Every time a light went red, I got the "off path" message, which shifted to "proceed as signals indicate" until right after overtaking the preceding train at Secaucus Junction, at which point I got a permanent red just beyond it again with the "off path" message. Not sure what other path I could possibly have followed since I was following the green line to my objective and there's no point at which I came off the right hand side track.
