Alan Thomson Simulation are making their Train Sim World debut. Manchester Airport Commuter is coming to Train Sim World 5 on 1st July!

Manchester Airport Commuter: Manchester - Alderley Edge
    [IMG]

Manchester Airport Commuter has been teased and talked about over the last few months, first appearing on our Roadmap in 2024. If you’re learning about this new route for the first time, you can go back and read our previous updates.
    So far, we’ve talked about:
Note that Manchester Airport Commuter will be released on Gen 9 (Xbox Series S|X & PS5) and PC platforms only, as mentioned in the May 2025 Roadmap.

    About ATS
ATS was started in 2017 by YouTuber Alan Thomson and Train Simulator Classic route builder Peter Mitchell. Their main goal at the time was to ensure anyone could produce and publish content for TSC in a way that worked for everyone, and after four successful years, they started to look into development for Train Sim World.
Once the team was established, with Hayden and Danny at the helm, they were quick to dive right in with support from the community and Dovetail Games and settled on the 27-mile Manchester Airport commuter route.

    The Route
    [IMG]

Explore 27 miles of track out from Manchester Piccadilly through to the suburban countryside setting of Alderley Edge via Manchester Airport.

A railway network with complex history, the lines which service the heart of Manchester date back as far as the 1840s. The main line through Stockport was established as a major trunk route and quickly became overloaded. It was supplemented in the early 1900s with the addition of the Styal Line, an alternative path between Wilmslow and Manchester. In 1993, a spur would be built off this new line to serve Manchester Airport, taking trains directly under the flight path and right next to EGCC’s second air terminal.

This route Add-on includes both spines: a main line via Stockport and the Styal line via Manchester Airport, converging at Wilmslow. Both branches offer busy commuter traffic into the heart of Manchester.

Manchester Piccadilly, first seen in the Glossop Line route Add-on, forms the focal point for passenger services in Manchester Airport Commuter, with a full station concourse and fully explorable Metrolink and taxi rank areas. Route Hopping will also be available for players that own Glossop Line.

A short stretch of the line out to Ardwick shares that of Glossop Line, before branching off south into new territory via Longsight and Stockport. Multiple modelled depots lie along the route, including at Ardwick, Longsight, Manchester International Depot & Stockport Sidings. Neutral sections are also included at the relevant parts of the route.

The route’s namesake Manchester Airport and its dedicated station are modelled with the appropriate signage and features, as well as the Airport Skywalk which is best seen at night. The runway and approach lights can be seen, along with licensed Airbus aircraft flying overhead (like those seen in Train Sim World 5’s Frankfurt – Fulda route) making for some impressive Photo Mode shots!
Neutral Section functionality also features on relevant parts of the route.

    Northern Class 323 EMU
    plus Class 66 Diesel Locomotive
    [IMG]

Both new and existing players of Train Sim World will likely be familiar with the simple-to-operate Class 323 EMU as seen in the Training Center. These popular units with their distinctive traction motor noise were first introduced in 1994 and see use both on the Birmingham Cross-City Line and in the Greater Manchester area. The latter trains are run by Northern.

Whilst the units remain much the same as from the previous two route Add-ons they’ve featured in, the Manchester Airport Commuter services will feature a functioning Conductor Mode (or Guard Mode).

The Class 66 is also included for freight services with FKA Wagons.

    Timetable, Service Layers and Gameplay
    [IMG]

Similar to Train Sim World’s San Bernardino Line, players will be able to explore the route across two separate timetables. A Weekday schedule, including freight, will form the standard set of passenger operations in addition to the alternative Sunday patterns.
These timetables will make great use of all four featured depots/sidings for a variety of movements including, shunting, coupling and washing runs – meaning even after passenger services are complete, the action doesn’t stop!

    Additional Service Layers
    [IMG]

Players with other Add-ons in their collection will be able to see and operate additional services along the route.
    These include:
Class 350 services from West Coast Main Line South, operating from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport and Ardwick Depot.
Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino services between Wilmslow or Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly plus Static stock at Longsight Electric TMD
    [IMG]

ScotRail Class 158 services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.
EMT Class 158 services from Midland Main Line operating services between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport
Class 87 rail tour services in the weekday timetable from Just Trains’ West Coast Main Line: Preston-Carlisle route Add-on
Railhead Treatment Train services and freight via Heald Green and Stockport.
Class 150 & 153 services from Cardiff City Network. These will appear in a variety of formations, including different mixed 150+153 combos.

    Mastery Rewards
Both route posters and a Sceney Tile will be available to unlock as part of Train Sim World 5’s Mastery rewards.
The Scenery Tile will feature track workers waiting to place an Emergency Speed Restriction at Slade Lane Junction... drive miles and complete Scenarios to unlock the option to toggle them!

    Pricing and Steam Loyalty Discount
    [IMG]

Train Sim World 5: Manchester Airport Commuter: Manchester - Alderley Edge route Add-on will release on 1st July for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam for £24.99/€29.99/$29.99

MAC looks amazing and the price is really good. Shame the discount doesn’t apply to a console user. Still, for £19.99 for steam users is a fantastic discount.

