i am looking for a way to get more than 1000 layers or a work around to get certain decals/stickers as 1 layer.
i would like to make all stickers and details as good as possible and then some stickers alone can contain almost 100 layers that you have to duplicate for the other side. with this way you are very limited and would really like to finish this livery.
i still have a lot to do and already know that i will come up short ! :(

i also notice a bug where it does not let me group layers anymore. luckily that did not cause too many problems. hope someone can help me!

I don't know why that grouping bug happens - it happens to me too. Very annoying.

You cannot bypass the 1000 layer limit at the moment. It is unfortunate, but unless you are able to use the projection settings to paint on both sides at the same time, you will have to simplify the livery.

and what is projection setting then? sorry i just started using livery designer and this is my second livery.
but yes indeed as you say i kept some things simple and cant go into detail on the small stickers unfortunately.
but i finished it even though i'm not 100% satisfied, it is what it is due to the limits of the game

If you select a layer and go to options>projection settings you'll find two sliders. If you set both of these to 100% you can project the layer through to the other side of the train.

For example, I have selected the yellow front of this livery and have projected it to the other side. That way, both cabs have the yellow front using only one layer.

I have just seen this. I have made many liveries including the days of 300 limit. Because of this I found many ways to save decals. You may find especially with UK liveries they can be done within the 1000 decal limit. I think the problem you have which has no work around is the high usage of text. Depending on the text size then some once spelled out can not be seen. You may be using 20 letters for nothing.
So for anything that is low visibility when sized down I will replace with a number of different decals that would do the Job. One layer replacing 20 letters. Even use mirror tools if the small letters are equal position either side.

Here is an example of doing small text but not using letters to save on decals. IMG_2253.jpeg IMG_2254.jpeg IMG_2255.jpeg IMG_2257.jpeg IMG_2256.jpeg
As you can see I have used certain decals as an alternative to text. Yes I could have added all the small details but why when it won’t be seen. I can still create the effects I want and save on decals for work that is seen and so keeping more decals for that work.Even for weathering as these can take a lot up.

Something else I found helped out is using the smallest amount of decals in the first stages of layering. For Hand rails as an example some use a very to complete the job. For me it could be just one or two. So by saving in the early stages you will maximise your limit for the more intense stages such as logos and lettering.

Treat every decal like it’s Gold. Even if I have 1000 decal I’ll still push to save because I may need only one at the very end.
So yes, make them count and find ways to save in places you can.

Good Advice on the mirroring options. But for yellow I don’t use a decal. Just paint the whole loco Warning Yellow and the when covering you side mirror. Especially on a 66. The front roof line can be quite hard. So by working from the front over the side decal place a decal on the roof. From the fronts. No need for any Yellow decal. They get in the way. One or two side decals and two for roof and it’s done. This can also help when covering hand rails done from the top down. The front roof decals will cover it all. And form a base line for any work that may over lap on to the roof.

    Hope this makes sense.

I have that same problem. What I found was if you go into the projection settings it has usually slipped. It can happen even if you do repeat grouping whilst moving from original position. If you have a small decal on the work whilst enlarged it’s ok, but once you group and size down anything that is small may become a pixel issue and so can’t select when grouping again. You find if you delete that problem decal you should then be able to try again and fully group. If not then you may have one or two decals in the group not happy where they are. Over manipulation of a shape seems to have some effect on the problem too.

Because of this I try limit my grouping and avoid small decals that again once sized down can create the issue. Don’t get me wrong even when working and re grouping from a original work position I will have the problem arise for no real explanation. Yet by taking small measures as I do then I have limited the problem as I no longer have as many issues as in the past.

Mate just looking at your work. Damn you placed some real detail, and it’s just unfortunate that like I mentioned in a separate comment. UK locos and US locos are fine due to hardly any information than like that seen on EU units. This is why I have never done a EU unit. To much lettering that can leave you short for other work. And I totally understand where your coming from and your frustration.

I only now after 4 or 5 years am going to do such liveries such as Union Pacific’s SD70ACe 1943. Back in the TSW3 days then I would have never have done the loco justice. Now we have 1000 then for me right now I feel I can finally approach with some sense of ease that it will be done to a high standard within the decal limit.

So again I understand your frustration, if I can I’ll try advise as much as I can. But like I say with the units your working on they take a lot just for the lettering. I’m sure when the tech moves on or spaces are found then we may get an increase. We jumped from 300 to a 1000 so it’s achievable.

Fingers crossed it will increase again soon.✌

Thanks mate for all the feedback! I was not logged in for a while and now I come back because I made some more liveries. It is getting better and better in saving and working smarter and I also have less trouble with the bug now but sometimes it still happens at the strangest moments.

I have a very hard time to get this tanker realistic and neat. As you said the European rail locos and wagons have a lot of letters and information and that makes it fun for me to recreate. This was a GATX livery that I am now converting to a NACCO tank wagon.

I also think it's a shame that the VTG logo is only in blue, I think I'm going to recreate it in white as well since I want to make a series of tankers that you often see on the Dutch and German railways and also for loco's :D i love the cargo stuff
