Looking at various options to force Win 11 to install on my PC. One of the issues is that all hard drives need to be UEFI and switch to UEFI Only rather than UEFI and Legacy in BIOS boot options. However in order to do that need to convert the hard drives from MBR to GPT using a built in Windows utility. Has anyone done this and did it lose any data? Thanks.
I did it (Windows 10 Pro, ASUS B550 motherboard) without a problem. I do have a Win 11-capable PC, though. Maybe obvious, but just to ask: Does your system's BIOS support UEFI in the first place, and is it current? BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
Well I successfully converted the C drive to GPT format without any grief (Disclaimer: Your experience may vary). Now just need to overcome the TPM thing which I think can be done with a utility called Rufus which puts the ISO onto a USB stick and overcomes that final check. Might have a go this evening.
After a couple of (user error) checks and delays yesterday evening, now attempting to update to Win 11!
Well the first attempt got stuck with the PC not rebooting when Windows finished the file mashing. So backed out and cancelled. Attempt two seems to have got past that stage, rebooted and now gathering and working on updates. So fingers and toes firmly crossed I haven’t bricked the sodding thing.
Final report. Windows 11 successfully installed on the second attempt. Now comes the bedding in period, critically whether the updater works correctly and doesn’t get blocked by further hardware checks. So a certain amount of satisfaction here, though knowing my luck doing all that M$ will relent come October and either extend the life of Windows 10 for another year or two, or drop the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Either way, there’s a certain irony that a company formerly run by the man who wants to save the planet, is taking actions that could see millions of still perfectly serviceable PC’s to be scrapped.
yep... my PC is i7 6700K quad core 4GHz I think, 32GB DDR4 RAM and 1080 8GB... an SSD for Win 10 and programs and a classic HDD for the rest (used to also have additional SSD, but that one died suddenly like a year ago)... bought in 2017! still a beast that can run TSW and Space Marine 2 and others just fine, tho understandably not on ultra or anything, but still nice back then it cost me like 2100 € with everything, and it is crazy that nowadays that would barely get you top tier GeForce card lol, so I hope it holds on for a year or two or three... until I get a job in Austria that actually pays decent wage I am delaying the upgrade, but I guess one day I will feel adventurous and confident and try the damn thing