It’s a first day buy for me.

Thankful there’s a layer toggle these days, some of those layers are a little bit on the unbelievable side for my palette, so I’ll be turning them off. Totally understand why they’ve been added to the game mind, and for some this will be a positive.

The loyalty discount makes this a very attractive proposition and providing there is no major issues found by early adopters I’ll be adding this to my catalogue shortly after release.

Any word on the 86? Seems odd that was heavily promoted for months by JT and DTG and even had a same coming soon article but since then, nothing.

Release spell of this content has finally been broken! Price is good and quality seems much better to some recent releases! We'll see the preview on June 30th. Sorry for JT, if they don't release 86 anytime soon, I might get this instead!
PS. To be extended to Crewe and, maybe, with second NT unit! Take your time, ATS!

Updated suspension for the 323 isn't mentioned.

This article makes it sound like it's the same exact one from Glossop, which would be a deal-breaker for me.

Maybe DTG can explain why BCC and Glossop have inexplicably never gotten the update when the TTC version has it?

The moaners are out again. I think that at first sight, this is a good looking and complex route for a first attempt and the price point is reasonable given no new rolling stock (which hopefully will be addressed in a future release).

DTG Jamie will this route have trophies for PS5? And can you give an update of the implementation of the trophies for Frankfurt? For both routes, this will be a factor in deciding to buy (for me, anyway).

The route looks quite good, and I was happily surprised that the price had been reduced from normal. I sort of get why there isn't any new rolling stock, but my one complain is that there isn't any reskins of existing stock that would be more realistic, for example a Northen class 150 or a Transpennine express clas 350.

I think that's a fair price for the route if you already own the Class 323! In fact, that's really sharply priced. The route it self looks very nice!

In the last frames of the demo video it seemed to me that the 323 had suspension. The question about the suspension was asked and they did confirm that the 323 and 66 would have suspension. I only have one question left, why they do not implement the 323 suspension on the Glossop.

Disintegration7 Suspension is a standard part for the current game so you can assume without any objections that it will be included in all new routes.

I did this with the Welsh one & Mildmay Line & it's fantastic the rewards system - i'm super excited for this too!

Also does anyone know why the Scotrail 158 is layered? just out of curiosity

I appreciate that it’s their first route, and it looks very good from the initial video. But £25 for a 27 mile route with a train I already own (twice) is a bit steep

It is a standard part of all new locos (it's an element of train modeling, not route modeling). The 323 is not new.

The impression I get is that ATS' current team can make routes/landscapes/timetables, but not rolling stock: they're using what already exists in the game (Glossop 323, universal 66, HKA wagons).

I'm not sure, I thought I saw a long time ago on the forum that some 158 Northern were running with their old Scotrail livery, maybe it's a reference to that or just like 350 they didn't want to do the reskin or both at the same time

    I found a video :

In this case the 323 is not a layer right?! Its including in the package. If its a layer fair point but not the case. So its a train thats including in a TSW5 route so you should expecting the new features. The same for the new/re-used Dosto trains those are including in Frankfurt Fulda addon. Same train only suspension is added. Correct me if i'm wrong Please.

On the fence. The route looks good and the price with discount is nice (though it will be £12.50 in the Christmas or worst case Easter next year sale). However it should have gone to Crewe, it's another UK city electric bus stop route and is relying entirely on cuckoo in the nest for rolling stock and traction.

Looks amazing it does and really can’t wait!
Alan Thomson With 390 services will there be depot runs to and from Longsight depot? as it doesn’t specifically say that just says static stock i would hope there is 390 ECS services. Thank you :) Great Job Alan!

Bit of a stuttery mess in the preview. The city bus doing wheelies is fun. The price ( with discounts ) is surprisingly good.

But you can't get away from the bus stop nature of the route and the lack of fresh rolling stock.

    Christmas sale............maybe.

The video mentions additional content required for Manchester Piccadilly and Slade Lane Junction. What additional content is required and what does it provide? I am assuming that Manchester Piccadilly doesn’t just disappear if one hasn’t got Glossop for example.

Lets be honest if we can have Scotrail liveried Class 158 on the route we can have ECML 800's on the route. We might as well have Class 43 HST's from Midland Mainline or GWR subbing in for XCountry services.

As I stated above these sort of layers dont do it for me (won't stop me buying as I'll just turn them off) but for others the additional services could be the difference between buying and leaving on the shelf.

Just watching the stream, looks epic, a whole new level of detail in this one. Amazing effort.

158789, the unit in that video, was bought by northern a few years back from scotrail, in which it has since been converted into a northern rail spec. Believe it’s seen around Manchester and the east I think.

For those that didn't watch the preview stream on Alan Thomsons Twitch channel, Manchester Piccadilly and Airport have had their concourses modelled and it's actually really impressive how much you can explore on foot. Piccadilly station is leaps better than the Glossop version now.

The stations look well made that's for sure and there's a ton of new assets so I think I'll give this route a go.
