There are british steam locomotives already and they are awesome. I heard that some people complained about them, but its a game. As long as I get to drive one of those great machines, then Im happy. It doesnt need to be 1:1 simulation to enjoy them. Simply driving with them is breathtaking experience. It would be super awesome to have american or german steam locomotives, like DRB 50, or american trains like from Mafia 1 and 2 games :3 Steam trains are the golden era of the railroads, it would be super shame to avoid them in such a great game like TSW is.
DTG so far as we know have still not relented their “No more (proper) steam”, policy for TSW. So while it doesn’t hurt to ask, don’t get your hopes up.
I've got some hope that the longer the PC editor is alive, we will eventually get 3rd party steam locomotives? By who? I've got no clue.
On the US side, Smokebox would be the only one I could see making the jump, but not until DTG improve steam physics to be really good (Or if he gets persuaded enough by Gary and HIS). Other US steam devs I dont see leaving TSC.
"Smokebox" has such high standards I doubt any DTG implementation of steam will be sufficient. He only did UP's excursion locomotives to original erection drawings. I believe he is British and getting on in age. His UP switcher for TSC is making very slow progress. I believe DSGDDR and MachineRail's modeling skills should be sufficient for TSW. But proper external combution and reciprocal steam propulsion simulation is entirely a different matter. I do not have high hopes for steam in TSW, also since the majority of players are thumbstick warriors wanting quick action with one handle plastic trains on bus stop routes to score those XPs. TTTE is a toy train rendition of a comic character and doesn't really count as 'steam', does it?
It is such a wasted opportunity. I dusted off SoS to do a couple of the outstanding Journey elements and just a little more work and effort could have provided such a fantastic experience. But it’s like they did the minimum possible to appease Paul Jackson’s edict to get steam in TSW and once he moved on it was all quietly dropped. SoS itself is a tragic waste of opportunity. Those massive freight yards and complexes must have taken many hours to lay out and configure, yet totally wasted. Empty acreage everywhere. By now should have been alive and kicking with many different classes of steam loco plus additional coaching and wagon stock. My point being, I guess, is that maybe the German and US steam market were lucky they didn’t get a similar ersatz representation of their historical steam scene.
Personally I've always liked the looks of German and US steam locos more than their British counterparts. I'd welcome some German or US steamers in my TSW collection.
US Steam (including operational locos): -ATSF 4-8-4s #3751 and #2926 for Cajon Pass; also 5000, 5001, and 5011-Class 2-10-4, 3450/3460-Class Hudsons (including Blue Goose #3460), 2-10-2, and 2-10-10-2 Mallet -UP FEF-3 #844, Big Boy #4014, and Challenger #3985 for Sherman Hill and Cajon Pass; also 2-10-2, Bull Moose 2-8-8-0, 4-10-2, and 4-12-2 -For Horseshoe Curve: PRR K4s #1361, NKP Berkshire #765, N&W J-Class #611; also PRR M1/M1a/M1b; H-10, B6sb, T1 Duplex, S1, Q1, Q2, J1 2-10-4, I-1, L-1 -SP #4449 for Cajon Pass (also BNSF and American Freedom Train versions); also Cab Forwards (multiple versions), 4-10-2s, 2-8-4s, and other GS-Class 4-8-4s -B&O EM-1, Big Six 2-10-2, Pacific, and Hudson for Sand Patch Grade
DTG basically gave up and said it was too hard to fix the steam simulation so won't be planning any more steam locos
The line was electrified 1927 after that steam trains weren’t running on this route and Railtours with steam to my knowledge there was one in 2006. So when they would introduce German steam then for a other route. And it’s not likely that we will have more steam in TSW.
Do you have any sources for that? Heard it for the first time, and think it to be highly unlikely. Nitpicking mode on The route was planned and built as an electric route from the start, due to the high gradients. At the start, only the Austrian Ruetz power plant supplied the whole route with electricity, until the Walchensee plant joined in for the German segment in 1924 So steam locos on this route would be highly unrealistic. Especially in 1989, but also in general.
These teasers were found on the Mittenwaldbahn route with signs saying 'Don't smoke kids unless it is a steam train' possibly teasing a new German steam train. It might not be the case and could just be a joke on the part of the developers. You can see more of what was discussed in the Reddit thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/trainsimworld/s/WAXLV15grB
Do we? I just use steam locos on other games that do them better and use TSW for non-steam. "Want" is not the same as "Need." Not every game needs everything. That's why they have different games... including TSC by Dovetail Games which has steam too.
Right, I know about that easteregg. But in my opinion, this just points to a new route situated in Baden-Württemberg being made, which might include some steam traction. Some people also speculated that the "Don't Smoke Kids" being written with capital letters hints to the route being Donaueschingen - Singen - Konstanz. But I wouldn't hold my breath on it, as of now it's all just speculation. Also, if TSG keeps up their rhythm of releasing routes, we might still be one TSW away from it Regardless, Mittenwaldbahn is just not the right route for steam traction. It was an electric route from the start, and the year of 1989 is about 15 years too late for regular, timetable-wise steam traction in Germany anyway... and about 10 years for Austria.
