Our Springtime Sprint continues with the arrival of more ‘Sprinters’ in Train Sim World! Cardiff City Network releases on 18th March!

    Croeso i Gymru!
Cardiff City Network is the first Welsh route to come to Train Sim World, along with a new, licensed operator in Transport for Wales, or TfW (Trafnidiaeth Cymru).

This urban network style route Add-on runs along separate branches with the TfW branded Class 150 DMU, along with the 1-car Class 153 ‘Sprinter’ which makes its debut in Train Sim World.

    The Route

TSW5 Cardiff City Network Route Map-01.jpg

Much of Cardiff’s modern-day railway network owes itself to the rich history of South Wales coal mining. Lucrative efforts to harvest the Earth’s black gold necessitated the use of railway lines through the valleys, and as such, many lines began spurring out from the soon-to-be Welsh capital and linking down to the docks.

With the passage of time, and a growing populous, the scene became much more passenger-orientated and today, the city area is known as the “Valleys & Cardiff Local Routes” – an urban network of lines operated by Transport for Wales.

This route Add-on features multiple branches and 19 stations stemming from the heart of the city and two principal stations: Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street.
    These branches are:
    • The Coryton Line, terminating at Coryton
    • The Merthyr Line, as far as Radyr
    • The City line, terminating at Radyr
    • The Butetown branch line, terminating at Cardiff Bay
    • The Penarth branch, terminating at Penarth

These branch lines all intersect and connect with one another around Cardiff’s periphery, with iconic landmarks such as the Principality Stadium prominently placed next to the railway line. Canton Depot also features, hosting the trains included and providing ECS gameplay on top of the passenger timetable.

Each of the stations are adorned with TfW’s branding, including bilingual signage in English and Welsh, which emphasises the pride and passion with which the Welsh language is spoken and used within the capital city.

    The Trains
    Class 153 ‘Sprinter’

New to Train Sim World is the 1-car Class 153 diesel multiple unit. These trains were originally 2-car Class 155 trains that were split up for use on rural branch lines and between towns and cities across most of Britain. Their original allocations saw action in the north, Midlands and east, before further use as far south as Devon and Cornwall and more recent use up in Scotland by ScotRail.

This makes the Class 153 perfect for some Free Roam action across other British Train Sim World route Add-ons in your collection. The unit is compatible with other DMU trains in the game, including other members of the Sprinter family. It can be coupled and used with Class 150/170/158/142 and other Class 153s.

The unique nature of their creation from a 2-car unit means that the cab ends differ quite significantly in size. The original cab end is bigger, with a small cab positioned where the connection would have been to its paired unit. The result is an asymmetrical layout, notable from the outside with the position of the exterior doors.

The Class 153 will have working suspension animations, driveshaft animations and brake pad animations and comes in two variants: a Class 153/3 full PRM-compliant railcar and the Class 153/9 ‘lite’ PRM-compliant railcar.

    Class 150/2 ‘Sprinter’

More familiar to Train Sim World players will be the Class 150 DMU, seen previously in the West Cornwall Local Add-on.
In addition to its new paint job in TfW livery, the Class 150 has had significant changes to the exterior and interior model as well as the suspension animations, driveshaft animations and brake pad animations also seen on the Class 153.
The full list of changes to the model are as follows:
    Exterior

    • Re-liveried to the TfW livery, plus many other texture improvements
    • Modified antenna to reflect the 150/2 version
    • New Door controls
    • Electronic destination board
    • New headlight design
    Cab
    • Numerous control changes and component modifications to the cab
    • Addition of GSM-R Radio
    • Addition of TPWS Controls
    • Lighting updates
    • Texture changes to reflect new cab variant
    Passenger interior
    • Passenger compartments retextured to reflect TfW branding, labels and information signs.
    • Many model modifications to reflect new layout such as additional plug sockets, bike racks, and new bathrooms, and other changes.
    • New interior door controls
    • Additional guard panels at rear doors
    • New furniture and seating layout
    • New door animations to match new audio recordings
    Timetable, Scenarios and Gameplay
    [IMG]
With separate branch lines, Canton Depot and two trains to operate, there’s plenty of gameplay to get busy with and around 500 playable services.

