Good afternoon everyone. Today I'm taking you to an entirely new area of Italy, that I've wanted to propose you for a very long time: Rome! After a lot of researching (I didn't know those railways in depth), here I am, with a new Italian proposal of mine: The Rome Network. We're in Central Italy, within the urban/suburban area of the capital of this country; The busiest railway hub down here! This network-style idea includes the majority of this busy city node, in addition to the Fiumicino International Airport direct connection (plus Northern Belt Line, up to St. Peter) and 2 of the so-called "Roman Castles"suburban lines. Without forgetting the second city airport link (Ciampino), alongside latter directory! The city center, multiple converging lines, two airports served and two pleasant suburban branch lines in the hills south-east of Rome... The perfect mix for a similar experience to CCC or the recent Frankfurt S-Bahn, but with a proper Italian vibe! This is my Rome Network: Termini, Tiburtina to Fiumicino & Roman Castles!

    GENERAL FEATURES

Two possible ways to create this network:

    a) Linear / City Node: Rome Ostiense-Termini-Tiburtina + Rome-Fiumicino & Rome-Albano Laziale Railways:
    - 62 km(38.5mi) total lenght (exept for depots links etc..).
    - 4/6/8 tracks on node area (towards Rome Trastevere, Tiburtina or Quadraro Jn), double track (Trastevere-Fiumicino Airport & Quadraro Jn-Ciampino) and single track (Ciampino-Albano Laziale).
    - Standard gauge (1435 mm/4 ft 8+1⁄2 in), electrified 3kV DC OHLE (standard Italian network voltage).

    b) Articulated / All mentioned above + Part of Northern Belt Line (up to St Peter) & Rome-Frascati Railway (full):
    - 75km(47mi) total lenght (same as above).
    - 4 tracks (2 independent paths, almost completely underground / Rome Trastevere-S. Pietro) and single track (Ciampino-Frascati).
    - Standard gauge, electrified 3kV DC OHLE.

    This network is equipped with:
    - SCC and CCT(CTC) traffic control systems, BAcc (Coded Currents Automatic Block) equipped.
    - SCMT (Train Operation Control System), as safety system adopted.
    - GSM-R (GSM F) regards comm.

SFI Link (Italian rail standards, signals, SCMT operation etc...): https://www.segnalifs.it/

Max gradient on this network reaches:
    - 1.5-2.4%(15-24x1000), on climbs towards Frascati & Marino Laziale-Castel Gandolfo. Almost flat in the other areas.
Max permitted speed on this network reaches:
    - 50-150km/h(31-93mph) medium-slow urban stretch; fast outside city and then slow again uphill.

    This network is managed by:
    - RFI s.p.a (Italian Railway Network), as regards infrastructure.
    Passenger service is operated by:
    - Trenitalia s.p.a (DPR Lazio) private/public passenger transport company.
Other operators use these tracks, but they aren't our focus today!

    LAMPOIL

    L - Licensing: Don't know
We don't know if RFI, Trenitalia or others are willing to provide data access/search about this route. All details on the first page!

    A - Anticipation: Yes
Of course! The average player would be very satisfied and surprised to play this content: imagine starting with a country in TSW, bringing its capital! Surely network-style is the best way to explore such a famous city ingame!

    M - Mix: Yes
This content offers an incredible gameplay mix, with several lines and dozens (yes dozens!) of different patterns. Not to mention all layers that could be introduced later or from other future contents! The offer still in line with recent releases: About 1000 total services (including all layers/activities)!

    P - Prominence: Yes
Well, we're definitely talking about one of the most famous and appreciated cities in the world! The landscape doesn't fail to offer many landmarks: Colosseum, Vittoriano, St Peter (there would be dozens!) etc... Proposed stock is quite standard in this country, however variety is excellent and complete!

    O – Opportunity: Yes
Already suggest two possible ways to make this content! In addition, it would be possible to extend it to Nettuno, Velletri (completing the "Roman Castles" lines), or add the small Vatican City station, introducing the "Ville Pontificie Train" Vatican City-Albano Laziale special service!

    I – Intelligence: Yes
This year 2025 Jubilee is taking place, an important event for the city and its railways, with several special additional services to improve pilgrims mobility to/from Rome!

    L – Limitation: Maybe
The only real limitation is given by the city itself: Rome is very, very large and dense with buildings, roads, monuments etc... This could lead to implementation and performance issues. Not to mention the huge timetable!

