I have it, i think it's quite a good route, thought the 385 isn't great with the sounds. And I personally don't like the 385 very much. But it's a decent route. I believe I waited until a sale was on. It's not worth the full price. But hey, if you think you want it get it
I would say sale only. The route isn’t bad by Rivet standards but the 385, nice exterior model but awful sounds and, while not the dev’s fault, it has the worst tiniest forward view of any train in the TSW collection. The route is better with either the Class 380, albeit the over powerful brakes or the Scotrail 158 pack from SHG.
It's alright. I barely played it for the longest time and then Skyhook gave the route new life with their timetable upgrades. I barely drive the 385 but I've got plenty of other options and the 158 is always fun to drive.
Bear with me on this. In my streams I get a lot of questions regarding the routes I'm driving if they are new releases etc. I get the is it worth it?, do I think its worth it? Do I or would I recommend it? *My reply would be as a rhetorical question. If you were to buy this route or dlc at full price, would you play it enough and enjoy it to justify paying full price for it? Or can it wait for a sale? Before becoming an Ambassodor, that was my mantra, that was what I worked too. I always watched the Dovetail streams and some of the other ambassadors' streams before making up my mind. Sometimes it wasn't easy. I think one of the only routes, where in my release livestream I said "I wouldn't buy this full price, I would wait for a sale" was Rivet's Fife Circle route. With no disrespect to Rivet at all. At that time when I was viewing it I didn't think it was worth the price that was being asked. It just looked unfinished and in some places bland. There's still stuff wrong with the railtour update they did that still has not been addressed. But since the skyhook 158 timetable has been released its a lot better. But first impressions........ it was terrible. *The reason why I say what I say is because, you are the one paying for it. Its your hard earnt cash that you have saved up for or sweated at work for (over the past month). Personally I like the Scotrail Express route. I just wish it was 47/7's and DBSO's , Highland large logo 37's, class 20's, 26's 27's and ETHEL 25's that were running. Hentis
The sounds on the 385 are hideous, and the braking sounds can be heard in cabs and coaches of other trains much further away than must be prototypical. If I disable it as a layer now, the route will seem quieter as I’ve played with it as a layer for so long. So the 1 thing I’d recommend is, if you are playing skyhooks new timetable with all the other trains, turn off the 385 layer from the get go
Absolutely not, no. If you were on PC I'd say maybe and download a few mods to make the experience better, but as is just purely out of the box? No. ScotRail Express is by far the worst UK route in TSW. It's slightly better than when it released, but key word is slightly. I find the route itself to be...okay, if not underwhelming compared to it's real life counterpart. The timetable is what really irks me. Services in game do not follow the real life stopping patterns at times and other services will be formed of 4 coaches instead of the prototypical 8 and some services are missing entirely! As for the 385, I can't stand Rivet's representation of it despite liking the units in real life. Internal lights will turn off when the master key is taken out, BIL lights on the side of the train will go out at times despite the doors being open and the door buttons themselves will still light up despite the doors being locked. There's also a nasty bug where the train will brake by itself when passing through a neutral section. The sounds are just as bad. The initial whine when departing a station is correct, but most of the other sounds do not sound like a real 385. The running sounds in particular are horrendous. Rivet even said ages ago when the route released that they'd record sounds from a 385, that has yet to happen and likely never will. If you absolutely MUST have something Scottish, pick up Cathcart Circle instead, or even grab Fife Circle. Fife Circle may get a lot of criticism, but I at least get more out of that than ScotRail Express.
Like I said in my post already have all other scotrail addons, that’s the only reason I’m even considering buying it, having incomplete collections pains me specially for the Country I live in
So you did, silly me for skimming through posts and not reading things properly But yeah, ScotRail Express isn't worth it honestly. Best just skipping it unless it goes on a REALLY heavy sale...
I'll say this. Do what you want. Form an opinion, using the responses given, weigh the negatives and positives, and decide for yourself whether or not its worth it. Don't not buy it just because people say not to, after all that's what they think.
That’s what I’m currently doing, I’m quite thankful for everyone telling me their opinions it does help
Skyhook has made the route a bit better now. It’s busier now. Before that it was completely dead. I’m a big fan of Scottish routes and have them all. It’s not the worst route in TSW. People complain about the scenery in this route but to be honest with you it’s not a very scenic route in real life neither. Aloooot of Green once you get away from Edinburgh. It’s still a chilled out relaxing run though and it’s high speed most of the way if you like that type of run. The worst thing i hate about this route is the 385 sounds. They are very bad and it’s a shame because that train sounds amazing in real life. Apparently it’s going to get looked into at some point but that’s been said for 2 years now… Like others have said. It’s up to you. I don’t think it’s a waste of money but if you really want to you can wait for a sale.
Personally one of my least favorite routes. The 385 isn't fun to drive at all IMO, the sounds are weird (just compared to other TSW stuff, i've never heard one IRL), and the timetable is poor. Skyhook's timetable is better and it's an improved drive in either the 380 or 158, but i'd still prefer driving those trains on other routes tbh. Deep sale territory IMO.
If you already have the 158, and the route is on discount, you should get it. Only use the 158 timetable, where the HST, the 380 and the Azuma also layer in.
I find it’s alright and the Skyhook timetable is nice, albeit not particularly realistic. The run in and out of Edinburgh is the highlight for me - looks pretty decent. The rest is a bit bland but possibly that could be accurate to real life.
Realistic or not, that new timetable just about 'fixed' this route to the point where it is actually worth it. Same as with Fife Circle, once Skyhook's 158 timetable releases.
Well after thinking it through, I’m going to pick it up and give it a try and well if I don’t like it I will just refund it
Update I bought scotrail express and tried out a service with the class 385 and man I’ve never seen tsw 5 run so bad before on the Xbox series X, like Mittenwaldbahn and west coast main line 1980s both run well but Scotrail express didn’t for some reason. Anyways I got a refund so alls good
It's really not that deep. It's 35 quid (euros) maximum. You aren't applying for a loan for a brand new car
But not everyone has £35, Dollars or euros spare to throw at a new route / DLC every other week. Hentis
don't buy mountains routes on xbox is waste of money. xbxs is limited and xbxx is chocked by one lazy dtgs file shared with xbxs
