Bit of a random topic... but am I the only one who gives a quick wave at AI drivers passing me or do other people do it? Maybe it's a force of habit, or perhaps it adds to the immersion!
That sounds cool and I’ve never thought about that. I would think Train Drivers do this in real life. Bus drivers do it all the time. I’m curious though. How do you wave in TSW ??. As you can’t see the player model when your in First Person view. Do you just shake the camera side to side ??? lol.
I want to sound cool and say "obviously I don't it's just a game... " But yes, sadly I do with some of the trains that pass me!
Sometimes if I’m really imagining myself driving for real then I will give other drivers a wave. It’ll usually be after I’ve watched a cab ride video and seen a real driver doing it, as it sticks with me for a while as something I should be doing. I am always aware of how bonkers it is to be waving at my TV but it’s all good fun.
LMAO. I thought I was the weirdo. I’ll even call them out by name… when Acela goes by I’ll give them a “oh hi Amtrak”
I see engineers do it all the time in real life. Lots of rail fans around here (relatively) I don't know if there's a "wave" in game, but I give them a quick shot of the horn when passing yes. Stations too. Can't hurt to be friendly, even if it's AI =-) Maybe they'll remember you were friendly when the AI takes over the world.
I don’t wave at the AI trains, but if I hear an IRL train horn while I’m playing I toot my virtual horn in response. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Or my colleagues don't like me, or they're very unfriendly, but they never wave back. So I stopped waving to my colleagues
I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo who does this I try not to do it when other people are around, but sometimes I do it out of habit and get ridiculed for it Greeting other drivers with the horn is actually frowned upon in Germany. Most drivers do it either by hand, or flashing/dimming the headlights instead. Or sometimes both. Yeah, or flash their lights in return! This would add a good deal of immersion
In the UK drivers do wave at each other. Use of the horn or flashing of lights is not permitted. In fact, in the rule book flashing lights is an indication to the other train of danger ahead, and the correct response from the Driver of the other train would be to apply the emergency brake, bring the train to a stand, then report what happened to the Signaller. That could be a bit embarrassing if you were just saying hello! Funnily enough, I have seen Drivers waving to other ’drivers’ on their assessments on the company’s simulator. As others have said, after a while of doing it in real life it just becomes an instinct and it’s difficult not to do it!
Not something I’ve really done in TSW. Playing SimRail in MP I have got in the habit of sounding a horn when passing another train, in case it’s driven by a live player. And for the MP wannabes, that’s about as exciting as MP gets!
In the YouTube videos of a German driver I see that he always waves. He shows he is a very good professional and I try to imitate him, so I sometimes do it too when I play, but not always.
Very interesting. In Germany it's about the same with the horn. The horn is pretty much a signal of attention and danger. On flashing the lights I'm not sure about any policy or rule. I've seen some drivers do it to greet others, while some don't. But a giving a wave is very very common, I'd venture a guess that about 95% of the drivers in my area here do it It sure has become instinct to me, just the same as with the safety systems... I caught myself pushing my Sifa button on the keyboard occasionally, while watching some train-related video on Youtube, just out of habit That's not RegioTf206 by any chance? I can highly recommend his channel
Always give the other AI drivers a wave, I've made it a force of habit. I'd presume we're talking about IC Lokführer?
Not this but I would like to see a random chance for a passenger to spawn as a train spotter and then request to blow the horn and when you do, they wave..
I find that I do it more often when using Thirdrails, as any time I am streaming TSW and I see another player driver approaching down the track in the opposite direction, I'll make a point of waving to the next train which passes me, as the plugin really helps add a sense of connection with other players, and my chat like it.
I have given the odd wave when using ATS or ETS2 if a kind AI driver lets me through, but definitely a ‘tooter’ in TSW
I do it too Bit of a habit I haven't been able to shake from my time working for the ÖBB. When I was still working as a conductor, I would generally give a quick wave or nod to any train passing me by when I was standing at a station in full uniform. Of course, you'd also go up to your driver to check in with them and to say hi, and if you'd ride with them in the cab, you'd wave at oncoming drivers, too. Not that I ever did that, technically, conductors weren't supposed to hang out in the cab with the drivers *ahem ahem*
I sometimes give a toot if I see an unusual train or if I'm on a branch line where there's only one other train running back and forth. Back from the days at East Ham Depot when it was too wet to walk trackside to East Ham or Barking I'd jump in an ECS to Fenchurch Street then ride passenger back to Barking. I was always surprised at how drivers could see who was driving an approaching train (especially with the relatively small windows on the 302/305/308s). I can assure you that a friendly wave was the norm but sometimes ruder hand communications were exchanged if they saw a mate coming towards them.
I've suggested this before that it would be a cool feature to add random train spotters to platforms and bridges and have them wave as you pass , could even earn points for blowing horn
I'm really hoping a load of new passengers and passenger behaviours are one of the "yet to be announced" improvements in TSW6. The current passengers look like they're lost in the wrong part of a department store.
I read somewhere that at night drivers would flip their cab light on and off as a "wave", no idea if this still happens irl but I do it regardless.
