So im very much not far along with this project as im still learning the editor, but i've always wanted my own welsh narrow gauge line for Train Sim World, and after visiting the railway last summer with a close friend and taking over 300+ reference pictures of the locomotives and stock i decided at last to give it ago and see how far i can get.

So far the first draft of the track is in and gauged (Though the points frogs are a bit buggy). and the locos and rolling stock are models which i made earlier in the year for Transport Fever 2, which i've ported to unreal.

I'll be sharing progress pictures as i develop more of the line, and no doubt i will have many questions and struggles as i go.

Now this and the GWR Pannier project are the coolest things to come out of the TSW editor.

If DTG have even a lick of sense, they should be approaching you and featuring this on the community section of the roadmap. Can't wait to see how this all develops, great to see people making more steam locomotives for TSW :D

    Thanks Everyone
I finished laying the track tonight, the track still needs some work, my plan is to make changes as i landscape the line side. The editor spent most of its time crashing though. But now i have all the track laid i need to figure out getting talyllyn working so i can do a full run up the line.

Pendre Yard and Tywyn Wharf were particularly tricky thanks to the editor crashing alot and also getting the point work to fit into the space

My only progress so far has been getting the map to be selectable ingame, like any other DLC
I've created a new thread containing my teething troubles and the problems i had, so i can keep this thread for progress updates

If you'd like any assistance - I have general arrangements/drawings of most of the locomotives and stock, do drop me a PM - I like your No 1, but there are a few tweaks that would really, really crisp up the look of the model.

Although a DTG employee now, I was Permanent Staff on the Talyllyn for many years - amongst other things I was a coach finisher/loco painter as well as working on the signalling side. Up until about 2010 I'd painted/lined/varnished every single engine on the TR at least once and worked on every carriage.

I also sat on the Traffic and Operating Committee and Operating Documents Working Group for many years and wrote/revised/reissued the Rule Book, General Appendix and Train Signalling Regulations.

More than happy to help - drop me a line if you want anything: happy to help with ANY Talyllyn-related query you might have got.

I know when you come to do the signalling, there will be some changes, as I'm just designing a relocking of Abergynolwyn and I spent part of the weekend drawing out the circuits for a review.

Thanks that would be incredible, esspecially when it comes to the locos and stock, the one time i was there i took hundreds of photos of everything i could find, but unfortunatly No 5, No 4 and No 6 were out of service so i couldnt get as many shots as i'd have liked.
If you have any advice on tweaks i could make to No 1.

I'd love to hear them I originally built the model for Transport Fever 2 so the fine detail wasnt important but for TSW id like to get them as close as possible to their Real world counterparts

Awesome thank you, do you think you could maybe see if anyone you know might have the 2018 Anything Goes Gala Timetable?
I think that might be the only time all the Steam and Diesel fleet was in service at the same time, I'd like to try and replicate the time table if possible as i think that would be a cool Time table to run.

    Also Progress !!!
I managed to get passed the issue i was having, which prevented the route loading ingame turns out i was missing the a timetable, once that was fixed the whole thing started working like magic.

Now i can get on to relaying the track at Tywyn warf and marking out buildings

Reworked the track in Tywyn Wharf and had a go with the folliage tool (limiting myself to foliage found in the trainin centre)

This looks really good i dovetail would work with you to bring it to console would you do that I’m aware that other licenses would be required probably for that just I would love a new steam route and if dovetail really needed another reason it could tie into the rev w ardry extravaganza events pre make a pack around it

I'd be open to the idea but im still along way off that point, i dont even have working engines to run on the line, thats a whole other learning process for me
My end goal for this project is to re-run the 2018 Anything goes Gala as a playable timetable

Im still making progress on this addon, but at a slightly slower pace now. I took a break from doing the route assets and decided to focus on the locos, I was never happy with my locos as they were so i've started a version 5 of No 1 Talyllyn which now includes much more detail.

    upload_2025-5-4_16-29-53.png
    No 1 Talyllyn

On reflection jumping straight into a Steam locomotive when there isnt much reference material on the simugraph set-up for them was a bit of a gamble so i decided to pivot a bit and do No 11. and No 11. Since i have a reference for the UK Class 09 Simugraph so im hoping i can reverse engineer it and get locos 5, 9, 11 and 12 done.

