The Washington Metro 7000 Series is the seventh order of railcars consisting of 748 railcars that were built by Japanese Rail Manufacturer Kawasaki at factories in Yonkers, New York, Lincoln, Nebraska and Kobe, Japan. The trains are formed of 2 cars per trainset . They have a total of 132 seats. They also have 6 sliding doors per car. The even numbered pairs have an operator’s cab while the odd numbered ones do not have one. The trains entered passenger service in 2015 to replace the 1000 Series which consisted of 300 railcars built by Rohr Industries in 1973 at a factory in Winder, Georgia then entered passenger service in 1976. Next the 1000 Series went through a refurbishment program from 1993 to 1996 before retiring in 2016-2017 due to the 1000 Series trains being the oldest trains on the DC Metro. Next they replaced the 4000 Series which consisted of 100 railcars built by Italian Rail Manufacturer Breda at a factory in Pistoia, Italy and entered passenger service in 1991 before retiring in 2017 due to the 4000 Series being the least reliable trains on the Washington Metro.And finally they replaced the 5000 Series which consisted of 192 railcars built by Spanish Rail Manufacturer CAF at factories in Spain and Hunt Valley, Maryland then entered passenger service in June 2001 before retiring in 2018-2019.
