There aren't many diesel engines in Germany to test this. However, at the Cajon Pass, when you have seven locomotives on a train and the train ends up climbing, it loses several tons of weight. The gallon meter also decreases.

I normally set it to 90% filled. So you could run a 1000 kilometre dependent on the loco.
Don't really know yet if fuel consumption depends on weight at all, but it is on the RPM and Fuel Injector. So with a heavy train you will consume more fuel because of the higher engine load. I may can find out by reading the source code how it really works.

The attention to detail that goes into accurately building these locos never ceases to amaze me :D
When I'm really, REALLY bored on a lazy Sunday, I'll take the 218 up and down Mittenwaldbahn a couple of times and see if I can run her dry ;)

You definitely can. You need to drive about 857km at 85% throttle to get her dry. Have fun :D

Not strictly relevant to German locos but back on the dim and distant days when I covered the traction desks in the BR Control, the non twin tank Class 47’s had a fuel range of 450 miles. Twin tank 47’s were allowed 800 miles. However it was rare to run them that close to the limit as by that stage of their lives considerable sludge had accumulated in the fuel tanks possibly affecting the range.

Anyhow looking forward to getting back on the 294 later, one of the better items to emerge from the TSW6 story. Just a shame it doesn’t layer out the 363 on Maintalbahn.

There is a delay if the engine start is aborted or if the engine is stopped that prevents you from immediately restarting the engine. This takes approximately 10 seconds (and is indicated with driver assist if you have that enabled).

Regarding the service preparation state, I simulated this based on input from drivers of the locomotive where according to the rules if the locomotive is unoccupied the engine would be shut down (this happens automatically due to the START/STOPP feature which is simulated), parking brake applied, transmission shut off (button between the forward and reverse buttons, this is also what triggers the timed auto stop) and indirect brake cut out.

There is a bit of a learning curve to the locomotive, but once you get used to it it's not too bad :D
Mainly it's the traction lock and roll prevention that may trip up some players. The traction lock engages within 10 seconds of release, or 2.5 seconds of coming to a standstill. The roll prevention triggers 10 seconds after coming to a standstill (currently it triggers 10 seconds after releasing as well, though this is incorrect and I'll submit a fix to DTG shortly). The roll prevention can be identified by the locomotive brake applying 1.3 bar.

To release both of these safety features you simply press the "Traction Lock / Emergency Release" switch in either direction, with the power brake controller in the middle or lower position (same logic as most locos where you can't release traction lock with power applied). To forestall traction lock you can move the power brake controller to "Hold Power" or higher once the traction lock has been released and the delay increases to 45 seconds, which should be enough to start heavy trains.

To start on hills you can apply some train or locomotive brake and then hold the "Hill Start / Uncouple" switch in the Hill Start position while releasing the brake and the locomotive brake will stay applied until the Hill Start lever is released (this allows you to apply power with the locomotive brake still applied).

Regarding substitution, unfortunately this is controlled by each timetable rather than the locomotive so I can't do anything about that, but if you are able to make a bug ticket maybe DTG can fix that (worth a try at least :D ).

The engine fan has been fixed already (so it should be in the next patch) and I have fixed the missing animation for the brake cylinders/pistons.

Thanks cwf.green for all the details! :D

OK, didn't know that and have driver assist disabled. Good info though, I'll wait a couple of seconds before restarting in the future :)

It's a very well made loco and I settled in on it quickly! Driving it is a lot of fun, just as much as driving the 363, if not more. The traction lock adds a nice bit of complexity but I found it rather easy to build up a routine for it.
Stopping accurately with a heavy train in the back is still a challenge, but I'll get the hang of that ;)

Thinking about my earlier attempts at bug tickets, I won't hold my breath. But I'll try. Main-Spessart and Maintalbahn were the routes I was looking forward the most to use the 294 on...

Just ran a service with the 294 after today's update. Now faults appear approximately once a minute, mostly diesel engine shutdown and shutdown of the control stand. Both in that high occurrance make services nearly unplayable. If I had that faulty an engine, I'd call the signaller, write a ticket for the shop and take another one.

Also the fan control lever has the reduce position as it's standard position, so it will always return to that once operated, making it pointless to operate at all.

Sigh. Did they test the patch? Looks like one to avoid until/if they patch the patch…

Wouldn't know. Have yet to complete a service after the update, or even drive more than a few meters without some major fault forcing me to brake to a standstill.
I'm gonna try turning the faults off for my next attempt. First was with normal occurrance of fault, did a test with low occurrance of faults just now (no difference from normal setting btw.).

Confirmed. I'm also trying to do a test run, but the fault frequency has been upped to one fault at least every 30 seconds
This cannot have been tested properly... I turned faults off completely now as well.

Finished one run now. Despite not breaking track rules or speeding and having all safety systems turned on I couldn't score platinum, only gold.

Also during the run I heard constant air hissing noises that made me question whether I'm on a diesel engine or a late prussian shunting steamer despite not applying brakes, just maintaining speed either by idling or having a constant amount of power applied.

I also noticed those hissing noises, even before today's update. They only occur sporadically, but I haven't figured out yet what triggers them. As you mentioned, they don't seem to be related to any brake pressure level.

Hopefully this will get patched soon.

The journey mode chapter “Two Nine Four“ appears to have broken after yesterday’s update. The chapter now has multiple blank entries in the list and cannot be completed. Screenshot attached. I deleted and reinstalled the add-on, but the problem remains. My platform is PS5. Can this please be patched? Thank you!

PZB helper hud still does not work and can confirm the faults are every 20 seconds on xbox, hand brakes going off and engine stalling right after restarting. i dont even get the fault notifications on screen.

SIFA is still too quiet on PS5. I need advice on how to start the locomotive after turning off the engine with the Start/Stop system.

One more question. Why does my locomotive engine keep turning off even while driving? I managed to fully control the expert locomotive, but I don't understand the 294 locomotive at all. And it brakes for no reason. Another thing I noticed is the almost imperceptible PZB indicator at full brightness.

That's the cooling fan for the dynamic brake resistor bank. If you aren't using DB (or haven't just recently) it stays off.

I can't finish my journey with the BR 294.
The blank timetables don't load any trains. You just spawn somewhere on foot.
    Error occurred on Steam (PC)

Can confirm same on Steam/PC, the second portion of the Journey is still broken as per earlier reports.

Come on DTG, pull your socks up and get it sorted.

To be fair, once discovering you could use the loco brake keys to rest the interlock it just becomes second nature before moving off.

Biggest issue remains the broken Journey mode.

Still to be fixed (22 October):
    • Journey mode services blanked
    • Scoring does not acknowledge safety systems
    • No PZB help reminders
The latter two are probably related, as is the periodic "Turn on PZB" notification. Somehow the game doesn't realize that PZB is activated.

As CM’s could you please update the community aka customers what is happening to debug and fix the blanked Journey elements on the 294, please? It’s a fine loco, one of the highlights of the TSW6 content bundle but I would actually like to play through the Journey not just random timetable runs.

Morning Vern. Apologies, I've been off recently so just getting back into the swing of things. This is due to be fixed on the next patch update, but we'll be able to confirm when that goes live via the patch notes.