This includes services along each of the branch lines:

    • Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay
    • Cardiff Central to Penarth / Cogan
    • Cardiff Queen Street / Central to Coryton.
    • Services to Radyr along both Merthyr and City Lines
    • ECS shunts around Cardiff Central
Services representative of TfW rolling stock not featured in the Add-on are included, using the Class 150 and 153, such as those run by Class 197s, 231s and Class 67 locomotives in real life. Some of these services run out of the map via Cogan south of the city or Heath High Level north of the city, representing Barry Island – Rhymney services.

Some Class 150 and Class 153 services will also feature Conductor Mode, with functioning Guard panels similar to other British rolling stock.

There will be 5 Scenarios, called: Welsh Translation, Branch Line Breakdowns, Snow Storms and St David's Day Celebration.

A note for players on 8th generation consoles:

After reviewing performance we've amended the timetable to provide a suitable experience for those on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This timetable will not feature any additional service layers outside of the playable 150 and 153 services.

Train Sim World 5: Cardiff City Network route Add-on will release on 18th March for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £29.99/€35.99/$39.99

You can catch the Preview Stream on Wednesday 12th March over on YouTube and Twitch

The release of Cardiff City Network forms part of our Springtime Sprint, with other releases, sales and preview streams taking place throughout the rest of March!

Let's have a preview on consoles please or at least honest feedback and answers for whether there will be
    Blurry textures
    Low fps
    Z fighting
    Decent draw distance

Whoever does the stream when it comes to it should have these answers to hand, even a bit of prerecorded footage they could show us.

That ballast. The same seen on WCML South…

this is a clear indication of rivet games activity.

Thank you Jamie. Good to hear it will release on Tuesday 18th March.

Mr Southern Driver, l hope there is no Rivet involvement or l won’t be buying it until it’s on a decent sale price.

Shame you couldn't hear the engine sounds properly over the TSW music.
However, it doesn't look too bad but will wait for preview streams.

JD has confirmed that the 150/2 has had its sounds updated. Very good. Those WCL sounds were horrific.

What are the lengths of the runs.

Where do they run from/ to? Stupid question maybe.

    Max speed limit?

it still sounds horrible but to be fair to DTG it might be an old trailer before they updated the sounds we will see in the preview stream

This doesn't look promising at all, the textures look dodgy some are even replicating to what we saw in WCML and an art style produced by a certain third party developer. Hearing the Class 150 sounding almost exactly the same as WCL is enough to cancel my first day purchase. It's a shame I was looking forward to the route and loved the route concept, but is once again plagued by DTG's incompetence.

Exactly this. It’s all good showing us the preview on a high spec PC, but it is often completely not a representation of what console players experience.

Please arrange some form of preview for Consoles

The issue with the sounds was down to how the 150 was scripted, so you got the wrong sounds at the wrong time.

    It is a Rivet route.
US bus in CH colours on a UK route?
The bus, which Rivet used on all the Swiss routes, despite (for Switzerland) the doors on the wrong side.
    This route is 100% Rivet

The sounds on the wcl 150 were from armstrong. The issue was the physics

So, Cardiff Central sees about 20 transport for wales services an hour on average so that's about 400 services (including AI but not ECS movements) a day. How many do people think we'll get?

If it's a real timetable I would guess we should get 200 playable with 100-ish in or out of depot moves plus 10-20 short freight services so 310-ish? What's the betting it's about 75?

DTG do need to answer the question of Rivet involvement imo. There needs to be some trust built back up between them and the customer base.

I want to like this route and I want to buy it but there are alarm bells ringing for me as well. Some of the video seemed quite choppy/laggy? I'm not a fan of having to buy WCMLS for the freight layers either (I steered clear of that with the state its in).

I want to like this, it's a DMU route in Wales! It ticks the boxes! But I'm just not convinced as of yet. Will have to see what happens in the roadmap stream and the preview stream honestly

That’s me out then. No confidence whatsoever in anything Rivet produces.

I remember an atrocious delivery company called White Arrow, they were so bad they changed their name to Hermes because of the bad publicity. They were just as bad as before so they changed their name again to Evri and they are still bad. Rivet appear to be doing something similar. Closed their forum down and if they are working under the umbrella of DTG, they are going to pull down DTGs reputation as well.

l have said it before that Rivet should stop producing new routes until they have corrected all their appalling work, starting with WCL. Make St Ives and Penzance look realistic from their fantasy effort and they may earn my respect if they do a good job, until then, l have no confidence in Rivet producing a good accurate and realistic offering.

