A gameplay feature that is missing in TSW, but not TSC. Sounding the horn at certain intervals a long the route. I’d like to see this added to TSW one day, especially UK routes where drivers are required to sound the horn.
To clarify...you mean a requirement for "points" in scenarios? Like getting points for safety systems?
Yeah, it would reward the player with AP just like acknowledging TPWS and Vigilance safety systems. A symbol would appear on the top right, where you look at the upcoming signals. Similar to how it looks on TSC.
I think the whole thing with horns and sounding them in the right places at the right times is difficult to put in the game because the rules around when horns should used are so complex and there’s no way a route builder would know where to put the requirement to sound your horn in. Even simple ones like at whistle boards don’t always apply. We have a situation already where AI drivers are sounding horns at times they shouldn’t. JT have made it so that every time a loco sets off it sounds its horn. That’s not always correct. That doesn’t affect points though. When it does affect points because there will be times when the game expects you to sound your horn against the rules is when it becomes a problem, and it would happen. It’s similar to the new points system where it deducts points for not using wipers in the rain even if the only time you have turned wipers off is in tunnels, where you should definitely not be keeping your wipers on. I have no idea if this has been fixed since its introduction (not seen anything in update notes) because I don’t drive in the rain any more. The game looks so much better in sunshine anyway but I don’t like being docked points for doing things correctly. The same would happen with horns. A lot. As it stands now is fine. Sound your horn when you think it is right or at any other time you like but don’t expect a biscuit for doing so and more importantly you don’t get docked points for not doing it. And suggestions belong in the suggestion forum, not in the general discussion, so 1000 points docked for that.
Maybe this could be some sort of scenario pack to test it out for people who want it? As much as I enjoy the horn play as an American (the European toot toots are just silly), it does seem like a lot of work for something you can do on your own. You CAN sound the horn all you want. What's the benefit of all that work? Points that don't matter? You literally don't DO anything with experience points in this game. Then again, I never got the appeal of the "safety systems" things in the Euro stuff either. Do them fine, but points? Meh. You don't get extra points for using windshield wipers in the rain or the correct headlight setting. We already have in some ways a game that's overcomplicated. I just don't see the advantage of having to program this "hard code" stuff just for "points." The systems exist in the trains. That's accurate. Whether you use them.... well, that's part of the fun. =-)
I just think adds an extra element of gameplay, especially UK routes as the safety systems are basic compared to the likes of German content. It could also be toggled on/off as an extra option in the menu, for players who don’t want the extra commitment
On TSC you can be penalised for "improper horn use" however in the real world there are numerous reasons why you can sound the horn and that is not even including "because you felt the situation warranted it". Yes "Whistle Boards" would be/are a nice feature but I don't think there should be a points system for horn use, heck you'd get penalised for tooting for spotters and kids as you go past them. Your route knowledge should tell you where the appropriate spots are, such as foot crossings, level crossings and stations so you can sound your horn accordingly. Of course don't forget to toot for persons on or about the line too. Incidentally I got pulled in years ago for making my 37 perform the intro to the A-Team, I told my FSM that I was just waking my wife up as I was passing our hotel but apparently I woke up every bugger in Bury and the surrounding area
It’s not good for the wiper blades or the windscreen if you have wipers on in dry conditions. It’s probably not good for the motors and mechanism driving the wipers either. The maintenance depot will not be happy.
I'm not naming names but one of our pres loco owners will have a right grumble if you leave the wipers on whilst sat in a station for more than a few minutes, he's running out of his BR issue wiper blades that the sod went and pinched from the scrap lines and his own depot back in the day... But yeah having them on in lengthy tunnels or when it is dry does both tear the wiper blade and can damage the mechanism.
