im sorry, but 20 quid is a disgrace. i normally arent all that negative, but this is an exception. if it was a sodor route, then fair enough, that would have been fine. but 20 quid for a locomotive pack, which is so simple? honestly crazy. this should be £12.99 at the max im out.
It’s actually insane that a loco add-on—mind you, not even the island of sodor—is going to cost £20. It’s genuinely baffling what Dovetail is thinking here. I doubt many core fans who got into trains because of Thomas, would even consider it until a sale which is a bit disappointing for them, and think about the fact they’re aiming to attract a younger audience to the game, I highly doubt parents are going to casually shell out £20 for a single DLC, let alone £30 for the bundle, just because little George heard about the game and wants to add to his thomas collection. It seems like DTG are completely out of touch with who they’re actually trying to sell this to.
This trailer was your first look at Thomas the Tank Engine in action, and we'll be looking to share more of what this pack will feature and include as we get closer to release. We're excited, and just a reminder that unlike previous add-ons, the gameplay will be unique and story-driven, which we can't wait to show you more about.
Man, they could've really added some animated eye movement to the poor fella. His face is completely static. Looks like a bad Trainz mod.
Price is a joke. Maybe if you had upped your game and created a little island route based on Sodor then it would be maybe worth that. But no imagination, no vision. Just a pointless add on at a rip off price.
Some Thomas mods have animated eyes on Trainz. Probably it’ll come to TSW as a new feature in a gameplay pack for £19.99.
Hmmm $24.99 for 5 locos and scenarios. Sounds about right for that cost. Plus you get TSW 5 AND WSR AND Thomas for $39.99. Well WSR is currently $24.99 ITSELF. So you can buy WSR at regular price and you get Thomas and TSW 5 bundle for $15.00. That's as much as "Cargo Line Vol 1" and there's a lot LESS content there, plus it's not a pricey copyright. Not sure why people think this is a lot of money. It's actually a very sweet deal if you're new to TSW (as the intended audience would be)
Its not something Im personally interested given that its featured on a route that I dont really enjoy any way (due to the realistic speed limits rather than the quality as personally I think after Liams update its a really good looking route). Id much rather have seen an Island of Sodor DLC which Id probably have been tempted in. But all said and done I hardly think Im (and most of the forum) likely to be the target audience and if DTG think this is a price point which will entice new comers to the hobby then fair enough.
As someone who plays on a series X, mostly UK routes and with safety systems etc. turned on and who finds it more comfortable to play than playing in my PC, can I ask what exactly is your problem with people like me (who is far from being a "kiddie") who play on console? All I see whenever you post is you bashing console players for some reason and just want to understand what your specific problem is with people like me?
Honestly, I am worried about the direction DTG is taking this sim in recently….firstly Thomas….dont remember anyone asking for this and secondly TSW:VR…both of these really should not be a costed DLC but integrated into TSW5 for free.
Fair point, but that would also cost a lot more adding a whole new route to it. People are already blowing their tops over the reasonable price it is.
Quite a few announcements over the last week. I'm most looking forward to the 'Thomas & Friends visit Newport Sims' with the ROG Class 37 layering on to drag him, Annie and Clarabelle there...
Just ignore people like him. They like to think they're superior and more "adult" than console players just because they're on PC.
Don't get the inside joke, but it could be amusing to find fun things to do in Free Roam. I expect more than one person to start producing their own "mini series" too... some kid friendly and some not....
Yeah I really dont get the animosity from segments of the community tbh. I subscribe to Sky Sports solely for the NFL & Rugby League, but I dont get angry at sky when they extend their Premier League license, even though in reality Im more than likely subsidising those who solely watch soccer on Sky given we both buy exactly the same package each month and Im darn sure in the UK TV rights to the NFL and RL super league combined cost sky far far less than rights to the PL. Companies in all sectors diversity and try to appeal to a wide range of tastes and I dont see how DTG are doing anything different with Thomas tbh
£20 really isn't an acceptable price for this. £30 isn't a good price for the bundle either. Thomas and Diesel will be about as interesting to drive as a vitamin gummy is to look at. The Class 47 and 09 are very dated. The route itself is nice, but you can already get that for the same price as the Thomas DLC. While £20 is still too much for the route, it's a much easier pill to swallow than £20 for uncanny valley Thomas the Tank Engine. For £20 you can the Caledonia Works 4F, which is worth the money. Or you could have got the Ultimate Edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 when it was last on sale. Or a meal for two in Wetherspoon. Four Waitrose meal deals. Twenty items priced £1 in Poundland. BeamNG.drive. Forza Horizon 5 on sale.