Despite outside Pullman’s being quite bare, the general feeling of Cardiff (particularly around Central and QS North Jn) isn’t bad at all! I could easily recognise the locations featured in the first look. Nice to see some foliage in the four-foot at Coryton, not convinced on the overly bright platform texturing though. Heath High Level looks good as far as I’m concerned from the article, nice to see its inclusion.

One thing that slightly worries me are the sounds on the 150. Particularly at 0:37, departing the Bay. Sounds identical to Rivet’s WCL example, even down to the dreary flange squeal (unless my ears deceive me, I can hear upon the departure?)

There’s no mention in the article that the sounds have been tweaked (except from door sounds to fit new animations.) Nor any mention about updated physics, which we all know Rivet’s original 150 is in dire need of.

Makes me wonder, if DTG have gone to the effort of updating suspension, animating brake block application etc, surely it wouldn’t be a massive ask to improve the physics!

    1. I love the route and all of the Branch lines. Same with the rolling stock.

    2. I am really worried about sounds. I hope they have changed to sounds.

    3. It better not be a Rivet product (in the current state they make their routes) their sounds are awful and sounds are definitely a main selling point, especially for DMUs

    4. I really want it to be a good route as I love DMUs and would love it to be a Day 1 purchase but with the current uncertainty, I just can't.

Looks like that’s £30 won’t be leaving my Steam Wallet then.

I am now seriously beginning to wonder if DTG have any in house route builders at all on their books and are now 100% reliant on second and third party outsourcing.

As regards the route itself, well I still maintain the scope should still have included Barry Island and at least one of the lines down to the Heads Of The Valleys, Rhymney, Merthyr or Treherbert.

Disappointing if the 150 sound and physics are little different to WCL the more so as these probably aliased over to the 153 as well.

I thought DTG learnt their lesson with rivet, with WCML S

Clearly not. This is just going to be another plain, barebones route with a Magna Carta of bugs. Like Jesus do they even have any UK Route builders at DTG right now?

oh wait. They are all working on Thomas right now…

I understand time constraints, but maybe don’t employ a third party, known for their bad quality, to do a route for you? It’s like getting those cardboard cutout police men and thinking they’ll scare away the shoplifters…

Matt said multiple times on his Charity Streams that the sounds are still the AP ones, that have been re-mixed, that there are no newly recorded sounds.

I hope not about the sounds I just can't use the 150 on WCL because of the state it's in but judging by this it's gone the same way which is very disappointing

Concerned, very concerned about the stuff that has been said about rivet and their involvement if so. Needs definitely challenged

From the picture of Penarth station, it’s reproduction to real life looks pretty good to be fair by checking it using google earth.

However as l said before if Rivet are involved, l will only buy it in a low price Steam sale. DTG should have released this before Mildmay as Joannes has done a fair job and this is by far worth the money spent. I think customers will happily play this until Cardiff is in a sale.

Well, console players are probably more offput by Mildmay & then there’s people that would rather drive a DMU than an electrostar.

I think there’s definitely a point for DTG to be more open about who’s actually making what we’re buying, but on the other hand Rivet has done good work in a second party role before (not saying they always do).

For this route I think we can all mostly say we’re used to a higher standard of detail on compact lines, so that will certainly be looked for.

The 150 was given scathing reviews when it originally released so I’d be very surprised to see no remarkable improvements. Again though people are getting hungup on the raw sounds, which in themselves are good - it was the simugraph setup & sound mixing implemented with it that was the issue.

I agree about your comment “For this route I think we can all mostly say we’re used to a higher standard of detail on compact lines, so that will certainly be looked for.”The bar has been raised by the two Just Trains routes and Johannes recent one man effort, that l cannot see Rivet ever meeting these standards. Although l doubt it, but if they can reach a higher standard, they should firstly show the community with a revamp of WCL. Until they do that, they don’t score for any credibility in my book!!! Leaving so much of their past work uncompleted is totally unacceptable.
