because its created enough revenue. Now that gen 8 players are likely fade out anyway they starting to ditch it....

And sorry but if you want a real update, you have to get around that Series S. You will likely end up in a similar situation pretty soon as Series S isn't that powerful compared to gen8 anyway.

You seem to be twisting my words to fit your own agenda, which seems to be a rant against DTG as your post continues.

DTG are currently maintaining 5 separate forks of TSW.

    - XBOX One
    - XBOX Series S/X
    - PlayStation 4
    - PlayStation 5
    - PC

So when a bug is found in one build of TSW5, the dev team have to go back and test all 5 forks of the game. When Gen8 is dropped, there will only be 3 forks of TSW to focus on, which will reduce the workload on DTG, making fixes and updates appear faster.

Nobody knows when DTG will end support for Gen8, but life will undoubtedly be easier for them when it does.

So, you are saying that TSW5 should not exist on Gen8 consoles, but you shouldn't need a Gen9 console to play TSW5?

So please tell us your solution to this problem.

Yes, my Series S will either go to the grandson or get turned into an emulation box in the next 12 months or so.

I'm hoping that XBOX Series X gets a good discount in next years Black Friday sale, but there's no rush.

With a half decent gpu and plenty of ram, probably a hell of a lot better than a gen8 console. I think memory is the limiting factor when it comes to the older consoles.

I think you’re right if you look just at the release price as the PS3, which was something crazy like $599 USD in 07. But that was quickly reduced and the PS3 had several price drops throughout its lifecycle. The slim was $299 by 2009 and drops kept coming. Sony learned their lesson with the stumble out the gate on PS3 which was why they launched PS4 at $399.

Big difference with this generation is there have been no price drops at all, outside of the odd sales. In some markets the prices have actually been raised. PS5 launched at $499 US for a disc one in November 2020 and it is still that MSRP today. So customers that usually waited a few years for a price drop have never gotten that. Only drops have been temporary sales.

PS3 was very expensive, but then that's part of the reason the damn thing failed as hard as it did initially. A launch PS3 included a Blu-ray player when that was a cutting edge feature, and full PS2 internals included out of the box, both at the time drove the price up massively. Nice value adds if you didn't already own, or wanted to keep your old PS2, and wanted to get into Blu-ray's, but added way too much to the cost for those on the fence about it. Notably that's why only early models could play PS2 games, they cut the feature out in order to get the price cheaper.

Also needs to be said that PS3 was not priced well compared to the competition. By 2006 Xbox 360 had been avaliable for a year, and I believe was as low as the $200 range if you wanted to settle for a basic model. But even the higher end models were still in the $299 to $399 range, still well under the base PS3. Meanwhile the Wii which launched within days of the PS3 sold only at $250, and you had no higher end SKU's to think about. Heck, a big point that was made by a lot of people even before the PS3 launched was that for price of a 80GB PS3 in 2006 you could get both a 360 & Wii.

Here's my thing with Gen 8 console support. As routes become more and more graphically and memory intensive, it's going to take DTG more and more effort to ensure each release can have at least some gameplay on Gen 8. Unless they raise the price on DLC though, that's going to have to be done without changing the amount of total work being put into each route. We're already seeing more and more bugs, lacking timetables, and other areas where content was rushed or cut due to the increasing amount of time it takes to craft a whole new timetable and put in loads more optimization in order to not fry people's consoles. In other words, both gen 8 and gen 9/PC players are having to accept less. Gen 8 has to accept barren timetables and the lack of ability to use all rolling stock that comes with routes or take advantage of layers, and gen 9 players are subject to half-baked content, all for the benefit of gen 8 players who we can tell aren't even happy with it, if the number of forum and discord posts any given day complaining about why all the layers aren't showing up is any indications. I have nothing against Gen 8 users. I own a gen 8 console and generally just do all my gaming on the computer I use for school. But I'm struggling to see how anyone is served by a system of giving less to people who want more than their systems can handle, while taking away from those whose systems can. It would make more sense if gen 8 players accepted that their systems can't handle modern TSW5 routes, but they don't. There is constant complaining. DTG can only do so much to cater to a 15 year old system without holding the whole community back.

Preston Carlisie route is the dlc that have made me to rush for PS5, i don't like anymore to have limited layers on PS4, hope i upgrade soon and buy the route and next upcoming contents on PS5 only, the ps4 is better for older games like gta san andreas

    Ok :D

I mean i stand by my point that it is questionable at least to release content in the state it often came for gen 8s. Player still reporting that WCML (one example) is basically unplayable on gen8 amd by the looks Series S aswell. No i don't think that should happend in the first place.

Of course, at some point every player needs to upgrade their device, be it PC or Console.

The Situation still is : players where sold unplayable content, the solution cannot just be to ask players to upgrade their device after all of that.

Of course, TSW runs waaay better on gen9, no question.

My solution: immediately stop continuing releasing unplayable content. That easy. If Routes are to heavy for Gen8 they shouldn't be sold there.

And yes, i criticised that here and on other places. No good practice in my eyes. That you feel personal offended or accusing me of agendas is not really my problem. You do you
