Anyone know if it is possible to use TS Tools to bulk replace terrain textures painted under the track bed. The WCML Preston - Glasgow - Edinburgh merged route uses more than one ballast texture. I want to change the track types, which is easy enough using TS Tools. But i also would like to change the ballast textures to match. Really do not fancy painting the whole track bed manually, so is it possible to do ?
You can change the texture set that the texturemap file uses for that texture. The file is a bin file - usually under [route]/environment/terrain/ and usually called terrain.bin or texturing.bin. This has a sequence of definitions (one for each season) that point to individual texture files. Look at Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\Environment\Terrain\Texturing.bin for an example. Good luck
I'm not sure but I think that changes the track and ballast rather than the texture underneath the track
@cunningn#3154 Sorry buddy that has left me completely lost (old and senile). If i change the whole texture file, will that not change everything in a route texture wise, fields, embankments, etc ? But thank you for trying to help, much appreciated. trevkiwi I already use the track enhancements, but they do not change the painted terrain ballast type. Thanks anyway for replying.
The texturemap file defines which textures apply where, so what Neil is saying is that you could redefine the offending one to also use the texture allocated to the ballast you want to use. But a word of warning - when I did this for a route I was working on, I was warned that something about doing this might break things - nobody knew why but it did indeed break everything defined there, so I gave up on that plan. Just make sure you have a good backup to fall back on. So, yes, I had to re-apply the desired textures manually. Still haven't finished, actually . . . John
So best to just do it manually then from Carlisle to Glasgow and Edinburgh, John. Particularly in regards your own experience. Thanks very much for replying and the good advice.
You could sned me the relevant file and the name of the texture of ballast that you want and I could probably alter it for you. It's not hard to do but has some gotchas
There are a few patches on Alan Thomson's site for various routes. Search Results for “AP Track Patch” – Alan Thomson Simulation
Do you believe in coincidences? It was my steam-era version conversion of Carlisle to Glasgow on which I wanted to change the textures and failed! But cunningn#3154 has offered to help. Never look a gift horse in the mouth . . . John
You seem to be missing the point where the OP does not wish to change the track or shoulder ballast but the ground texture. These track patches won't change the ground texture but just change the track.
Thank you everyone for replying and suggestions. I would think as it is a merged route that is must be referencing the two texturing files from each route. Even more confused now i just looked at both terrain.bin files in TS Tools and they both reference AP ballast textures. But to my eyes (no guarantee), the two sections of the merge look to be using the original track bed textures. WCML North, the orangey colour and Shap using grey ballast textures. .
The route can only have one terrain definition file AFAIK - and it is quite possible that it is ignoring both the ones you are looking at and using a 3rd (default Kuju anyone?). ;-) Find the routeproperties.xml file (in the root of the route folder) and see where the TerrainBlueprint section points to - that is the file the route is using.
Understood buddy thank you. Was it you who did the excellent merge Kings X - York and Cambridge route, with the era change function ? EDIT: This line is it............ Kuju RailSimulator Environment\Terrain\Texturing.xml
Yes that was me. Re your problem - so it isn't using any special textures at all which means that if you are seeing two different textures then one route used ballast-A and the other route used ballast-B (made up ballast names). So a solution would be to copy the kuju file to the main route asset folder of the merged route and edit it so that both ballast texture definitions use the same ballast file (having edited the routeproperties.xml file to point at your new file of course!). This will change the 'B' texture wherever it is used in the route - usually this is ok but you may want to do a fly-through afterwards just to check nothing has gone squiffy. Good luck.
Brilliant route buddy (sorry cannot remember your name). I followed it from the first release . Excellent i think i can follow those instructions, so i will give it a go over the next couple of days. Many thanks for your patience and all your advice and help, very much appreciated.
I have scrapped the route. I ended up without any textures at all and all the track was gone. Sorry to waste everyone’s time, particularly @cunningn#3154 sorry buddy. I am not really a fan of OHLE routes and only enjoy it for it's end to end distances. Which is around 192 miles. Off to install your excellent ECML & Cambridge Lines route. Which i believe is about the same length, Kings X - York. I will not be fiddling with it .
