A retro setting, a classic locomotive and cross-border travel. Mittenwaldbahn is coming soon from the TSG team, releasing on February 11th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for €39.99/£32.99/$44.99.

    Timeline Recap:
    About TSG
    [IMG]

Train Sim Germany (TSG) has been creating content for both Train Simulator Classic and Train Sim World since 2011 both as a contractor and as a Partner Programme developer.

Previous Train Sim World releases include the G6 shunting locomotive and the fan-favourite Niddertalbahn route Add-on, as well as Train Sim World’s first ‘Expert’ level locomotive: DB BR 101 and the first German main line diesel locomotive with the DB BR 218.

    The Route
The might of machinery makes a molehill out of a mountain – step back into 1989 and embark on a daring climb. Featuring steep gradients, stunning scenery and the iconic ‘Krokodil’, head off on a nostalgic adventure between Germany & Austria!

Also known as the Karwendelbahn, the Mittenwaldbahn traverses the Alps between Bavaria, Germany and Tyrol, Austria. Talks of a mountain railway went back as far as the 1880s, although no trains would turn a wheel over the pass until 1912. The line was planned to be electrified from the start, to make tackling the route much easier.

Even with electric traction, traversing a mountain range is no small feat for a standard gauge railway. The Mittenwaldbahn features many tunnels and iconic bridges, with incredible ruling gradients as steep as 3.8%. Such lines offer challenge, but also scenic wonder; take-in the sights of the peaks and valleys, with the rails rising as high as 1.1km above sea level and Seefeld providing the summit of the route.

Along the route lie principal stations at Innsbruck, Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, punctuated by impressive infrastructure such as the bridge over the Schlossbachklamm. The area is known for its ski resorts and services will vary between those transporting ski tourists and local freight for the towns situated along the route.

    The Trains
    [IMG]

    ÖBB 1020 ‘Krokodil’
    [IMG]

Joining Train Sim World for the first time is the classic European shape of locotmotive often given the term ‘Crocodile’ or ‘Krokodil’. The term extends to different classes of locomotive in mainly Switzerland but also Austria, Germany and others beyond that. The long ‘snouts’ at either end are reminiscent of those from reptilian nature, with the cab and pantographs and transformer located in the central section. Many examples of this locomotive style date back to over a century ago.

The ÖBB 1020 ‘Krokodil’ dates from later with examples built between 1940 and 1956. As a result, this locomotive offers a vastly different sort of driving experience to that of other European locomotives in Train Sim World. Turning the control wheel results in the taps visibly moving in the machine room as you travel up and down the mountainous route.

    DBB BR 111
in DBB Blue and Cream livery

Joining the ‘Krokodil’ is the BR 111 previously seen in Bahnstrecke Salzburg-Rosenheim and the separate Train Sim World 5 Gameplay Pack. In both of those settings, it represented a classic form of traction over more modern locomotives.

In Mittenwaldbahn instead the 111 offers a ‘more modern’ experience over the ageing ÖBB 1020 and comes in a new livery of DBB Blue and Cream, making a change from the ubiquitous red paint seen in this part of Europe.

For Mittenwaldbahn the cab and exterior have been worked on to better represent this locomotive as seen in the late 1980s, including a reworked cab layout. The above image shows the reworked older cab for Mittenwaldbahn (left) and the more modern version seen in Pfälzische Ludwigsbahn: Mannheim – Kaiserslautern and Bahnstrecke Salzburg - Rosenheim (right).

This locomotive will also feature the safety system Indusi, rather than PZB. This safety system was previously seen on the Niddertalbahn’s BR 365. Player that are not familiar with this system will be able to learn more with the route’s Manual, which will be published around the release.

    Coaches and Wagons
n-Wagen ‘Silberlinge’ Bn and ABn, IC coaches, Es50, rmms663, Tadgs and Shimmns wagons

Facilitating both passenger and freight services is a selection of rolling stock, with both new additions and reliveries of stock seen in previous route Add-ons.

‘Silberlinge’ Bn and ABn coaches in DBB brushed metal livery are hauled by both locomotives for passenger trains along the route, with notable weathering on the roof. Mixed rakes of IC coaches in both DBB blue & cream, and red & cream liveries offer a more presentable setting for passengers.

For freight trains, two new wagons are included in the Add-on: the DBB Es50 and DBB rmms663 with the latter hosting four different types of loads! Tadgs 959 and Shimmns 708 wagons are also included, in new DBB liveries.

    Timetable and Gameplay
    [IMG]

The timetable will feature services focused primarily on the ÖBB 1020 which has 104 playable services, with a supporting 63 services from the DBB BR 111.

Both of these locomotives haul trains across the entire route which is punctuated by single-track running which create bottlenecks and limit the number of services running at one time.

    Additional Service Layers
    [IMG]

Two additional services layers will feature for players that have other Add-ons in their collection.

