New Jt Route Cumbrian Coast: Carlisle - Whitehaven From Just Trains

TSW is full of compromises so it wouldnt be the most unworkable reskin. TSC and TSW have both suffered from a serious lack of 1st gen units especially those found in north west england other than the 101. Scotland had a right mix in the mid to late 80s partly down to a depot fire.

 

I was looking on the Railcar UK site earlier and although the 107's and 108's were both Derby built DMU's there were significant differences - 107's had heavier (all steel) bodies and bogies plus slightly different window style and a headcode box. Though interestingly it looks like the mechanical equipment was similar so presumably they were slightly less quick off the mark than a 108.

 

North Clyde to Helensburgh Central, so we could get West Highland southern option in the future! 1982/84, perfect timeframe Imo! Back on topic now, guys!

I get why you said "Pressed Steel " body. It is however, actually the standard Derby design.

 

You're quite right I'm getting my DMUs mixed up, I stand corrected!
In any case, that style of body was very common.

 

Most classes had this style.

 

No more Scottish DMUs please unless, of course, it is one of these ugly buggers
(Plus the route that they ran on.................That really would be a breath of fresh Ayr ).

The 126s were really bizarre asymmetrical things, but I suppose an interesting solution to the gangway cab problem as discussed on another thread. Later on the gangways were removed, resulting in the worst of both Worlds for the 'inner' cab!

 

Nice one! Never travelled on or I think even saw one of these in service, sadly. Didn’t they have a Class 120 Cross Country style cab at the non gangwayed end?

They were regulars in the "Scottish bay" at Carlisle back in the late 70s-early 80s. Bizarre units altogether. If JT carry on with their expansion from the hubs of Carlisle and Preston we may even see one in the game one day , though I doubt there'd be much call for the route itself?

 

Well I would love to see the GSW or part of it and our best chance of getting a 26 or 27 in the game.

 

Another day one from me, quite an interesting route if done in the right period. Although its seriously long so maybe only to Dumfries but throw the Maxwelltown branch in and the Freight stubs around the North of Carlisle such as Longtown and Eastriggs.

Now they have announced to Whitehaven I have a bit more confidence they would tackle stuff like this. A 26 or 27 indeed and Some Air braked Speedlink vans which TSW has none of yet.

 

I was thinking more Kilmarnock which gives the scenic section but avoids the complexity of running into Glasgow.

 

The old G&SW is fascinating; the P&WJR too. Keith Ross's Port Road route for TSC was excellent, and it prompted me to finally go up and explore that part of the country last Summer.

 

I think maybe Kilmarnock too far although yes decent line. Lots of long AB sections.....

 

I really hope on Content Creators club we can attach a 101 carriage to the 108 and make a hybrid set.

 

This is the one I've been waiting for!!! Im from Carlisle, my aunt lives in Wigton and family friends in Whitehaven. We were up and down this line during the 80s on the 108s. It would be nice if you could run a few steam trains also. But im not expecting the option.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a steam railtour.

 

Blackpool branches has an 8F tour I think, so I expect there's something similar as a layer.

 

Even if there isn't a steam railtour in the timetable, there's nothing stopping anyone from spawning on in and driving it

 

Just wondering if at the time there might have been restrictions operating Mark One stock over the route, due to lack of window bars across the door drop lights? Not though that could prevent a bit of artistic licence of course.

 

I wondered that but I am sure back in the late 80's when I started buying railway magazines, I saw pictures of steam railtours over the Cumbrian coast. I could be mis-remembering as its a long time ago.

Edit: Just had a quick google, it seems there was a Cumbrian coast express in 1982 but that was between Carnforth and Maryport, so presumably not the northern section. As you say some modellers licence can be enacted (I am sure some class 40's will feature anyway ).

Workington without 40s is unthinkable

 

I remember Flying Scotsman (in it’s 4472 guise) coming through Workington around 1980.

 

Back then didn't they have a more sensible attitude to H&S rather than trying to protect every moron from themselves?

 

Mk1s were the staple for the Mystery Tours and Daytrippers … they’d be parked up in one of the centre roads at Workington for weeks either side of the trip. Had some great ones - York, Llandudno, Nottingham, all sorts … always a rake of steam heated Mk1s (usually corridor-only stock, no first class, no buffet) hauled by a KD 40.