Unfortunatly i lost the models i produced for these locos a few years ago, so i've had to start rebuilding them from scratch.
    upload_2025-5-4_16-34-43.png
No 11 and No 12, unfortunatly i dont have any drawings or diagrams for these locos so im having to scale it by eye.

Well this one has certainly piqued my interest, a narrow gauge Welsh railway and steam - what’s not to like? Good luck with your project.

I have Models for Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. As well as for Numbers 11 and 12. Only 7, 5 and 9 have no model at all and need ones built from scratch.

My stretch goal is to be able to run The full 2018 Anything goes gala timetable which had all locomotives. But its alot of work doing all these locos, one thing im quickly learning is that Route building is a fairly straight forward process but the locomotives are much more complicated.
I dont have much in the way of progress however i did get Number 11s skeleton mesh animated and into the game. Im just currently learning how to right the vehicle which i dont have an ETA for at the moment. Steam engines theres no documentation for at the moment so im likely going to have to engineer the simulgraph myself.

At the very least i'd like to get Numbers 1, 2, 11 and 12 working.

You have certainly put a lot of effort into this and hopefully you will be successful.

I have been working on a GWR Pannier Tank loco for a long time and it is indeed very complicated to get a "scratch built" locomotive set up and working in the editor.
I have tried to set up a Simugraph (SA asset) for a steam loco but have had no success in getting the loco running with it.
A custom loco will work in the editor if you use a DTG Rail Vehicle Model (RVM) and Simugraph from a similar loco but there are problems with wheel animations if there are differences in wheel layout between your loco and the DTG one.

Perhaps the Simugraph Decooker "trainsimcz" is working on will help us understand how to set them up..

Good luck with your project !

I've noticed that too, i moved on to the Diesel locos so i could try and figure out and reverse enginer the Simugraph, have you tried looking at the axels as they seem to have wheel size and gauages? wheel radius.png

    You are right of course.
The Simugraph Axle Node has wheel size and gauge but also somewhere it has the offset (X, Y , Z ) of each axle from the model origin.

When I use the DTG 4F Simugraph with my loco either the wheels don't rotate (if I don't use an animation blueprint) or they are moved to the 4F wheel spacing if I use a DTG animation blueprint.

This is what led me to try setting up my own Simugraph but the editor crashes if I try to use it. I think others have had this problem regardless of whether they're doing a steam loco.

I would be happy to post my Simugraph, but don't know if that would be much help.

Thanks for your reply on my GWR Pannier Tank thread , which I have answered separately.

A little more progress on Talyllyn Number 11 and by extension Number 12, i can now spawn the loco in and make parts of it interactive. Still a long way off and the orientation of the model is wrong (The sideplates are deliberatly up high so i can tell if the wheels are behaving properly. )

    Update Time!

This time i have something relavent.

I made the cab doors open and close. Granted the locomotive is hovering 2 feet of the ground, one of the axels has gone missing and the other is on it the middle of the model and the door opens the wrong way..... BUT The doors open and close, meaning i can acctually start animating this thing and building the cab interior.

Textures and Materials are the one thing i've never really been good at in the past i've gotten away with it as the locos i built had simpler materials and rendering specs, but now that im in a higher fidelity i need to do more to figure things out.

Lovely to see Skarloey... I mean Talyllyn in game! Named one of my dogs Skarloey in honour of my favourite railway as a child.

Never know, now that DTG have a licence with Mattel. Maybe that would allow potential to do a timetable based on one of their Awdry events with the face masks?

I started with Thomas too, but always loved the Skarloey engines more than the others. Visiting the Talyllyn for the first time was like some sort of pilgrimage for someone growing up with those stories :D

my god I want this, my childhood summers were spent at the campsite at Rhyd-yr-onen. I've waved at (from the farm gates just past Rhyd-y-onen station) and ridden behind everything that has turned a wheel there! unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to drive on the line ( I play with big engines down south) so to do that in all the glory of TSW I'd pay the full 33 quid for this. honestly if its got all the Tall-y-LLyn stock and locos I'd pay 50 quid.
hopefully it'll work with the pc/xbox store version

all the best with your brilliant project!

ps. this will be so much better than the TSC route just for the graphics !!!

I have almost completed the models for 11 and 12, they just need a simulgraph adde, then the coaching stock and waggons can be worked on. I have plans for All the steam locos, as my goal is to run the 2018 Anything goes gala time table fully. (The only year that all steam and diesel locos were all in service at once)