    These are:
    • BR 365 from Niddertalbahn, operating playable services between Garmisch and Mittenwald (5 playable services in total).
    • BR 103 from Linke Rheinstrecke, operating AI services at Innsbruck
    [IMG]

Players with the recently released Pfälzische Ludwigsbahn route Add-on will also be able to utilise a rail tour layer from Mittenwaldbahn featuring the BR 103 from Linke Rheinstrecke and the IC Coaches. Players can also create their own ÖBB 1020 rail tours on other routes with Free Roam or Formation Designer!

    Collectibles
Along the way there’ll be plenty of collectibles to find and tasks complete, including putting up stickers, replacing milk bottles and tidying up luggage racks and ski equipment.

In my opinion, Krocodile is a unique locomotive for the entire TSW series - just for this reason I want to buy it, kek

Now this one I am looking forward to. Iconic route, fantastic vintage loco and icing on the cake - the Silberlinge coaches. I can feel those hard plastic seats already! Plus TSG so it will be quality work.

Finally something to be positive about re TSW. Time for a “secret shopper” trip to Sainsbury’s on the bike to get a Steam Wallet gift card…

At last, something to get excited about. Always wanted a crocodile in the game. Screenshots look stunning.

Not much to say about this... except that I'm now even more hyped than before, if that's even possible! Don't think I've ever been this excited over an upcoming route

A bundle like this absolutely justifies the price tag in my eyes... in stark contrast to recently-released Ludwigsbahn, honestly. Which I haven't bought yet and won't buy in the forseeable future. I'll stick to my guns.

I was hoping the cream/blue 111 would get simple Indusi instead of PZB, and it seems like some wishes indeed do come true!
Also seeing the 365 getting more to do is quite nice, ok only 5 services, but better than nothing. On first glance it's pretty much identical to the 363, but it handles somewhat differently and (in my opinion) better.

Let's hope the overall quality of the route holds up to what these images promise!

the 365 handles better than the 363, as Ed added some fixes to it for Niddertalbahn.

I'm not questioning the value of the route itself. It might be very good.

But are we witnessing " price creep " here? At $44.99, this dlc, with tax, will cross the $50 mark, just like WCMLOS, which is something of a red line for me with TSW. Personally, I'm not prepared to pay more than the standard $40 for any route, no matter how good.

Besides that, at current exchange rates, the price should actually be about $41 anyway.

Not for the first time, I believe American players are being taken advantage of.

Dream route, of an entirely different level (Pfälzische Ludwigsbahn also has wonderful views). Here we're aiming straight at JT and Niddertalbahn territories ! Mind-blowing scenery, maniacally made stock and (hopefully) a good timetable. These are the routes we need :D! 9/10 at the moment (but I could give you a 10 if everything will be confirmed, TSG)!
PS. I'hoping for a future Schlierenwagen addon (they were used here at the time). Fingers crossed!

    This. Is. Absolutely. AMAZING!
The rolling stock selection is what initially sold me, but the scenery is absolutely brilliant too! Another W to TSG!
But I'm gonna have to wait until maybe my birthday before buying it, as €39.99 is too much for me :/

I suspect we are, actually. The £25 level routes are now costing £30, with the previous £30 price tag coming in at £33. And the panacea of a10% pre release purchase discount seems to have been well and truly dropped.

As said, I will make an exception for Mittenwaldbahn as I did for Shap, but if the Dutch route and Cardiff creep out to £33 then I will be waiting for a sale on those.

Anyhow, think my first action on the line will be to take a ride on those lovely hard seats in the Silberlinge. In fact that should be a requirement for part of the Journey mode!

I'm curious what's going on with US pricing as well. It's almost $48 with sales tax, which just seems way off the euro exchange rate. At least i've saved money by not buying the new German route from DTG.

Anyway, this looks fantastic as always from TSG. Looks like Feb 11th will be my first time jumping into TSW5 in 2025.

Never would have said this a couple of years ago, but 3rd-parties are the only thing keeping TSW interesting these days.

I wonder if it would be better at this point for DTG to just do an annual route pack/core update (kinda like how TSC used to be)? They could spend a whole year on 3 projects they're passionate about instead of this constant DLC dragon-chasing that seems to have sapped the energy from the devs and community alike.

Maybe there's not quite enough in the 3rd-party pipeline just yet, but it's getting there.

I dunno just feel like the current dynamic has just gotten so stale. Just imo though

Fantastic. I'm absolutely excited to see this route coming to fruition. Crocodiles, Silberlinge, classic IC coaches, ocean-blue beige 111, ...

Same here. I'm glad they're properly backdating the 111 instead of only reskinning it.

Of course, the by-now standard caveat applies that it needs to actually run properly on PS5, but given that JTs' WCMLoS runs properly despite being busy, I have confidence TSGs' Mittenwaldbahn will run properly as well.

The only caveat. Will certainly be posing that question in the preview stream Q&A and I would hope TSG are haranguing DTG about it too, so as to ensure sales don’t suffer.

My most anticipated TSW route ever. They could hardly get closer to "home" for me, unless they were to do the Ammergaubahn ca. 1970 (never happen)

Route looks great, I’m tempted to get it but will wait until I hear if it suffers from blurred texture issue on PS5.