It's already great for having the "Crocs" on it. =-) Maybe one day they can find an German "heritage" railway like West Somerset Railway to load up with old timey German locos.
TBF it would make sense for a separate steam or heritage route to be made but I don't see why no rail tours with banking locos couldn't layer on to Mittenwaldbahn as other have pointed out that rail tours have taken place on the line. Would the route be too steep even for them?
That would be quite easy with the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (Harz Narrow Gauge Railways) but it‘s not a heritage railway instead it’s steam operated public transport.
Of course, if we'd get another historic route with some steam loco attached to it, I'd love to take it through the Alps for some railtour That would be something very different and very nice to have... East German narrow gauge steam route. There would be a couple of opportunities for that in the Harz or Erzgebirge areas
What loco are you thinking of? Whether it can make the grade depends on the loco and what it's pullling =-) The only ones in game are the UK ones, so if you mean those (Jubilee being the most common) then yes it'll work for a rail tour. I've run it up the Cajon Pass before and it'll do it but it's slow. I don't think the Mitten is nearly that steep (nowhere near 3%) so you should be fine with it. I figure there won't be any more steam because they can't keep everyone happy, so just use that as a stand-in on routes for my own rail tours. Usually those are US routes though. The Mitten does seem to lend itself to fun rail movements I find. North American diesel stuff works really nicely, sort of resembles similar Rockies terrain for freight movements or AMTRAK.
A German steam loco, I'm no expert on them (pun not intended) but some of the Easter Eggs on the TSG route were teasing German steam locos which could happen at some point. I know for freight that the 8F needs a banking locomotive on Peak Forrest but the passenger Jubilee services can tackle the slope with no issues. I don't think peak Forrest is as steep as Mittenwaldbahn though.
Well no, it's not as steep by far, but I too am no expert on German steam. Or steam as a rule... maybe Amity or someone with some knowledge of "D.S.K" to know what would be "appropriate" for that line? I know they said Mitten itself was never a "steam" line so that wouldn't be a good fit. Don't know anything about the DSK line in the "easter egg conspiracy." But I'm sure something steam would fit somewhere, because Germany had it just like everyone else so it went SOMEWHERE =-) Wasn't there like a Class 52 or something that had a ton of copies made? Are any of those still in service? Do any do rail tours? I don't think you could do a whole route of steam, but something like a "rail tour DLC" like Athena did with the 47 could be a fun layer for multiple routes for a small developer. TSG did that with the E94, maybe they'd take a whack at it. Granted it wouldn't be as "in depth" as a few steam people want, it'd be basically like the existing steam engines work, a bit simplified... but I'd buy it if it looked neat and could run on a number of German routes. Then again, I'm admittedly more of a fan than an authentic purist. I like to take the Jubilee up on the Fife or Cajon Pass and don't care if it would "actually run there" or "has the proper safety devices" or if the pressure levels are correct or even if it's the exact right model. It's a cool looking steam loco on a fun route for sightseeing. However, I'd wager that there's room for simple DLC like that which isn't a whole route. Skyhook, TSG, etc.
From the BR 52 are 29 operational but that s for them in the entire world so not only Germany, but they do railtours.
Well if the route really turns out to be Donaueschingen - Singen - Konstanz (and I can't think of any other Baden-Württemberg route where the acronym would fit), there are a couple of possible candidates: the BR 38, BR 39, BR 03 or BR 50 mainly come to mind. Those seem to have been the main steam locos on the route before it got electrified during the 70's. Of those, the BR 50 would clearly be my favourite. I never was much of a steam fangirl, but always had a soft spot for this jack-of-all-trades... over 3000 of them were produced, which is a feat in itself I'll buy the mysterious D.S.K. regardless if it's a steam route or not. If it's an electrified route where we can put the E94 to more good use, while also getting another electric or diesel loco of that era, I'm totally fine with it E44 V200 V100
The Crocs are just so much fun and unique. On a side note, what's your response to the new 294? I know it came up in another thread =-)
They are! Locos like that feel more "alive" and have much more personality than those modern plastic stick-pusher lawnmowers called Traxx or Vectron. At least for me On the one hand, I love it! Much needed and often suggested/requested (by myself as well as others). Will be the first thing I'll hop in once TSW6 is out On the other hand, DTG mentioning that it will only get timetable services on Dresden-Leipzig for now, while on all existing routes it's Free Roam only, makes me incredibly sad. Talk about a wasted opportunity, this shows DTG's lack of care for existing routes once again. I just hope it doesn't turn into a BR 204 2.0, being relegated to some meager shunting stuff on just one single route.
Agreed! Crocs rock. They're so "hands on" like driving a manual transmission car. But yeah, the 294 just BEGS for layers on almost every route. Not having those layers feels like putting a wild animal in a zoo.
About the TSG Teases, I think Lukas said in an interview that we'll here more about the "dont smoke kids, unless its a steam loco" tease at the beginning of next year. I think an 01, with its 100th anniversary, or an 52 would be realistic since they are running rail tours still.
