I mean relative to other sounds in the sim. Their wagon sound packs seem too quiet relative to loco sounds and other producers wagon sounds. Do other players notice this? Is there a fix or a mod that can be applied please?
I use all WJ Sound wagon sounds here. They are the most realistic available however there is probably somewhere in the Ap sound proxybin (I don't have this item) where you can turn the volume up and down.
I'm always curious when people say sounds aren't loud enough. Are you saying that if you turn up your speakers to a level where you are happy with the volume of the wagons, that other sounds such as the loco itself are too loud? If so, are you positive the wagons should be louder than the loco?
I think that is what he is saying, and I agree. I find most AP sounds a little on the quiet side and a little "clinical". It isn't only wagons, I find the Class 40 sound set so. Those poor old engines used to bang and clatter their way around but the sound set makes it sound as if they are thickly carpeted and double-glazed. Still, they are better than anything else so I am content to live with that. To anwer the original question, it will be necessary to delve into the sound control file (probably *.proxybin) and fiddle with the figures. It is beyond my ken to alter things satisfactorily - I've tried! John
I have also found AP sounds to be very quiet, until I bought new headphones. So I guess the AP devs has better hardware than most of us
Yes. If you turn up the volume so AP wagon sounds are at a credible level, then most of other sounds are near deafening. Having stood next to freight trains going through Stafford station I am certain that wagon run sounds can be as loud, if not louder, than the loco's. Other DLC content creators like 3DZug and Virtual Railroads generally do much better with respect to wagon sounds.
If one turns ones headphones / speakers up loud, the AWS is then deafening. Also, passing under bridges and going through tunnels on old routes e.g. Shap, the reverb sound is deafening when you turn the headphone / speaker volume up.
I have just looked in an AP wagon proxyxml file and when you look at the Base Volume it is lower than the base volume in VR wagons This is AP This is VR The Base Volume on the AP Wagon is 0.48 compared with 1 on the VR
That's very interesting. Where do I find the relevant proxyxml file please? I've recently installed TS Tools, so I hope I can now edit them.
Proxyxml files are not encoded - just open them in a text editor. When you encounter BIN files, it is far easier to convert them using serz64.exe for editing with a text editor. The files are easily found . . . these ones are located at: \Steam\SteamApps\common\railworks\Assets\AP\WagonSP\Audio\RailVehicles\Freight\New etc. John
The location varies in AP wagons some use the WagonSp and other have their own - Like the JXA Railworks\Assets\AP\JXAWagonPack01\Audio\RailVehicles The bin file for each wagon with tell you which sound they use.
Thanks to you and others for your help. I've now found the relevant file and looked at it in TS Tools. Another question though. If I edit the proxyxml file, do I have to compile it to binary afterwards, or does TSC or TS Tools take care of this automatically?
According to this page you just save the file as the game does not use the proxybin. https://railworks.fandom.com/wiki/Files_and_formats I normally use Notepad++ to edit xml files - seems easier than TSTools these days
I'm not sure how it can be any easier than using TSTools. You open the file do your edit, tell it to save and you're done.
Really - Have you used Notepad ++? You only change what is in Black and when finished use the Save Icon
I find it quicker to not use a sledgehammer to crack a nut. :} I keep a shortcut on the Desktop to serz64.exe, you just drop a BIN file on it and it creates a corresponding XML in the same place. Drop the XML onto the shortcut to re-compile.Simples! John