Damn - sorry to hear it. I understand that backups are a good thing ;-) Have fun with ECML/Cambs etc.
I am not a route builder not even a fiddler really. Back ups are for wimps buddy . Can i just politely say that in regards your links to assets on the ECML & Cambs site. GreatNortherns site no longer exists but you can get to the files by going to his announcement page http://golden-age-rails.com/ Which has a link to his assets on a google site. Also you omitted that ECML also requires the girder bridge from his site. I hope you do not mind me pointing this out. I did look for a contact link on your site but couldn't see one buddy.
If you think Backups are for wimps why are you asking people on how to do something in the game? I make mistakes all the time but I have backed up what I'm changing so when it does not work I revert to the default version.
I want to change the ground texture on the SAR Route I changed the tracks on - it looks awful. The Union Workshop tracks look much better. I'm going to follow your suggestions of changing the texture file to something a bit more like ballast instead of this.
I'm trying to replace the Terrain Texture but when I select the new texture and click on the ground I get like circles but nothing changes. The route is not locked and the files are not read only When I do the same on a different route a large area changes to the new texture I selected. I presume I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.
Sounds funny (duh). Try a blank area in the route and see what it does there. Check different textures in that route and see if you can change any of them. Make sure that you have the texturepaintbrush tool selected (noddy but worth a check).
I was able to change textures on another route without a problem but not on this one. I have an idea that sound crazy but... I have identified the texture I don't like as Pebbles Dark so If I copied the Texturing file in Kuju\RailSimulator\Environment\Terrain\Texturing.xml calling it Texturing2 and pointed the RouteProperties.xml at that Then a copy of Rock called Rock2 and in that the texture I want to change is renamed Pebbles Dark. I might be missing something obvious but I don't do much route building Any thoughts?
You mean 'cheating' and using the same textureset name but pointing it at a different texture? This will work but may have unexpected effects elsewhere in the route. However, as a first stage you need to find out why you can't change any textures in the route - that suggests write protection - so check that the route scenery folder(s) aren't write protected - best way is to use RWTools and just remove write protection from everything!
I had never done that before with RWTools and it worked The original Pebbles Dark is on the right and the middle has Gravel Track Bed and to the left is Gravel Track Dark which looks a bit better but has weeds coming thru. So I will use Gravel Track Bed. I presume there is no way to bulk change the Texture - which was the idea behind my "cheating" to use it.
It is possible to turn off the weeds in the terrain blueprint. Look for flora index and floara density and set both to 0 for the Gravel Track Dark. Didn't I read somewhere on the forum that RouteProperties.xml is only loaded if the route template blueprint isn't found? Or was that related to weather files? Can't remember. But if editing the routeproperties.xml doesn't work maybe take a look at the route template instead. Normally it is located in Assets\DeveloperName\RouteName\TemplateRoutes. I recently changed the terrain file on my route and it did update the ground textures. But I'm not sure if it updates areas that has been manually painted, but it would be strange if it didn't.
I will have a look at that Flora - thanks The one think I'm not sure of is where does the route store the info as to what terrain is where With an Asset like signals, buildings, bridges, its in the Track.bin Not sure on Terrain files
Just tested on an empty route, after painting the terrain and saving a folder named MixMap was created in the route folder. The bin files doesn't seem to contain any logic data that can easily be edited.
The texturesets are defined on mixmap tiles using a hex? code which defines the textureset(s) being used in each 8x8 section of that tile (referenced sequentially top-left to bottom-right IIRC. It is possible to amend them (I do it as part of the route merge 'tool') but I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself. Much easier to redefine what the textureset codes point at the relevant file (eg Look at Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\Environment\Terrain\Texturing.bin or route equivalent)
I looked in the file you mentioned and it has all the different textures used but not where on the route. Which brings me back to plan A - Which is a bit messy so I need to work it out. Thanks for the advice
So far looking good Before And after All done by copying a number of files and renaming The game is looking for the old darker ballast but it finds this texture that was renamed to suit, Thanks for the help gents