    STATIONS

    upload_2025-5-21_12-34-49.jpeg
Rome Termini Main Station, the largest and busiest in Italy! 5th in Europe about annual traffic and passengers. It consists of a complex commercial/service frontal area, from which you can access 32 dead-end tracks! It's served by 850 trains/day! Famous are the historic signalbox and the two distinctive water towers side-by.

    upload_2025-5-21_12-34-58.jpeg
Rome Tiburtina Main Station, also called "Cavour Station". Second railway hub of the city, with over 500 trains/day! Completely renovated in 2011, today it features 19 tracks (18 go-through), surmounted by the modern 300m "bridge"(which contains the commercial/service areas)!

    upload_2025-5-21_12-35-16.jpeg
Up: Rome Ostiense Station, third largest in the city, built in 1940. It's an important terminal for several services of our network, being located on the city node!
Down Left: Rome Trastevere Station, located a short distance from the River Tiber. It's an interchange hub between various lines and services.
Down Right: Rome St Peter Station, under the Gianicolo Hill and near the namesake basilica. Northwestern Terminal of our network, equipped with access track to the Vatican City (freight and railtours).

    upload_2025-5-21_12-35-30.jpeg
Up. Fiumicino Airport Terminal, located front of the gateways area of the city's international airport. It was built in 1990, creating a direct link with Rome Termini. There's a unique OHLE, which differs from the "standard" one.
Down Left: Muratella Stop, constitutes the standard design for all stops in the Roman countryside.
Down Right: Rome Trade Exhibition Stop, always located on the Rome-Fiumicino line. It serves the huge exhibition complex nearby.

Not sure about the licensing issues and such, but adding some more countries to TSW,especially with a bit of different scenery (not rainy all the time like UK and Germany) would be a nice change of pace!

TSW should try to include Italy in future DLCS since it's a major rail nation in Europe, right now TSW is like a FIFA game without Serie A or La LIGA.

If we ever got Naples to Roma Termini with ETR500s and ETR1000s, it would be good to see those as AI too.

Fiumincino was a cool station too, and could make good use of the newly licensed aircraft models

I have read somewhere that some of those units can also go around 175 kph on highspeed sections, tho I am not sure if it was the Caravaggio units or sth else... since in Italy, as far as I know, the usual safety systems can do 175 kph (PZB is good up to 160 kph lets say)... might be wrong tho

the route looks nice, but for me, the rolling stock is the MONEY here... for some reason, there is sth very appealing to me about double decker EMUs :)

No, Rocks (like their Blues/Caravaggio cousins) are built on the common "Masaccio" platform by Hitachi Rail. Max up to 160km/h(100mph). This also applies to the Blues Intercity version!
As for the SCMT, it's able to manage speeds between 30km/h(19mph) and 250km/h(155mph)!

We are in such dire need of an Italian route for TSW. If this could be built that would be perfect. I also think that Roma-Napoli via Cassino e Frosinone would be awesome as its a well traveled route between two major cities.

Cassino to Avezzano would also be a beautiful route with naturalu empty stations unlike the dead stations of Rome with such a lack of Italian rolling stock. It would also pass through Val di Comino (one of the most beautiful valleys I must say even if i am slightly biased).

I will always be in full support of any Italian route though as DTG does need to branch out a bit.

Yes, totally agree with you! We need an Italian route so bad, even if something is underway on editor (Milan/Ferrara areas)! The Rome-Cassino-Naples would be nice to make, up to Frosinone (FL6 line). The Rome-Sulmona-Pescara up to Avezzano (FL2 line/regional) would be perfect: slopes, scenic valley and that famous arched viaduct! You would also have a good stock choice there: TAF, MD (MDVE+MDVC "Mazinga"&E.464s) and some ETR 104s (TUA)! Not to mention our legendary "Leopolder" announcement bells!

    TO ALL READERS

Have updated my suggestion, correcting some things and adding the link (I leave it below here too) to an extensive archive of Italian rail standards, signals, SCMT operation etc... You should be able to translate it with Google's automatic translator!

Bring it on someone I can see it looks like you're playing like the Frankfurt system the lines that we have for it are S1 S8 S9.

Yes, exactly! Here you would have three main lines (FL1, FL3 and FL4), which overlap along the urban node. Further integrated by FL5 and FL6 along the two main directories. This would be a great route, since scenary varies a lot along the way and there are different service patterns involved!
Not to mention the possibility of creating further future routes, originating from Rome; as happens between Frankfurt S-Bahn and Kinzigtalbahn!
