Pwllheli to Machynlleth is a route on the east coast of Wales, UK that goes through the Snowdonia National Park via Porthmadog and Barmouth.
The journey is roughly between 2 and 1/4 hours and 2 and 1/2 hours. The route is around 31 miles (50km).
The Train Operator for the route is Arriva Trains Wales using primarily 2 car sets of the Class 158: upload_2019-12-8_12-18-4.jpeg

This would be a fantastic route. If set in the 1970s, the 101 would be suitable with a respray into all over blue, and there was still some freight traffic, usually hauled by class 24\25 locomotives. I love driving the 101 and this would make a nice change from the Trans Pennine and Tees Valley.

There was the Cambrian Coast Express daily as well. It split at Machynlleth, half went to Aberystwyth, the other half to Pwllheli. In the 80s, I think it was class 37 hauled. I remember once in 1989 the whole train was formed with Network South East coaches!

An interesting and picturesque coastal route that passes close by or over 4 narrow gauge preserved railways, which would add even more interest.
Machynlleth has a recently built light maintenance depot for the 158s - it'd give a bit of something extra to do.

It also has the in-cab ERTMS signalling system, which would be something different to learn. Unfortunately that means only trains equipped with ERTMS can use the line (and to Aberystwyth) so that limits it to the 158s and the few yellow class 97s (converted class 37s).

Set prior to the signaling changes the route saw various classes of loco (even the HST on excursion!) and often saw steam hauled specials during the summer months.

By the way it's not Arriva Trains anymore it's been taken over by Transport for Wales.
    Quite a smart livery.
