Xbox Phone Number - British Transport Police

Has any noticed / heard that when travelling on the Transport Police livery and they give out the phone to call they say SIX ONE O ONE SIX, should that not be SIX ONE ZERO ONE SIX

 

I raised this point in one of the other threads. Even though it goes against the principles of the phonetic alphabet and numbers apparently this is how it’s recited IRL. Working on the real railway correct use of phonetics was drummed into as regards safety comms and it kind of rankles a bit.

 

It appears some companies pronounce it as Oh, some as Zero. Six one oh one six is more common though.

 

61 zero 16 on my SWR service this morning… first time I think I’ve been listening out for it!

Yes it does. This is supposed to be a simulation and safety critical voice comms are part of that.

Okay in this case it's a pre-recorded public announcement but if we ever get to the point of voice interaction between player and AI signaller then they need to get it right.

 

To lots of people, yes. Just because it doesn’t matter to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter to others. It’s part of the immersion. Besides, if the current version makes no difference to you, why would having the prototypical version cause you problems?

 

I got admit i turned the announcements off they started to get on my moobies.

 

Its not causing me problems. I merely asked if it mattered. When you look at the scope of issues the route has had, saying oh instead of zero is a minor issue.
Plus wouldnt your attention be on driving the train, rather than focusing on what the speech actually says?

 

If the real railways say "oh," then incorrect or not the sim is doing its job.

Remember, those announcements are recorded by actors, not trained police comms personnel.

 

More important still, they are recorded for passengers, most of whom probably refer to zero as oh in phone numbers.

(This is a bit like computer scientists getting annoyed with people for counting from 1 to 10 rather than 0 to 9.)

 

Whenever I ask for someone's phone number they generally start off by saying 07 not zero 7. As far as I'm aware no UK phone numbers have letters in them so there's no need for to pronounce zero.

If im correct the route it self reflect 2018/2019 and they say in the stream the number has changed but maybe i have understood that wrong.

 

I've only ever heard it pronounced oh rather than zero.

 

oh rather than zero also reduces the number of syllables used as well

I find I sometimes need to code shift when reading numbers over the phone to people with different accents, as some are more likely to hear "oh" as "four" while others hear "zero" as "three oh"

I don’t think I’ve ever read out a phone number and used zero in my life.

I recall even as a child oh live and kicking (a popular children’s Saturday morning tv show on the uk) the the number was always oh one eight one eight one eight one eight one

 

Ha, I'm old enough to remember when it changed from 081 to 0181, and they re-recorded the jingle for it. And indeed Multi-Coloured Swap Shop before that, with 01 811 8055. All 'oh' rather than 'zero'!

 

Then there was bacon sarnie loving Ed Milliband who only created 'Net Zero' because his original project left him at risk of getting sued by these guys.

Well, I'm sitting on a West Midlands train and the recorded lady announcer has just said 'oh', not 'zero'!

 

My old work number started with an 'oh' and ended with a 'zero', at least it did the way I said it.

 

I wonder what Double Zero 7 would have to say about all this?

 

And of course, there's a certain spy whose code number definitely isn't 'double-zero-seven'.

If you're speaking on a radio, then yes.
If the goal is for the general public to easily remember which numbers they need to reach the police in an emergency, it's whatever achieves that.

 

Was on (real life) Manchester Piccadilly earlier this evening and it was most definitely “oh” used and not “zero”.

 

In my experience (Antipodean English), along with informal/formal usage 'oh' is usually a number whereas 'zero' is a quantity ('none' would be used for a discrete quantity, 'zero' for a indiscrete). I do sometimes use 'zero' for the number though when trying to be specific and clear, like reading out a credit card number over the phone.

 

6-101-6 is constantly battling other important phone numbers in my head, like 0(1)81 811 8181 and 0118 999 881 999 119 725 3.

As stated earlier, there are varying conventions for public use but in the UK railway industry for operational safety critical comms it is inviolately “zero” .

 

DadRail's sound clip uses zero.

 

Not sure where OP is from but "oh" is the standard way to say "0" as part of a phone number in British English, just find any British radio / TV / online advert or show with a phone number and you'll hear "oh" (as per the IT Crowd example above: "oh one one eight")

"Zero" is used for mathematical values or operational communications, I don't think I've ever heard anyone in the UK say "zero" in a phone number unless they're from another country.

If "Oh" rather than Zero is the difference between life and death, then it's a price worth paying.
While I rail against Americanisms creeping into our English language, this seems to be a typically British thing anyway.

I used to live in London when it had an "01" area code and I grew up saying "Oh wun", never even considered it was technically wrong until I was in my twenties. I don't think I've ever heard someone say "Zero" at the start of a UK phone number.

 

This back-and-forth is all well and good, but what does the real recording on this route say?

 

Last all calling Hastings Direct. Zero Eight Hundred, Double Zero, Ten Sixty Six. No, it's definitely oh.

It's a menial difference. Either way, it's not game breaking.

 

From what I'm reading it's "oh" IRL. It certainly is on Greater Anglia trains.