Honestly I’d be happier if DTG released half the routes they do now but actually took the time to finish them and fix bugs after release instead of motoring full speed to the next thing.

I hope it will be OK, if only because of maybe just two additional layers......:) That would probably be the definitive disappointment from TSW5 :|

That’s what I’m hoping too, since it seems better on layers with less layers, but I did see some posting that the issue has even shown up in Mainz Koblenz.

I never encountered it there, or rather about twice on the BR103 cockpit but after a while it settled down .... but I don't ride this route much anymore ....
on the contrary, I reached Salzburg Rosenheim without the slightest problems, I removed the RSN BR363 and the Bremen Oldenburg map, which in total deactivated the AI BR425 and Tadgs layer and about two layers with BR363 (about seven services within the light handling freight trains)

Be realistic. If they'd do that, and thus spend twice the resources in each DLC, they also need to earn twice the amount to run a profit. That's either twice the sales or twice the price.

At least you dont have The Isle of Wight route in TSW as your local route (even if it is about 45 miles away from me). In TSC i have Bournemouth - Southampton (even though thats 4 miles from me..... lol.
Looking forward to see the preview and see whta the Krokodil is like. I know of a certain guy in the Trainz Community (RIP) who would love to see this and be casting his eye over it to see that its been done right.

That would be Barney! Great guy and his Crotrainz web site and short lived forum were a bit of a joint collaboration between myself and him, back in the day when I was also doing my own train sim website. He kind of fell off the radar (think he had a few health problems) and IIRC he tragically died in a car crash. Sorely missed - think he liked to be known as the “Sinister Fat Controller” (SFC) on the Trainz forum. He was also gutted when Auran, as they were then, were allocating avatars to player forum post totals and he got promoted from the Krokodil.

Anyhow sorry for slightly OT valedictory. Would have been nice if TSG could have worked a memory of Barney into a scenario or the route somewhere.

I mean when you keep releasing broken products you eventually lose customers and then end result is the same - less revenue. I used to buy every DLC but I haven't bought any of the last few just because I can't be bothered to spend money on stuff that ends up just frustrating me anyway. I'd rather pay more for working stuff if I had to.

Just watching the stream - what an absolutely amazing looking route, so much detail. The foliage work is superb, please can we have these foliage assets in all the new routes from now on please.
Best looking route in TSW to date imo, shows what can be done.

    Matts PC bluescreened.

this route had so much scenery. It basically caused the whole system to crash, unless he’s using another pc to stream.

OBB 1020 - I hope that the engine brake can be controlled somehow on the PS5 controller and that you won't have to chase it around with the cursor.

Just to clarify: it was the streaming PC that died, not Matt's gaming PC.
Matt is using a two PC setup to stream, one runs the game, the other streams. It was the latter that crashed, which wasn't related to the route or the game.

If I've read correctly, there will be about 25-30 trains per day, the rest of the services will be train detours and minor station transfers, etc.

I see that the flat windscreen has reflections of the clouds ‘through the train’ that plague TSW but I’m sure they could make it so that the screen has no reflections on the inside surface to remove this unwanted effect. It would improve the driving experience massively if they could make that one change as it’s unnatural and distracting having a stripe of clouds in front of you that wouldn’t be there in real life.

I'm curious how dense the AI traffic will be in Innsbruck.....

They already said on the stream that they were looking at removing the reflections in the first patch, that they hoped to release within one month of the route release.

Was about to buy the Mittenwaldbahn but I put it on hold for now. Not a 100 % buy anymore.

They said that the render draw distance is reduced on gen 9 Xbox Series X.
They did the same on Vorarlberg route and that route looks absolute horrible on the Xbox Series X with half cutted mountain scenery and permanent pop ins. Worst route up to this day!
Also concerned abtout blurry textures. You can not really justify a puchase on release day anymore nowdays due performance issues on almost every new released route - especially for consoles.

Sadly it appears the only way to guarantee the best experience going forwards is on a decently equipped PC. Sadly that's not viable for many people.

As Xbox puchase you could at least play it also on PC as long it is a play anywhere game.
But thats not a option for many, and the gamepass version does not run well with mods because a different folder structure. That takes away most of the advantage a PC has over a Gen 9 Console unless you rebuy your whole collection on Steam.

Almost every other Game on Xbox Series has different graphic settings for the series X and the series S.
They are handled different. Be it a lower resolution, lower locked FPS, or different render distance and LoD settings.
But not in TSW aside layering.

Is it so hard to put some effort into it to give the players the best possibe experience ?

Definitely going to get this at some point, but as has already been mentioned, those screen reflections on the Krokodil were really distracting. They did mention that they will look at patching it. But as any patches are down to DTG to test and release, I think I will wait until it’s actually done.

Absolutely stunning looking DLC though, both for the Scenery and Rolling Stock. TSG and Just Trains are showing what really can be done.

So will it be the same for PS5? Or is it only for Xbox?
