I see for other user's post that I can either Like it or mark it as Helpful.

Simple question that I have. What is the difference between the too?

    Please and thank you

Like if you agree, helpful is rather self explanatory. Though I tend to use help fairly rarely as I know it takes up more space in the other person's alerts so just use like for near enough everything.

I have switched of the Like/Help alerts in the forum options so the only advice I get if someone replied to a thread I’m following, or otherwise pinged me.

A good example of Helpful, would be in the WCMLoS feedback thread where I posted a question this morning about the 08 scenario, whether it had been found to be bugged. Someone replied stating they had just finished it without issues, so that got a Helpful tick, rather than a Like. Like I tend to find is best used where you agree with a comment but rather than clog up the forum with a quote then a one or two word comment like +1 or Me too, serves the purpose adequately.

One is a tick, another is a spanner. Beyond that, it means nothing.

    As for my rules...

I click like if I like someone's post, or if I agree with them in some way. I also click like on posts that offend me personally, although I've only had to do that like three times in my time here. I try not to like posts that I believe instigate meaningless arguments that get threads locked, even if I agree with their viewpoint.

I click helpful if I find someone's post helpful, or if I believe it is helpful to someone else.

Of course, the above rules are subject to whether I remember to click the buttons.

    No it is not.

Why would you pick helpful but not like?

Likewise the other way around: Why you pick like but not helpful?

Ok then I'll explain it. Helpful is if you find something helpful.

I find it ironically annoying when it does that.

Note to self: never say what annoys you, people will only do it more.
