If Dovetail had in mind about railway in Southeast Asia especially in Malaysia, there's one to be looking at. Introducing Malaysia West Coast Railway Line, operated by KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad) or Malayan Railways Limited. This 110 kilometre train line connects capital city of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur to the northeast of Malaysia Peninsular in Ipoh, Perak. Image of West Coast Railway Line. Just half of it but i think that would be reasonable to drive that far. As you can see on the map line it starts in KL Sentral Station (Kuala Lumpur Central Station) which is the main station that connects every train line in the city. I would suggest this train will go as far as Ipoh Station. It is like take a Class 395 Javelin Throw from Ashford International Station to St Pancras International but little bit far like another 10KM to reach Ipoh Station. Talking about history, this West Coast Railway line was developed in stretches on June 1, 1885, with the opening of the Taiping-Port Weld Line, and 1932 when the line opened up to Tanjung Pagar in Singapore, thus spanning the entire west coast of Peninsular Malaysia from Padang Besar on the Malaysia-Thailand border to Singapore. The line began with the construction of branches linking coastal ports with inland tin mining areas before they were gradually linked up by the main truck line running through the interior of the West Coast states of Peninsular in Malaysia. The locomotive that suited for this line is KTM Class 93. It's electric and capable being able to accelerate from 0 to 160 km/h (99 mph) in two minutes. It's diesel electric, built to a gauge of 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) and powered by a 16-cylinder engine of 3,300 horsepower (2,500 kW) instead of the 12-cylinder engine. It will have to be a 3rd party that does the project. But first, a license needs to be obtained and then go from there
I want to bump this thread back up! Having frequently commuted myself between KL Sentral and Subang Jaya when I lived there I think this is the perfect country + route to start a South-East Asian expansion in. I know licensing would need to start but getting a SEA market started for DTG may be worth it (I hope) Modern day KTM Komuter would be perfect for this! And some of the older loco's are pretty cool. They used to run Diesel loco's on these lines as well. KTM Class 83:
It would be a very niche market though and probably not that commercially viable for either DTG or a 3P to undertake.
