Visuals look GORGEOUS. And the steam physics are INSANE (alternating left-right chuffs? Residual steam chest pressure? Condensation?)

You cannot judge physics from this video. I think we should wait and see what the real thing will do.

Exactly. We all got wooed by the pre release presentation of the Jubilee and 8F in SOS then later the 4F on PFR. So much anticipation, so much disappointment.

I think "manual fireman" will work much better there than in TSW. The next level of simulation:

I came across this game yesterday on YouTube, they were demonstrating coal firing where you could actually see the fire and place coal where it's needed. The injectors worked too. This is just what I was expecting steam to be like in TSW. Unfortunately, we've been let down in that regard. The money I was saving for a PS5 might be better off going towards a gaming PC so I can support a developer who seems to have a passion for and an understanding of steam power.

    Its used Unreal Engine 5.
Very promising train simulator this. Never seen such fundamentally deep functions in physics sound etc
    With Unreal 5 awesome scenery.
Century of Steam is a physics-based multiplayer railroad simulator and strategy game. Build your route through beautiful landscapes, customize and operate your fleet of historic trains, discover the sights, sounds, and stories of railroading with industry-leading steam, firing, and audio simulation.

But it sticks to steam locomotives and right now narrow gauge steam locomotives in the US Rockies. (No consoles)
I hope we can drive in the old 1890 railways deep in the rookies such Alpine pass 11500 foot (map)
there are so many railways that were built and demolished already at the beginning of the 19th century

Hyce a well-known YouTuber who is also a I think real train driver (Colorado Railroad Museum)
Even in Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad seems he is involved in
He is involved in developing this simulator. so there is a lot of knowledge behind these developers
the videos they released show a lot how deep this simulator seems to be

Dead Hardly. I follow their patron site. they are doing so much, but it will probably take until winter before we see it.
But it turned out a little different than I thought from the beginning. It will be similar to Railroad online.
But as I experience much deeper design.
Both how trains, physics, sound, appearance, etc. and that they spend a lot of time getting to these maps
We get different maps from USA in beginning 19th century. One is in west Ponderosa (Lake Tahoe) Sierra Nevada in USA
Another is in east Keystone, Pennsylvania! Appalachia. and they are doing several others I think.

So we may not be able to make any real route from reality but so much else. This will be must have simulator for me

For me fortunately, in train simulation games it's more about how real the handling of the trains feels, than how the map corresponds to the real life counterpart. It only needs to be mapped realistically, but doesn't need to be in the exact 1:1 representation.

If it was modeled exactly by the real life counterpart, I'd be probably disappointed how different it looks from the one in real life (the feeling I usually have when I'm comparing TSW routes to real life photos from the same locations, while seeing there different terrain, buildings, infrastructure, foliage, details, etc.). Personally, it could even use a completely fictional map not based on real locations, but just feeling like something that could exist somewhere - this way I wouldn't be disappointed that the map looks somehow different than in real life.

Not only steam locos, but also diesel will be in the game. The video showcasing this should go public in a month.

That Alco looks nice but the problem is at this point do I even need another train game? Hardly touched Railroader since it first came out and SimRail, Run 8, Derail Valley all sit largely unplayed while I focus on TSW and maybe a bit of TSC.

WTH? I was stating a view regardless of how good or bad the game is, it’s joining a somewhat saturated market. Posting that is not against forum rules nor is there any reason why not. So can the attitude, and unofficial moderator act please. :)

Well, I for one could use a really detailed, accurate steam traction sim, which CoS promises to be

No, it will take some time. Adding diesels looks nice but it is kind of scope creep and not good for a release on short term.

Not a huge steam person, but I may pick it up for that old diesel. If the Yukon map is anything like the Yukon railway setting that diesel actually comes from, it'll be awesome. Plus, I'd like to support Hyce since he is a passionate teacher in the community.

It would be great if this ever becomes a, you know, actual published product and not just a really cool tech demo.

I do feel like that somedays but come on... it has some very big names behind it.
Sure it'll take time... I'm expecting no sooner than Christmas of 27... a lot is there to be done.

But on the other hand, what they have shown so far in over 2 years has incredible depth and clearly shows that they're really passionate about it. So considering how much is riding on it - I'll eagerly wait for it :)

I think there's a valid criticism there... but that does contrardict the moaning adage we always get of "there's just no competitor to TSW to get them to do a better job!" If there's so many other train games.... isn't that the competition? And isn't TSW still just chugging along?
Each one was going to "give TSW a run for its money" and while yes they do...they also aren't TSW so a lot of people keep coming back.
I suspect this will be similar.
TSW for better or worse is your "load it up after work quick for a fast run" game.
Derail valley, Run 8, Simrail, etc... are all more in depth but also.... more work.
TSW is also on console, which again I don't think Century of Steam will be, just like the others aren't.
(I think Railroads Online made the jump to XBox)

I'll definitely check this out because Hyce is a great expert on locos and the team seems very knowledgeable, plus the videos posted look amazing. However, I suspect just like Derail Valley, etc I'll play it occasionally and keep coming back to TSW for a quick, simple "easy" run to relax after work.
And we'll still get the same people complaining TSW doesn't have steam because this won't be on console as far as I know.
Just like the rest of the railroad games.

It looks awesome in many ways and they have good plans, but I am afraid they aim so much for a perfect product that it will never be finished. I rather have a product in my hands than something beautiful I cannot play with. Also keep in mind this game is very different from TSW. It is targetting narrow gauge steam and diesel, so it is old stuff and many TSW players do not seem very interested in the really old stuff.

On the positive side, they aren't doing it for money, they're doing it for passion. So, there's no rush to release "new stuff" on a deadline. The dev team have other jobs. So, when we get something it won't be rushed and won't be expanded just to make a buck. It'll be the package they WANT to release. Unlike TSW it's also like you said narrowly focused (no pun intended) on a very short timeframe and a few locomotives on just a map or two so it's far less scope to handle.
The initial release might just be one map and two or three locomotives so that's a single TSW DLC of work (that they're not rushing on) so I can see turning out well... eventually.
It won't have the reach that TSW does since it's so narrowly focused and focused on "realism" (not to mention no console plans) but it'll appeal to the same people playing Derail Valley, Railroads Online, Run 8, etc.
There's nothing wrong with a rail community project that isn't a huge seller but is just for the community.
That's what those other three games really are. They were never huge sellers, but they have big fans in the community.
From what I've seen they have the game working pretty well.
I'd give it another year, but it will release in some form....albeit probably just one map and a couple of locomotives for starters.

As far as I remember they were showing in video logs for the past 2 years their content on I think 3 different maps. As for the locomotives and wagons/cars they presented plenty of different models and variants allowing various customization (in one of logs we were told how some of the locos will allow thousands of combinations). With this even one loco with tens of combinations in the game will be already more than a single loco DLC for TSW. In TSW another train combination/livery would be simply released as another DLC.