You can get half of a game that came out in 2018. That's not really selling your case there. That's still a bargain. All you managed to say was you don't like it. Not that it wasn't worth the price. Which is fine...it's your opinion.... I just hope it does well to bring a lot more people into TSW and trainfanning in general.
You didn't read my post properly. "Or you could have got the Ultimate Edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 when it was last on sale." That particular edition was last on sale at £17.99, with the base game even less. When the choice is buying the best version of perhaps the best game ever made, or a single DLC with two very simple trains that don't fit into the game at large that costs twice what it should, which is really the best one to pick? I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that either the bundle or the DLC are a bargain. Thomas and Diesel will be novelty items. They will challenge Kuju trains for simplicity and cannot be used on any route in TSW without sticking out like a sore thumb. They have no value, even if you look at them as two £10 loco packs. You're better off downloading the free ones for TS... Which also has the Isle of Sodor on it, made beautifully in the style of the Railway Series books. The 'story' will barely count as one. It'll just be Thomas narrating what he's doing, or some other dribble that might as well not be there. "Today I'm driving to Minehead. It's a lovely, warm day, only spoilt by the great dark cloud in the distance caused by my own existence." His face doesn't even move - if they had fully animated faces I'd actually say it's a cool feature. Obviously the Mattel license will have increased the cost, but a decent portion of the pack is just reskinning existing things in the game. I'd appreciate it if you could give your own view on why the DLC is worth £20, because I can't see it at all.
a) No, I didn't misunderstand. A game that's 50% off is half the cost... ie "half a new game." b) Your sense of value is your OWN perspective, which is fine to a point, but doesn't count when applying to OTHER peoples' sense of value. For YOU personally yes, it's not worth it. That's fine. However, the people that want a Thomas (and the other content and scenarios) will have use for it. Using words like "dribble" and "cannot be used on other routes" are entirely your opinion of Thomas, not those of the target audience. I could say the same thing for any number of DLC I don't happen to personally like. I could say "well the BR 101 is useless because you can only use it on German routes and I don't care for those." That insultingly ignores the German train players and makes it far too personal. The value of DLC is not just about what you personally think... it's about what the intended audience thinks. People who like Thomas are going to value it because it's Thomas. That's not a negative... it's a positive. Just like German train lovers won't think German trains are a "negative" because they're German, or because they are used on German routes. You are prejudging the story and content without having experienced it. I tried to keep it simple and objective. The price is not high. It's comparable to similar content on TSW, and the bundle is far less for what you get. Getting WSR, TSW and Thomas in one bundle is a bargain...again, based on what those individual things cost and compare to other DLC. It's not my fault it's not what you personally wanted. It's not anyone's job to make you personally happy and just you. Your rant is entirely self-focused and lacking any larger perspective or consideration for others experiences. You have a right to your opinion of course, as narrow as it is but it's just not applicable to the game as a whole because you are acting like all players but you don't exist and have no bearing on what DTG produces. Other people like things outside of your personal opinions and their money is just as good as yours. Why act shocked when DTG makes things for someone other than you?
This dlc had better be perfect, no bugs, no stuttering or crashing. If it's not, the toys will be flying out of the prams and you'll be able to hear all the foot stamping wherever you live.
I hope that's all still there. Might encourage them to fix the issues we're having. Last thing anyone needs is angry child, all it does is annoy the parents who then complain about wasting money on something that's broken. And the last thing DTG need to hear is that people are wasting their money on something so basic.
Yes it will be like those stupid Emily Turner chapters on ECML. Basic text popping up on screen, not even the actual NPC characters speaking or moving. Completely ignoring the real railway operating principles. As I said previously this should have come with its own little route, maybe condense part of Sodor into the Isle Of Portland or one of the Scottish isles, as they did with Phorum Peninsula in TSC. Then preferably sold as a separate game outside the main TSW franchise. In the meantime, yesterday’s grand update did absolutely nothing to stop the stuttering and sound squelching which even occurred having a quick run on Harlem. I wouldn’t normally wish ill on any DLC but I really hope this tanks for DTG and they see what a silly waste of resources the whole idea was or that, well, it should have been done in a much better way.
Thomas does look like a toy. Will it/he also operate like a toy? A one-handle steam locomotive, suited for thumbstick operation in the hands of 3 year olds and up? TTTE hardly is an incentive for DTG to up their steam locomotive simulation or invent young child oriented game play on this already simple and boring heritage route. I agree with most others that stipulate Thomas and his soon to arrive purchasable friends need their own magical Island of Sodor route, and a separate game alltogether on the consoles.
I can't help but wonder, if dtg did develop a game just for Thomas and friends, and it was a big hit among children (I believe it will be) and it becomes a good source of income, without constant complaint on the forums. Where would that leave tsw? Less and less dev time until its eventually shelved?
There are two slightly humorous things about this to me. The first is that DTG & it’s defensive coalition seem to only be able to say “this isn’t meant for you guys”, yet it was the pinnacle announcement for a reveal event focused primarily on DTGs core userbase. The second thing is that DTG refute a lot of popular community requests because ‘we don’t know how well it would sell’ & ‘we’re not sure we could do it properly’ - in response to things like more BR content, more TGV content etc. Yet a half baked idea for an all new type of content is apparently some market trend proven product?
I would imagine that the Thomas and Friends license comes at quite a cost and that may explain the price. Most heritage railways in the UK stopped hosting Thomas events due to the costs and restrictions placed on holding them.
Mattel approached DTG. DTG agreed. Why wouldn't they, if it means more money in the pot? Just makes sense that they'd say yes to something like this, something that'll guarantee a lot of money. Whether or not any good comes of it remains to be seen. I can already imagine it becoming yet another fire and forget DLC that won't be talked about by the end of the year.
Being hyped up as the grand reveal was a big mistake. Nothing to say against that. Although I from a business kind of perspective it was worth being the grand reveal in DTG's eyes. Fact is that it is a world famous partner for a rather small game developer. And this is huge. But yeah, a fictional loco shouldn't have been hyped up that much as the grand reveal in a community which is very nitpicky about mismatches between reality and addon. Someone on Discord said once that the 20th reveal (Thomas) and 1st (Mildmay) should have swapped. I agree with that opinion. One thing is the concern whether a DLC would be successful with the already founded playerbase. Just like any other business, Focus and DTG apparently have some disclosed sale and active player statistics as well as poll results. The latter being less important, but still worth to take an eye on. Perhaps this data is what explains why we have less of something specific and more of something generic. In special regard to famous Thomas, business heads assess the risk for a commercial fail as rather unlikely due to its high popularity and rather an opportunity to gain a lot of new people into the franchise. Nobody said it will succeed, but it is worth an experiment, if not for the yet founded community, then for maybe gaining new costumers. I'm really not someone who wouldn't want something more special in Train Sim World (for example, I also suggested more steam engines in the polls) but I'm just stating plain facts here and to be honest they do make sense to me, yet I wish that DTG will also do a bit more experiments - just like currently with Thomas - on special stuff (steam, older eras, foreign countries) in the future. But statistics and economical risk come not well for us.
Hell no. Mildmay is tiny. Thomas will likely sell a lot more, it reaches a huge potential community and it's a major property that everyone knows. That is the definition of your "grand reveal." A tiny feeder line by comparison is rather niche and small. Thomas at least ranks up there with unlocking another country like China or India. Even the Netherlands is... okay.... but not a huge NEW market. Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East haven't been tapped at all for a game based on "World" railroads. We have exactly two continents covered...and rather shallowly at that. The amount of audience out there for TTTE is global. They've had huge events from Japan to Kenya to Brazil. It was never my thing, and only recently made it to the States (relatively) but I truly don't think the naysayers understand the impact the franchise has had around the world.
